My husband and I have recently bought our first property.
It is near Welling High Street. So it is in The London borough of Bexley but some say it is in Kent
Welling station is in zone 4. So simple question. Would you say Welling is in Kent or London please?

Thank you!

I think you'll find your address would be

Welling
Kent
DA16

@Bluntness is correct borough of Bexley, county of Welling.

itbemay1 · 16/01/2020 13:34

But to add Bexley is classed as Greater London !

Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 13:36

You'd has as much justification to identify as a citizen of the Roman Empire. Borders change.

^THIS x 1000.

I could identify as a citizen of Pangea.....because where I was born was in Pangea......335 million years ago.

People in Welling can identify as being in Kent to their heart's content. The facts don't give a fuck about people's feelings. Welling is not in Kent.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 13:39

Interesting to see the difference in opinions - I don't feel so embarrassed that I didnt know now Smile

I think you'll find your address would be Welling Kent DA16

I think you'll find you're wrong. It's not in Kent. '

Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 13:41

Interesting to see the difference in opinions

By difference of opinions, you meant those that are correct (not in Kent) and those that are wrong (still in Kent)

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 13:47

"Interesting to see the difference in opinions - I don't feel so embarrassed that I didnt know now "

I grew up in an area that had been absorbed by London about 20 years before. I know well how many people still felt very attached to the old county that it used to be a part of. Even now 55 years after the borders were changed I still know people who say "we're not London, we're the county of X."

But people who cling on to the old borders and identities are just stating their opinions. As far as every current definition goes places like Welling, and where I grew up, are now London.

In the end even the most ardent "I'm not in London" person pays their Council Tax to a London borough. So they know where they live. They may not like it, but they know.

In another few decades it will seem as ridiculous to claim that Welling isn't London as it would be seen to claim that Southwark, London since 1889, isn't either.

FloydWasACat · 16/01/2020 13:51

Bluntness has nailed it

PatriciaHolm · 16/01/2020 13:54

The Post Office themselves seem to think it's in Kent...!

www.postoffice.co.uk/branchfinder2/1630148/welling

Welling
40 Bellegrove Road, Welling, Kent
DA16 3PY

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 13:56

"The Post Office themselves seem to think it's in Kent...!"

That's just an address that someone's type in, someone with an opinion that it's Kent, and they're wrong.

Try looking the address up on the actual royal mail postcode system and you get:
Post Office
40 Bellegrove Road
WELLING
DA16 3PY

Middlesex may have been absorbed into greater London but drive on the Oxhey lane and you will see a sign welcoming you to the county.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 13:58

@BadgersPaws2 I like it that people are so strongly attached to certain areas. My dad was in the RAF whilst I was growing up so I moved around a fair bit when I was a child and never felt that way about a place

Same area as @OnlyFoolsnMothers I am in . I say Bromley is Kent as it has a non London postcode BUT its really not like how you imagine Kent . Further out is lovely though and Hayes Lane (5 minute drive from Bromley centre) has a farm and a lovely village feel in Hayes.

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 14:01

"Middlesex may have been absorbed into greater London but drive on the Oxhey lane and you will see a sign welcoming you to the county."

The one that looks a bit odd and not quite like other county signs?

I suspect it's the Golf club down the road doing it under the impression that it makes the place sound posher :)

Lifecraft · 16/01/2020 14:05

Middlesex may have been absorbed into greater London but drive on the Oxhey lane and you will see a sign welcoming you to the county.

There are lots of out of date signs all over the country kept alive for nostalgic / sentimental / historical presevation reasons.

20wedding19 · 16/01/2020 14:07

@WhentheRabbitsWentWild - your it feels like comment - yep - walking around Welling to me feels like London and not Kent. Different to when you jump on the bus down to the shopping centre, Bluewater, now that feels like Kent? To me anyway

Nothing useful to add, just - enjoy your new home! I used to live in Bexley, great place

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 14:12

@20wedding19 I grew up pretty much on the outer edge of, what was then, the new London Borough. I also have a real fascination with history, identity and liminal things. So I find all this "we're in this county" and "no we're not we're in London" thing really interesting.

inwood · 16/01/2020 14:14

I'm down the road in Bromley. Official post code is Kent. It's a London Borough. Very confused. My sister used to come to from down country and say she was visiting Kent. Not really! We are zone 4.

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 14:16

"I'm down the road in Bromley. Official post code is Kent"

No, you're official post code is not Kent. Enter your postcode in here and I bet a packet of biscuits that it won't say "Kent".

@Tonkerbea - thank you. I've wandered around the area a lot and found all the lovely parks, Danson Park? Any other good spots to know about?

SilverDragonfly1 · 16/01/2020 14:22

Welcome to Welling!

We are a Greater London borough, but the postcode is Kent. Start driving up Shooters Hill and you'll be in London proper- it's that close.

Pinkflipflop85 · 16/01/2020 14:23

Ooh you're moving local to me.
Welling is a london borough that still has a Kent postcode, as others have pointed out. Most addresses will be welling, kent DA....

There are loads of lovely woods around. Do you have children? Could give you lots of places to go!

BadgersPaws2 · 16/01/2020 14:24

@20wedding19 Lesnes Abbey is worth a visit. The ruins are of an abbey nearly 1000 years old, it was founded by someone involve with the murder of Thomas Becket and maybe have been in penance for that. "They do say" that the Thames used to come up to its walls and that there is a Roman dock there. You can also go up into the woods and go fossil hunting, finding sharks teeth is pretty easy.

Eltham Palace is also lovely. A medieval palace well preserved when it was renovated into an art-deco home.

So much stuff around there.
