My husband and I have recently bought our first property.
It is near Welling High Street. So it is in The London borough of Bexley but some say it is in Kent
Welling station is in zone 4. So simple question. Would you say Welling is in Kent or London please?

Easily within the confines of Greater London, not even really close.

I think the general consensus is that anything within the M25 is London, but I don't fully agree with this, but there is no way Welling is anywhere near Kent.

SheilaBruce · 16/01/2020 13:00

(Outer) London.

Same argument applies to Brent (London Borough) and Harrow (Middlesex). The postcode is HA for Harrow and technically Middlesex, but it sits in LB Brent.

In discussion, it's London. When addressing an envelope it's Middlesex. See, easy!

Thank you, we are moving from 250 plus miles away so want to understand what the 'local' opinion is.

no way Welling is anywhere near Kent.
Seeing as Bexley used to formally be in Kent, that's just not really true. It's damn close.

Buster72 · 16/01/2020 13:05

It's on the map as bexley which is a London borough.

The m25 is not the boundary of London. Parts of Herts Essex Surrey are all inside the m25 and proudly not London. Watford Herts for example

MollysMummy2010 · 16/01/2020 13:06

Middlesex hasn't existed since the 1960's....

NoWayNoHow · 16/01/2020 13:08

What's the first bit of the postcode?

Whatisreal · 16/01/2020 13:08

I was born in Welling but moved at a young age - still have a lot of family there. Nobody considers themselves a Londoner!

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 13:09

There's an easy way to work this out....

  1. Do you pay Council Tax to:
    a) The London Borough of Bexley
    b) Kent County Council

  2. If you refuse to pay your Council Tax to the London Borough of Bexley will you be arrested by:
    a) The London Metropolitan Police
    b) Kent Police

The borders were redrawn decades ago. Welling was once Kent, it's not anymore. Personally if people are going to refuse to acknowledge border changes and wish to arbitrarily cling on to out of date maps then I'd say I was in the province of Britannia within the Roman Empire. That's as valid as saying it's Kent, and a lot more ambitious.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/01/2020 13:11

I live in Bromley, interchangeable between kent and london, I use both. Though I'd say London if pushed, as I vote in London Mayor elections and get London news on the tv.

Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 13:11

Middlesex hasn't existed since the 1960's....

Yup. Nowhere is technically Middlesex, because it hasn't existed since 1965.

Welling is in London. If it's in a London Borough, it's not Kent, Essex, Surrey, Middlesex or anywhere else. It's London. It may have been in the past, but not now.

Postal addresses don't include counties anymore:

Mumdiva99 · 16/01/2020 13:12

The first bit of the postcode is DA. (My bil lives there and I always think of it as Kent. Or outer London. We always access from M25 so don't equate it to being near 'London' as such.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 13:12

We dont collect the keys for another few weeks but Welling High Street is DA16 (so not a London postcode?) And in think/assume webeill be paying council tax to Bexley

*I think, sorry

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 16/01/2020 13:13

It's both, it's in thr London borough of bexley but the county of Kent.

ElderAve · 16/01/2020 13:14

Lots of places now find themselves in Metropolitan London that used to be in the home counties. Accurately, today, Welling is in London but historically it was Kent and many will still consider it to be so. Other counties have had boundary changes too. E.g I was born in Dorset but the town is now in Hampshire.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 13:17

So when I write my address would I put at the end

Bexley
Postcode

Or

Kent
Postcode?

OP posts:
20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 13:18

I know this is a little daft to not know this btw!

OP posts:
Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 13:20

It's both, it's in thr London borough of bexley but the county of Kent.

No, it's not in the country of Kent. It might have been in the past, but not now.

AdoptedBumpkin · 16/01/2020 13:20

Generally you don't need to write a county on an address as long as the postcode is correct. (It is nice to know, of course.)

MarySidney · 16/01/2020 13:21

I was born in Welling but moved at a young age - still have a lot of family there. Nobody considers themselves a Londoner!

Yes x 1,000! The postal address is Kent, the postcode is Dartford, people get really pissed off at being told they live in 'Southeast London'.

I identify as a Kentish maid, not a Londoner.Smile

Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 13:21

@20wedding19

Bexley
Postcode.

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 13:21

The address of the Tesco Express in Welling, for example, is:

124 Bellegrove Rd
Welling
DA16 3QR

Postal addresses do not, and have not for a good while, used counties.

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 13:23

"Yes x 1,000! The postal address is Kent, the postcode is Dartford, people get really pissed off at being told they live in 'Southeast London'."

No, no it's not, the postal address doesn't say anything about Kent.

"I identify as a Kentish maid, not a Londoner."

You'd has as much justification to identify as a citizen or the Roman Empire. Borders change.
