Laurence Fox on Question Time

It isn't ok to try and shut anyone up with remarks about their skin colour. It doesn't matter if that skin colour is white, black or green with purple spots.

His fellow actors have been told to "denounce" him. It looks like he can wave goodbye to his career. What lovely tolerant people the ultra woke are.

ghosty he didn’t say that and this case, nuance is important

He was saying that’s it better than other parts of Europe- I don’t know, I can’t speak for that.

But I can certainly speak for rellies in the Windrush who’d agree with him that this “white privilege” term is reductive, unhelpful and a similar experience to when they arrived and couldn’t rent flats because “no dogs, no blacks, no Irish”. Dad also had a gay best mate, so he wanted extra points!

Mum keeps telling me Fergie was treated the same. I do think there’s sone racist elements to what MM has dealt with, but we’re adults, we can agree to disagree.

Nobody benefits from the way the conversations are conducted right now and I think it’s good that Fox said what he said. I also hate the term gammon and as clearly not okay to call me certain words, so why is gammon okay?

recycledbottle · 17/01/2020 20:42

In general he doesn't come across particularly well. Some people don't, like the OP for example.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/01/2020 20:44

waity Katy' suffer much the same? Why did Diana get hounded and scrutinised to death? People have short memories and it does stink of 'wokeness', Kate was accused of being a commoner, of letting William sleep around in order to win him, of all sorts. She kept in line which is what every member of the RF are expected to do and they are well aware of it and now she's the nation's sweetheart!

Exactly. She’s the nation’s sweetheart now because she hasn’t spoken in about the last 5 years. She’s kept her head down and got on with it. Camilla had the same treatment.

Beatrice and Eugene are frequently slagged off in the press.

It’s not a Meghan specific thing at all.

The only Royal the press seem to pretty much love is Zara Philips. And yes Kate now. And probably William. And all the kids obviously (for now).

ChicChicChicChiclana · 17/01/2020 20:44

Yep, he embarrassed himself. Twit.

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:45

@recycledbottle

Nah, it's people who make personal remarks rather than arguing their case who don't come across well.

who is suggesting people with no actual direct daily experience of racism, sexism, homophobia stop telling those who do what it's all about even in the same ball park as banning black or Irish people from renting rooms - that just too much of a leap

Privileged people have been shutting down real peoples lived experience for centuries - funny how they don;t like a tiny taste of their own medicine - he said the exact same thing by the way t0 a BME radio presenter on R5 earlier that day - I rolled my eyes then as well

tillytoodles1 · 17/01/2020 20:45

I like Laurence Fox but he is white, rich and privileged. Whatever happens to him won't affect my life in any way.

AutumnRose1 · 17/01/2020 20:48

ghosty if that was for me, I’m really sorry I didn’t get it

TheRealMcKenna · 17/01/2020 20:49

It seems like white people told black people what to do for centuries and now we get to tell them what to think and feel instead.

Wow. This is an approach that’s going to go really well....

ghostyslovesheets · 17/01/2020 20:50

sorry you compared using the term 'white privilege' with refusing to rent rooms to Irish or Black families - I am arguing it really isn't the same thing

hueyblue · 17/01/2020 20:50

I don't think the poor white working class girls in Manchester who were the victims of the latest grooming gang to be in the news (Mumsnet has been strangely quiet on this subject...) and who were horribly abused, raped and used as slaves would consider themselves beneficiaries of "white privilege". In fact, it seems their ethnicity worked completely against them, both in terms of who their abusers chose to target and then the massive cover up of their suffering by the police, all in the name of tolerance.

ghostyslovesheets · 17/01/2020 20:53

well not all of them where white - but they are certainly victims of male privilege and class prejudice

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 17/01/2020 20:54

and now we get to tell them what to think and feel instead

Indeed. I've seen an increasing number of threads on here where we are told that "it's racist if a POC says it is whether you realise it or not and you must accept that". Any denial is just yet more evidence you're an in denial racist. I find it really worrying and I won't accept it.

HeresMe · 17/01/2020 20:54

I like him stop shutting down different opinions to you, the anti facists become facists.

Stick your head above a parapet let's destroy your career it's scary.

Remember he was sat next to shami I see racism everywhere but can't find any anti semitism in labour party.

Geoffreythecat · 17/01/2020 20:55

I don't know why they have actors on QT. Their opinions are no more relevant, interesting or representative than anyone's in the audience.

1Morewineplease · 17/01/2020 20:56

I really empathised with him. Why should a woman top trump a man for labour leadership ? It should be voted on by leadership skills, intellect, ability , empathy and common sense. Not by sex.

As to the Markle question... no! People aren’t being racist... it’s just that certain sections of the media and population, just don’t accept a commoner who happened to capture the heart of a prince and wants a new way forward for her family , instead of dressing her boy in girl’s clothes, grouse shooting , church at Sandringham, bagpipes at dawn at Balmoral and asking a liveried footman for a new loo roll.
It’s not racism .. it’s a change from the current stuffiness that Royal devotees just wont accept.

Pukkatea · 17/01/2020 20:57

White privilege doesn't mean that nothing bad ever happened to a white person. It means that on the whole they don't experience discrimination and difficulty on the basis of their skin colour.

It's really not that hard a concept to grasp, certain people here seem determined not to. If you think that telling someone they don't experience racism is as bad as racism itself, then frankly you're a bloody idiot.

ghostyslovesheets · 17/01/2020 20:57

his opinion wasn't shut down it was challenged - do you honestly think he knows a great deal about the impact of day to day racism on BME people in the UK? Really

The big thing about having an opinion is you should be prepared to have it challenged

AutumnRose1 · 17/01/2020 20:58

ghosty no I didn’t say that at all

I explained my relatives arrived to face that kind of discrimination and they agree with Fox and his remarks - he’s saying that the term “white privilege” is racist and unhelpful and as a non white family, we agree with him.

I just like to say this because there’s a perception - maybe just on Twitter - that only white people support his comments.

HeresMe · 17/01/2020 20:58

The white privilege thing is old , welcome to Rotherham with Asian grooming gangs still operating, abusing underage white girls what a privilege.

Disquieted1 · 17/01/2020 20:58

A 'white privileged male' was invited onto Question Time to give his opinions only to be told that his opinions are not valid because he is a WPM.
Bizarre

Fifipopopo · 17/01/2020 20:59

Billie tried to tell us.

AnyOldPrion · 17/01/2020 20:59

How can a white person from a privileged background think they can possibly dismiss racism as boring.

Racism isn’t boring, and it sounds like he was tactless, to say the least, but the current hyper-woke culture, where arseholes scream “check your privilege” at other people in a way that will have no effect other than to alienate everyone who hears is deathly boring.

Not only that, but cancel culture has a direct effect on the arts. Young adult literature can’t go out until it’s been read by “sensitivity readers”. Authors are no longer allowed to include anything unless it’s within their personal sphere of influence. Male actors are decried for playing male to female transitioners. It’s been suggested straight actors shouldn’t be allowed to play gay parts.

One day, the majority who are currently pandering to this oppressive culture will wake up and break free. Can’t come too soon for me.

Bluerussian · 17/01/2020 21:00

I thought he was pretty reasonable on QT last night, don't know what the controversy is about frankly.

AutumnRose1 · 17/01/2020 21:00

Ghosty “ do you honestly think he knows a great deal about the impact of day to day racism on BME people in the UK? ”

I don’t know. But the woke crowd certainly don’t care about the impact they are having on race relations or how it affects my daily life. In fact a lot of the woke folk will call me a coconut. It’s “sit down, shut up and think the way I want people of your colour to think”.
