Laurence Fox on Question Time

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:00

It isn't ok to try and shut anyone up with remarks about their skin colour. It doesn't matter if that skin colour is white, black or green with purple spots.

His fellow actors have been told to "denounce" him. It looks like he can wave goodbye to his career. What lovely tolerant people the ultra woke are.

From Wiki

"One of these was his first break into film – the 2001 horror-thriller The Hole. Fox feels that in landing the role his name "probably helped – it's a combination of timing, luck and contacts". Nonetheless, "the name opens some doors, but then you have to show you can do the job"

I wonder if being related to James Fox and Edward Fox helped?

malylis · 19/01/2020 20:27

An utter privileged knob, who wouldn't have made it with out the economic privileges he had.

Biscoffer · 19/01/2020 20:28

Quoted from the article posted above. Is Mr Fox the new Katie Hopkins?

"I've got nine nephews and nieces and none of them are white. So, it's not like we're dealing with a world where the white man is going to be around for that many more generations."

Lizzie0869 · 19/01/2020 20:28

I didn't know that, but it doesn't surprise me thinking about it. He sounds similar to them.

Lizzie0869 · 19/01/2020 20:29

That was in response to chomalungma's post.

EntropyRising · 19/01/2020 20:35

Do you think there is no racism in this country?

This is a ridiculously stupid question.

TheRealMcKenna · 19/01/2020 20:36

@iwunderwhy he is a gobshite. He has jumped on the ‘it’s cool to be anti-woke and into free speech’ bandwagon but with far less talent than some and far fewer convictions than others.

Like all gobshites, he has some opinions I agree with and others I don’t.

If I only took notice of people I agreed with all the time then I’d be shut in a box and completely on my own all the time. I never agree with ANYONE on everything.

I am married to the most ‘woke’ person in the world. Listening to the counter arguments, and hearing their (often legitimate) views is very important to maintaining some degree of sanity.

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:37

I wonder if Piers Morgan will have him on his show challenging him on his views and asking him about the privilege he has had growing up?

I doubt it.

I also doubt he would go up against Naga Munchetty - who got reprimanded by the BBC when she dared express an opinion on racism when a white male someone said that telling someone to go back home was not racist.

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:38

This is a ridiculously stupid question

That's what Lawrence was implying with his response on QT.

JamesBlonde1 · 19/01/2020 20:41

There is racism in every country.

Black against white, white against black, Asian (various) against black, etc etc.

Depends which country you are in and what the majority is.

Why is this news?!

Seems Japan and North Korea don't have as much of an issue as they are strict on who they let in (to remain).

WeWantSweet · 19/01/2020 20:48

I think at heart it boils down to Majorityism vs Minoritism as that equates to human nature.

TheRealMcKenna · 19/01/2020 20:49

Meanwhile, Japan steps on its own land mine...

It really pains me to hear of free speech described as a bandwagon.

iwunderwhy · 19/01/2020 20:50

@chomalungma I agree.
Some people deal with the guilt of extraordinary unearned access and wealth by trying to redress the balance, or helping people, others like LF go on the attack.

He wants a world where just 50 years ago working class and black actors couldn't get a role because posh nobs like him played everything. ....And women SHUT the hell UP.

He might only be 41 years old but his attitude is hundreds of years old.

Oakenbeach · 19/01/2020 20:52

I don't think that people have said that all abuse of her is down to racism.

Many have absolutely said that racism is at the heart of the criticism of MM. Here’s a good example: www.nytimes.com/2020/01/09/opinion/sunday/meghan-markle-prince-harry.html

Moreover, I don’t think many people at all would disagree with the fact that MM has received racist abuse online.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 19/01/2020 20:54

I have absolutely no problem with Lawrence Fox. Obviously many of you think that he is not allowed an opinion as he is a white, middle class male.

TheRealMcKenna · 19/01/2020 20:55

It really pains me to hear of free speech described as a bandwagon.

True. But hasn’t ‘free speech’ been in crisis for some time?

KeepCookingWithGas · 19/01/2020 20:58

Free speech shouldn't be thought I'd as a bandwagon, no.

The BBC should stop having actors and comedians on Question Time. It would slim down the panel too.

malylis · 19/01/2020 21:05

No one said he is not allowed an opinion.

Again that's just a strawman attempt to stop any debate.

The "free speech crisis " is very much a manufactured thing of the right.

derxa · 19/01/2020 21:07

The girls were not targeted because of their race, girls from the Pakistani community were abused in the same way and at the same rate. You're utterly horrible.

Oakenbeach · 19/01/2020 21:10

The girls were not targeted because of their race, girls from the Pakistani community were abused in the same way and at the same rate.

It seems only white people are capable of discriminating on the basis of race Confused

TheRealMcKenna · 19/01/2020 21:11

The "free speech crisis " is very much a manufactured thing of the right.

Go and say that on Feminism Chat....

Sagradafamiliar · 19/01/2020 21:15

I've only ever heard '....it's free speech!' tacked on the end of a really offensive sentence. A bit like when racists say 'I'm not racist, but...'

It's freedom of expression in the UK anyway, not 'free speech'. It doesn't include hate speech.

BananaTaffy · 19/01/2020 21:15

I've only just heard about this, thanks for whoever posted the full exchange. He isn't being 'shut down'; someone is just trying to point out to him that he isn't exactly well placed to be the ultimare arbiter of whether MM experienced racism or not. Too self-important to grasp the point, he cried racism against him.

He made himself look very ignorant.

malylis · 19/01/2020 21:17

I'll say it wherever i like thanks.

In terms or the majority of free speech out cries it is manufactured by the right.

@derxa I'm really not horrible for saying that it wasn't a race thing, and by the evidence it wasn't. It was however a misogynist thing.
