To think vertical blinds are utterly insane?

Every house I've ever moved in to has had them.

Why?

They look like a 90's dentists waiting room.

Make your sitting room feel like an office.

Collect dust like anything,

Hideous strangulation hazard for children and animals.

Fall to bits if you put anything on the window.

Fall to bits if you brush past them...

Don't think they're cheap either!

Just why?

I’m hideously overlooked, I don’t love my vertical blinds, but I have to admit they’re very practical. They’re also handy to keep out low sun (an issue with our west facing living room).

BillHadersNewWife · 17/01/2020 22:50

I love nets and hate vertical blinds. Blinds are COLD and ugly. Nets...plus beautiful velvet curtains...or if you're like me just the curtains. I don't care if people look in my windows! I'm not doing anything illegal. And I don't think a peeping Tom would get turned on by the sight of me swigging tea and patting the dog.

Bluntness100 · 17/01/2020 22:51

Sorry I also meant vertical!

Dafspunk · 17/01/2020 22:51

Nets aren’t just dated - they’re prehistoric.

MimiLaRue · 17/01/2020 22:51

I imagine people who have nets also have one of those dolls with the huge skirt on to cover up the toilet roll Grin

Rastamousehat · 17/01/2020 22:56

Shutters can be partially open, they're not solid like a door, they have louvres than can let in some light/allow privacy.

What about Austrian blinds ? Do we think they'll make comeback? 😳😂😂

Pingue · 17/01/2020 22:56

Hideous, naff and outdated. My house had them and I threw them all out. I didn’t want passers by to think I was the type of person who had vertical blinds.

BillHadersNewWife · 17/01/2020 22:56

MImi well that's where you're wrong. I have nine of them.

Actually I don't have any of them. I think you're being a bit narrow minded. I like a more Bohemian style...vintage. Nets when bad quality are ugly. But real lace ones, teamed with antiques, look right.

No more narrow minded than people saying blinds are hideous and office like and gross.
Surely this entire thread is simply personal opinion and thats mine- I think nets are awful, sorry.

Binterested · 17/01/2020 22:59

Horrible. They belong in those accountants’ offices that are based in a shop on a high st. With a dying pot plant in the window. Always.

TheCraicDealer · 17/01/2020 23:02

Hate vertical blinds, although tbf they're still better than venetians [shudder] Those things are dust traps. My first boyfriend's fireman dad had a side gig cleaning them; must have made a fortune.

We have a big window at the front of our house (2m x 1.9m) and as we were one of the first houses completed on our estate people used to drive v slowly past and peer in. We eventually went with a roller blind made of voile material which was perfect- let in light but gave us much needed privacy. We recently added a roman over the top and the layering works really well.

AmelieTaylor · 17/01/2020 23:04

I put nets up. They're timeless

🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣

You have NO business dissing other people’s window coverings!! None.

Jesz · 17/01/2020 23:06

Verticle is the norm in my city, I can't remember last time I saw horizontal ones?

PonteLaCorona · 17/01/2020 23:07

Where do you all live that you haven't seen nets for decades? Everyone in my road has nets (except my neighbours who have got vertical blinds - reminds me of a dentist surgery) You can get quite nice modern ones these days. They don't have to be the manky heavy lace kind.

ferrier · 17/01/2020 23:15

wonders whatever happened to the lovely Alistair Appleton CHRIST I JUST LOOKED IT UP THAT PROGRAMME IS OVER 20 YEARS OLD ARGH

He presents Escape to the Country still I think.

Was going to agree until you said you had nets Hmm

NeckPainChairSearch · 17/01/2020 23:22

YANBU
YANBU
YANBU

and then: you hit us with: I put nets up. They're timeless

Now I don't know what to say to you, OP. Talk about mixed messages.

BitOfFun · 17/01/2020 23:22

I've got proper lace nets in my front room- I think they work because it's a Victorian house, and they are only from the sash downwards. I understand why many people find them hideous, but they're sometimes the best option. My house is only three or four feet from the pavement, so the privacy element is essential.

Shutters can be beautiful, although I find that they often block too much light. They are becoming ubiquitous where I live, but just don't want to spend that much money, or faff about adjusting the angles of the blades as the sun moves.

Justgorgeous · 17/01/2020 23:24

Shutters are the best. Nets are just hideous.

DracarysThis · 17/01/2020 23:26

Nets are grim and vertical blinds are shiteous abominations.

doobiev · 17/01/2020 23:32

How does that work in daylight hours?

They are fantastic during the day, that's the main reason we have them as some of our rooms get a lot of sun & I hated having to shut the curtains to watch the tv etc. I have big sash windows & went for the two tier option like in the photo. Plus i could also have privacy & light at the same time.

Yoohoo16 · 17/01/2020 23:38

Just moved into a property with these. I must admit, I’ve moaned they are too ‘officey’ to keep. But I’m loving the privacy and sunlight control they offer. Not sure what to replace them with when it comes to it.

ConsolidateTheBiscuits · 17/01/2020 23:55

They are practical but boy are they ugly. We inherited loads of them when we moved into a big barn conversion. A beautiful old barn with second hand car dealer blinds! We lived there 7 years and never replaced them. The dog used to trash the floor length ones.
