My husband and I have recently bought our first property.
It is near Welling High Street. So it is in The London borough of Bexley but some say it is in Kent
Welling station is in zone 4. So simple question. Would you say Welling is in Kent or London please?

I'm the next postcode along from you and I say SE London.

Welcome to Bexley!

user1471517900 · 16/01/2020 14:25

YABU for not including the place name in the title, and so making me click on thread to see if it was local to me. Angry

SilverDragonfly1 · 16/01/2020 14:26

I love the benefit of uncertainty, as I can tell people I'm from London or from Kent depending on which seems more descriptive.

So odd to see the non-descriptive title then find it's about my actual town :D

Tonkerbea · 16/01/2020 14:27

Bexley woods and Hall Place and Gardens are lovely 😊

SilverDragonfly1 · 16/01/2020 14:27

Sounds like we need a Welling meet up!

Regarding places of interest, Woodlands Farm and Severndroog Castle are both on Shooters Hill.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 14:28

@Pinkflipflop85 - we are TTC now so fingere crossed!
I am starting a nanny job though when we move so child friendly suggestions more than welcome. Nanny children are under 5 x

And The Red House, Chislehurst Caves (just a little way away), and the jewel in the crown which is the Furze Wren in Bexleyheath.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 14:28

Fingers ffs. Should read my posts before posting them

Definitely the farm then. There is a toddler group there on Thursday morning and you can wander round and look at the animals any time it's open for free (donations appreciated I imagine!).

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 16/01/2020 14:33

@20wedding19 Yes, Bluewater is definitely Kent . Greenhithe.

berlinbabylon · 16/01/2020 14:33

I live in Bromley, interchangeable between kent and london, I use both

MIL lives in Lewisham but on the border. She always uses Kent for the address although I know technically they are not used but lots of websites do ask for the county. Counties do still exist even if they are not used by Royal Mail.

A BR postcode says Kent to me. A SE postcode says Greater London. Likewise Kingston (which is the county town of Surrey anyway) - KT postcode is Surrey, SW postcode is London.

DA postcode would say Kent to me, not London. Dartford is definitely Kent.

Although I'd have said TW postcode wasn't London, but Twickenham feels like London to me :)

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 14:36

"Most addresses will be welling, kent DA...."

Officially no address will have Kent in them, none, not even that that are really in Kent. The Royal Mail no longer put Counties/Boroughs in addresses.

People can add them back in if they want to, and the Royal Mail will just ignore them. But why be boring and go for Kent? If you're going to put one of the places that the address used to be in then be ambitious! Go for "The Roman Province of Britannia", or "Maxima Caesariensis" if you like your Latin.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 16/01/2020 14:36

Your MIL is likely in my area @berlinbabylon

Our postcode is BR1 Bromley and our council is Lewisham , SE13.
This was the same when I was growing up . We lived then in SE13 but rent went to nearby Greenwich SE10 . Boundary things.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 14:37

Thanks for all the suggestions! All going well, we will be moving there in 3 weeks

Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 15:39

There is no such thing as a Kent postcode. Loads of postcodes cover Kent. TN, DA, CT etc. Some postcodes where the first two letters cover areas of Kent also can have the same two letters covering areas that aren't in Kent, but are in London. Such as DA.

This isn't unique to London/Kent borders. UB8 is in London, but UB9 is in Buckinghamshire.

Your postcode doesn't tell you if you are in Kent or London. Who do you pay your council tax to tells you. If you're in the London Borough of whatever, you aren't in Kent, Bucks, Surrey or anywhere else. You're in London.

Whether or not it "feels like London" matters not one jot. As someone else said, when the Met police come to your home with a search warrant, try telling them you want Kent police and see how far you get.

Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 15:42

They are not interchangeable. When you use London, you are right, and when you use Kent, you are wrong.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/01/2020 16:08

WhentheRabbitsWentWild you’re spookily similar to me, grew up se3 paying in Greenwich. Now one of the first BR roads that pays bromley council, had a lot of questions about lewisham borough schools that are closer to me than bromley.

Lifecraft I stand corrected - just googled, Bromley doesn’t fall under Kent at all...wonder why I got that wrong Hmm

DappledThings · 16/01/2020 16:12

@BadgersPaws2 I am delighted to find someone else as obsessed as me as pointing out counties shouldn't be in addresses.

Going to try to find the thread from a few months ago where I argued about it for days!

DappledThings · 16/01/2020 16:18

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3710665-To-be-annoyed-at-people-who-live-in-a-London-Borough-but-insist-they-dont-i-e-Im-in-Surrey-Kent-etc?pg=1&order=

There. Counties in addresses discussed at great length.

There are a lot of web forms that still ask for it. Where it is a free text box is put N/a. If it is a dropdown I put Kent and get annoyed.

TeachesOfPeaches · 16/01/2020 16:18

@SheilaBruce Harrow is a place and a London Borough and Brent is a borough next door.

Kizziebel · 16/01/2020 16:27

@SheilaBruce Same argument applies to Brent (London Borough) and Harrow (Middlesex). The postcode is HA for Harrow and technically Middlesex, but it sits in LB Brent.
No, Harrow is not in Brent, Harrow is in LB Harrow, HA postcodes do exist in Brent the same way as UB postcodes exist in LB Ealing

@Lifecraft This isn't unique to London/Kent borders. UB8 is in London, but UB9 is in Buckinghamshire.
UB9 is London Borough of Hillingdon not Buckinghamshire

Hingeandbracket · 16/01/2020 16:39

Does anyone outside London/SE have these battles? I mean how important can it actually be?

Hingeandbracket · 16/01/2020 16:42

@DappledThings and @BadgersPaws2
I have found my people - I have the argument about Counties in Addressees on a regular basis.

As for people saying somewhere has "a Kent Postcode" that's just batshit - there is NO SUCH THING.

Hingeandbracket · 16/01/2020 16:44

Postcodes relate to post towns on the whole, not counties. Hence there are lots of "anomalies". NG10 (Nottingham) is in Derbyshire, DE55 (Derby) is in South Yorkshire.
