Laurence Fox on Question Time

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:00

It isn't ok to try and shut anyone up with remarks about their skin colour. It doesn't matter if that skin colour is white, black or green with purple spots.

His fellow actors have been told to "denounce" him. It looks like he can wave goodbye to his career. What lovely tolerant people the ultra woke are.

@GulliBelle

Have you met him enough times to judge that he's "not a nice person"?

No.

If you don't like his views then argue your case. See if you can do it without the personal insults.

she said he was coming from a place of white privilege in NO WAY did she make a derogatory remark about his skin colour white privilege is a thing - like male privilege - he - as a posh white man was telling a black woman that the uk 'is a lovely place' and racism isn't a issue - he's a twat

Goodbye to his acting career? Nah. He’s white, he’s male, he’ll be fine.

I cringed at what he said, the massive bellend. Bet Billie Piper is relieved she got shot of him. What an embarrassment.

Housewife2010 · 17/01/2020 20:29

I don't think the negative criticism about Meghan was due to her race. I remember far worse criticism about Fergie in the eighties when race wasn't an issue.

PurpleDaisies · 17/01/2020 20:29

People are calling him an utter knobber, massive twat etc but you’ve called out someone for saying he’s not a nice person? Confused

ghostyslovesheets · 17/01/2020 20:29

@GulliBelle - probably not since they don't even understand the term white privilege

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:30

@GulliBelle
And you're calling him nasty?

You're a real thinker, make no mistake.

if you’ve ever heard him sing, you would know that there is nothing good in him. nothing.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/01/2020 20:32

He comes from a famous family, he went to one of the most expensive schools in the country, he works in a well paid comfortable profession (TV acting).
I wouldn’t be surprised if his knowledge of how many people live and the issues they might face was somewhat limited.

derxa · 17/01/2020 20:34

Otherwise the left eats itself The left is eating itself. Look at the Labour Party

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:35

@PurpleDaisies

I did call out the knobber one.

Some people can't make their point without name calling.

Jesus. Just looked him up - he went to bloody Harrow! Not just white privilege - ALL the privilege. No wonder he was defensive and attacking towards the woman on QT.

AsleepAllDay · 17/01/2020 20:37

He came off as an absolute knob.

Luckily he's got family money though

Pukkatea · 17/01/2020 20:37

Calling out white privilege isn't being derogatory about someone based on their skin colour - it's a simple observation that white people don't suffer racial discrimination like people of colour. It only turns into a judgement when people, like prime example Fox, try to deny it and gaslight people of colour about their experiences of racism that he has no knowledge of nor does he care to educate himself about, because his privilege allows him to find the struggles of those experiencing racism 'boring'. That's not being a nice or empathetic person.

Dobbytheelf · 17/01/2020 20:38

The bit about the UK being lovely was weird but other than that he should be entitled to his opinion and be able to voice it without being told to shut the fuck up because he has white male privilege. I mean, I don't care enough to get frothy or hate MM but if my opinion mattered I'm not very keen on her. Both she and Harry KNEW what she was marrying into, they knew about Diana, they knew about the scrutiny the Royal Family are under day in, day out. They knew she had history that would come out within her family and being married before/ a famous actress. They had a lot if advisors whose job it is to predict potential backlashes and raise them. If it's all so racist (I'm not saying it isn't from the small, vile minority) why did 'Waity Katy' suffer much the same? Why did Diana get hounded and scrutinised to death? People have short memories and it does stink of 'wokeness', Kate was accused of being a commoner, of letting William sleep around in order to win him, of all sorts. She kept in line which is what every member of the RF are expected to do and they are well aware of it and now she's the nation's sweetheart!

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 17/01/2020 20:38

I don't think it is goodbye to his acting career actually. I think we need some balance to the rigid and pervasive current wokeness and he's bringing it. I think a lot of people probably agree with him.

Peapod29 · 17/01/2020 20:39

Pukkatea well said.

Iggly · 17/01/2020 20:39

I’m a leftie but I’m no way “woke” whatever that fucking means.

The problem with the phrase white privilege is that it can inadvertently shut people down.

It’s a way of trying to get people to acknowledge that, actually, you need to try and empathise with people who’ve had different experiences from you. And ask yourself why they’ve experienced them and how that must feel.

It’s wrong to just dismiss it by “whatabouttery”. Which is what has been happening time and time again.

At the end of the day there’s some reason why MM has been vilified in certain sections of the media for doing the same things that another woman did. It could be because she’s Canadian (swept up as American), it could be because she’s mixed. It could be because she’s not “posh, white British”.

Either way it stinks.

LuluJakey1 · 17/01/2020 20:39

The woman was ridiculous. Based on her argument, no white man would ever be allowed to express a view about any behaviour of a black or mixed race woman- presumably that would include men married to those women, or who manage them at work, or who are affected by their decisions or behaviour.

It assumes anything said about their behaviours is racist and/or sexist. It puts black and mixed race women beyond criticism.

I assume the same can be said about black men and white women. No views allowed to be expressed.

Does it also work with white women and black men? They can not have a view? Or black women and white men?

It is utterly ridiculous. Megan Markle is an educated woman who makes educated choices. Those choices are not beyond public comment and opinion- and that is not necessarily racist or sexist.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/01/2020 20:40

I didn’t agree with his initial comments about the whole Meghan thing not being racist. Though I do think it’s not all due to racism at all.

But I also didn’t like the university lecturer shouting him down due to his white privilege. But then I’m slightly on the fence as I do agree with her point that as a white man he quite probably won’t notice the racism. But it was badly worded by her but then live tv isn’t the best forum to have a reasoned discussion.

Don’t think I’ve ever watched a tv programme with him in so if it is the end of his career I won’t notice or care.

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:40

@dorisdog How could he be defensive and attacking at the same time?

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheets · 17/01/2020 20:40

he wasn't told to 'shut the fuck up' he was challenged on his down playing of racism as an issue in the UK - which he - as a white person - really can't have much experience of - he was telling black people that it was all lovely - they where right to challenge that - she did - politely

wonderstuff · 17/01/2020 20:40

I think he came across as a bit of a twat. I'm sure he'll be fine, his views seem to be depressingly popular.

hueyblue · 17/01/2020 20:40

So sick of cancel culture. It's not going to end well, 1984 here we come!
