Laurence Fox on Question Time

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:00

It isn't ok to try and shut anyone up with remarks about their skin colour. It doesn't matter if that skin colour is white, black or green with purple spots.

His fellow actors have been told to "denounce" him. It looks like he can wave goodbye to his career. What lovely tolerant people the ultra woke are.

And for many reasons neither would I date an under-35, including that I'm too old and married, but also because they tend to be too woke (although I wouldn't put it quite like that).

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 19:58

The article:

"He also said he no longer dates women under 35 as they are 'too woke' and most of them are 'absolutely bonker"
"He added: 'Not all men are racists. I've got a lot of male friends and none of them have been jailed for rape or been accused of sexual harassment"

He also has an issue with the 'controversial' advert that dared show men in non traditional roles and talked about the 'Me Too' movement.

Sounds a charmer.

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2020 19:58

Do you have the arrogance to believe that otherwise they would be queuing up for you though??

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:01

I'm sure you haven't misquoted him on purpose, but there is no mention of opinionated in the articles that I have been able to find on Google

He doesn't want women who are too woke.

Given the experiences that women such as Megan and other women face when they express an opinion that people like him disagree with, I suspect he just would like a woman who keeps her opinions to herself.

Flaxmeadow · 19/01/2020 20:01

I think he just thinks that Meghan and other women just need to shut up and keep their opinions to themselves

But shutting up is part of the deal, man or woman, in return for being a member of the royal family soap opera. In return you smile sweetly, shake hands and promote charitable causes. It's Noblisse Oblige and all that old fuedal stuff. Handing out the scraps from the big table to the lower orders, but keeping your opinions to yourself. It can't be that hard to understand and play the role, especially for an actress. To be fair to Meghan, she seemed good at it, until now.
There is more to this I think

TheRealMcKenna · 19/01/2020 20:02

I heard him in an interview saying that he gets pissed off with the hypocrisy of people he knows who drive up to London in their AMG Mercedes in order to take part in Extinction Rebellion.

That’s an opinion that I have absolutely no problem with.

EntropyRising · 19/01/2020 20:04

Do you have the arrogance to believe that otherwise they would be queuing up for you though??

Well, probably.

Wink

I'm not sure this is the implication. It would be pretty normal for a 41 year old single guy who is presumably rich (?) to date a woman a few years younger. I've been sufficiently primed by the patriarchy to know that the inverse is not true for women.

Mind you, he does not strike me as charming or a prize catch. I just happen to agree with him that Markle's treatment is in the main not a product of racism.

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:05

The full exchange:

Rachel Boyle: 'The problem we've got with this is that Meghan has agreed to be Harry's wife and then the Press have torn her to pieces. Let's be really clear about what this is – let's call it by its name, it's racism, she's a black woman and she has been torn to pieces.'

Laurence Fox: 'It's not racism, you can't just...'

RB: 'She has been torn to pieces.'

LF: 'It's not racism.'

RB: 'It absolutely is.'

LF: 'No it's not, we're the most tolerant, lovely country in Europe.'

RB: 'Says a white privileged man.'

LF: 'It's not racism.

RB: 'Says a white privileged man.'

LF: 'Oh God. It's so easy to throw the charge of racism at everybody and it's really starting to get boring.

RB: 'What worries me about your comment is you are a white privileged male who has no experience in this.

LF: 'I can't help what I am, I was born like this, it's an immutable characteristic, so to call me a white privileged male is to be racist - you're being racist.'

This is a white privileged male saying that the UK is the most tolerant, lovely country in Europe and there is no racism.

And then says that it's boring when people bring up the 'race card' and gets angry when someone says they have no experience of that.

If he had said that about women and sexism, I wonder how many people would be defending that?

EntropyRising · 19/01/2020 20:05

Given the experiences that women such as Megan and other women face when they express an opinion that people like him disagree with, I suspect he just would like a woman who keeps her opinions to herself.

So that is your characterisation, then. Good that we clarified that.

malylis · 19/01/2020 20:06

I bet you find so many people driving to London in an AMG to take part in extinction rebellion.

As always though, its a tu quoque fallacy even if it happens, so a fundamentally flawed argument.

Patroclus · 19/01/2020 20:06

According to an amnesty internation study over a long period (not a day FFS)

*Diane Abbott received almost half (45.14 per cent) of all abusive tweets in the run up to the Election
Excluding Diane Abbott, black and Asian women MPs in Westminster received 35 per cent more abusive tweets than white women MPs*

A sample of a couple of those tweets

''you forgot fat obese chicken loving nigger'
and
''an acid attack ould probably make your face look better you fat nigger''
''Tasina needs to be poked with a massive dildo''

Dianne ABoot-“My office got flooded with communications, both by letter and by email. People sent us emails and letters full of swastikas, people sent us postcards and letters with pictures of monkeys and chimps. People sent us hundreds of emails using the word nigg*r — that’s the sort of response we get. It’s highly racialised and it’s also gendered because people talk about rape and they talk about my physical appearance in a way they wouldn’t talk about a man. I’m abused as a female politician and I’m abused as a black politician.”

And would you believe it, its by far left wing politicians receiving most of the abuse.

Have fun defending that, lowlifes.

Oakenbeach · 19/01/2020 20:08

However many people disagree that the treatment of MM was free of racial issues. The language used and the type of negative stories she attracted (many where KM was reported positively for the same thing) really did show this.*

Really? All I see is spurious extrapolation and very poor logic which appears to go as follows:

  1. People of colour are sometimes criticised for being, say, pushy.
  2. MM was criticised for being pushy and is of colour
  3. Therefore criticism of MM for being pushy because she is a women of colour
  4. Therefore criticism of MM is racist

It’s a though people are desperately trying to identify and magnify racism in our society, by assuming that everything that might be down to racism, is necessarily down to racism.

I believe this a battle of attrition being fought by the woke liberal left as part of a culture war designed to browbeat society into delegitimising any expressions of pride or affinity with more traditional sense of British, or more particularly English, identity felt by those outside London and our other metropolitan melting pots. It is losing this battle, as shown by the Tory win last month, and if it continues in this vein risks losing the war and many of be hard fought victories for racial and religious tolerance won over the past half century, which would be a tragedy.

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:09

I'm confused - how can Diane Abbot be receiving such racist abuse when Laurence said the UK is a peaceful, lovely country when it comes to racism?

EntropyRising · 19/01/2020 20:09

This is a white privileged male saying that the UK is the most tolerant, lovely country in Europe and there is no racism.

The UK is amongst the most tolerant countries in Europe, if not the most.

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:13

It’s a though people are desperately trying to identify and magnify racism in our society, by assuming that everything that might be down to racism, is necessarily down to racism

I don't think that people have said that all abuse of her is down to racism.

But I suspect that her race has helped fuel the abuse from some quarters.

Just like with Diane Abbot. She gets a lot of abuse for being a women in politics. And then she gets abuse for being a black politician as well. So the abuse isn't just down to racism.

And that kind of thing needs to be discussed and not just dismissed.

Oakenbeach · 19/01/2020 20:14

@Patroclus

Diane Abbott has doubtless been subjected to vile racist abuse. I don’t that can be denied.

However, the issue is that the many who dislike and criticise her for all manner of reasons are being conflated with those racists, and lumped in with them.

People are understandably angry about this and rightly want to be able to criticise Diane Abbott without being accused of being racist. If that makes me a “lowlife” then so be it!

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:15

The UK is amongst the most tolerant countries in Europe, if not the most

And if you read the transcript, the implication from Lawrence that there is no racism because it is tolerant, lovely country.

Do you think there is no racism in this country?

rockingchaircandle · 19/01/2020 20:17

@Oakenbeach

Please could you define, or expand on

more traditional sense of British, or more particularly English, identity felt by those outside London and our other metropolitan melting pots

malylis · 19/01/2020 20:17

No one said its just down to racism, however some of it is!

Strawmen abound here.

LaurieMarlow · 19/01/2020 20:20

I actually agree that the UK is one of the mist tolerant countries in Europe.

However, there is still systemic racism.

chomalungma · 19/01/2020 20:20

If you criticise Meghan or Diane Abbot, that does not make you racist.
If you are a racist, chances are you will criticise them.

Just like Brexit. I don't think I have heard anyone say that if you voted for Brexit, then you are racist. I do think that it's quite likely that racists voted for Brexit.

Yet somehow the narrative is that some people who voted Brexit think they are being called racists.

Just like some people think that because the media are against MM, then they must be racist.

As people have said, how much of the criticism is fuelled by racism.

iwunderwhy · 19/01/2020 20:22

@TheRealMcKenna - Here's his other opinions you may or may not agree with:

...."The most annoying thing is the minute a black actor - it's the same with working class actors - the minute they've got five million quid in the bank, every interview they do is about how racism is rampant and rife in the industry.
"And with working class actors, 'There's not enough working class actors'."You weren't saying that when you didn't have a f pot to piss in were you?

On women..
We were walking down the road and she was talking about how good the Gillette advert was. I just looked at her and went, ‘Bye. Sorry, I can’t do this with you.’”

So only his posh nobness is allowed an opinion... and he gets a nationwide platform to air them because of family connections and nepotism that's given him opportunities AND opened doors the ordinary and masses can never dream of.

You see how this works right??

LaurieMarlow · 19/01/2020 20:26

What a fucking knob.

HeIenaDove · 19/01/2020 20:26

'"There's not enough working class actors'."You weren't saying that when you didn't have a f pot to piss in were you"

And how does he know this? They werent being listened to when they were non famous. Being as how the very dint of being non famous is no one ever listens or WANTS to listen. See Grenfell residents PRE fire!

Thick bastard!
