Empty sac/sacs

Hi ladies, I'm new here and just looking for some advice.
I'm 27 years old with a 4 year old son and 2 year old son. I'm currently between 5-6 weeks pregnant (difficult to tell due to irregular cycles)
I paid for a private scan yesterday to rule out ectopic due to cramping on one side.

During the scan the sonographer found an empty sac, then another potential empty sac (but mentioned that this could be a bleed)

I'm just after some advice really. Has anyone ever seen an empty sac/sacs and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy?

My LMP was 05/12/19 so according to online due date calculators I'm around 5+3.

Thank you!

Hi
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. You might want to ask mnhq to move this to parenting or pregnancy as you may get more support there x

Leaannb · 18/01/2020 19:53

I’m sorry but no without a yolk sac which forms inside the gestational sac then the pregnancy is not viable. It’s called a chemical pregnancy and you will start miscarrying

slipperywhensparticus · 18/01/2020 19:54

I would see a gp

MJB1ESS · 18/01/2020 19:55

How do I do that? Sorry I'm completely new to mumsnet! Xx

I've read on here before about empty sacs but it was simply because it was too early to really see anything, and a later scan showed a pregnancy.

However, I know some mean a failed pregnancy especially further down the line.

Since you're so early, I think you just need to hang on a week or so and go again.

What a stressful time for you!

I was suppose to have my booking appointment yesterday but the receptionist accidentally booked me in for the nurse instead of the midwife. Now I have to wait another week to see the midwife xx

Depends on your dates, equipment used etc. I know someone who went for a scan at 6w, saw an empty sac and was told to expect the worst. 2 weeks later there was a visible foetal pole and she was 100% sure on dates

MummyFriend · 18/01/2020 19:59

You wouldn't see anything in the sac yet, it's too early. I've had scans later than this with my latest two pregnancies to rule out ectopics - both times the sacs looked empty but both turned into healthy pregnancies. I really wouldn't worry at this stage!

MJB1ESS · 18/01/2020 20:01

It was a transabdominal scan so not the best type for this early on but as they were a private scanning place they didn't do the vaginal scan xx

5 weeks is very very early and you can’t always see anything within a sac then, especially not on an external ultrasound.

I actually had an US (for another reason) at 5 weeks and although the sonographer could see a sac, she couldn’t see much else which she said was entirely normal. That sac is now 3. It’s best to book a private viability scan for around 8 weeks.

Good luck.

MJB1ESS · 18/01/2020 20:04

I have a free rescan next Friday. The sonographer didn't seemed concerned, just that I might have ovulated later or my dates may be a bit off. It's only been a day since and it's so nerve wracking. Worse case scenario no embryo grows, best case 2 embryos grow in their sacs. My emotions are all over the place! xx

I’m sorry you are having to deal with this OP. I had a bleed at around 8 weeks and had an early scan which revealed two sacs, one empty which she described as a ‘vanishing twin’. The other sac is now 10 and sat opposite me with his headset on playing Fortnite. Fingers crossed for you.

RyvitaBrevis · 18/01/2020 20:30

It's too soon to see, especially abdominally instead of transvaginally. My fertility clinic will normally only do a first (transvaginal) scan to rule out an ectopic at 7 weeks. Hang in there. xx

Liland · 18/01/2020 20:35

I've no experience in empty sacs, but thought you're meant to go for private scans at 8 weeks to confirm heartbeat? Before that everything is so small that minor days out make huge differences in the results and can cause unnecessary worry.

lauryloo · 18/01/2020 20:40

I had this when I was having pains. Just a sac, no pole could be seen.

Went back a week later and pregnancy had progressed. They thought my dates were out but now are spot on, so it's likely too early.

Now 23 weeks

Bibijayne · 18/01/2020 20:47

The very early private scans are not that accurate. I was told the same when I estimated I was 6 weeks.

I was gutted.

The 'empty sac' is now 17 months old and snuggling his cuddly dinosaur toy upstairs.

willothewispa · 18/01/2020 20:59

It can't always been seen. Mine is now 16.

willothewispa · 18/01/2020 21:00

Forgot to say this was on an internal scan at seven weeks

Babynut1 · 19/01/2020 03:54

If you’re 5&3 then it’s too early.
I have had an empty sac which didn’t progress. I was over 6 weeks at the time. Had blood work done too, bloods weee slowly increasing but not doubling as they should.
I had a follow up scan a week later which still showed an empty sac and more bloods done and the hcg levels started to reduce so knew then I was miscarrying. And my body finally expelled the sac two weeks later. this was my third miscarriage.

On DS I had a scan at 6 weeks due to light spotting and there was a little heartbeat. But this was a vaginal scan in the early pregnancy unit.

On DD I had a private abdominal scan at 7 weeks and you could just see the fetal pole and a very tiny heartbeat. So it was very early.

In a weeks time you should be able to see more xxx

Darkstar4855 · 19/01/2020 04:20

Agree with PP, on an abdominal scan at 5+3 it would not be unusual to see an empty sac. Did they tell you the size of the sac?

Fingers crossed you will see some progress on your next scan.

grudieabbey · 19/01/2020 04:24

5 weeks - sac and that’s it. 10 weeks - heartbeat and moving little baby jiggling away. Both private travavaginal. It’s too early for you. Hang in there.

MJB1ESS · 19/01/2020 12:28

Thank you ladies. This gives me a bit of hope! I'll be sure to update after my scan on Friday xx

I had an early scan due to bleeding at 6w+3. They couldn’t see anything (TV scan) and said I must have had my dates wrong and be less than 5 weeks. I had to go back 2 weeks later for a rescan and there was an 8w+3 baby!

maddening · 19/01/2020 13:12

It is a wait and see I'm afraid, it is quite early at this point to guess either way, good luck op x
