Is using disabled toilets to avoid awkward interactions in gendered toilets U?

Yanbu - no
Yabu - yes

Just seen something online where someone who is 'non binary' has said they have bought a radar key so they can use disabled toilets to avoid awkward interactions and dont feel safe in using either the ladies or gents toilets. Whats the stance on this?

I personally feel that disabled and accessible toilets are there for those who need them due to accessibility reasons only and shouldn't be used by anyone else. I can equally see how using the gents might not feel safe but feel like the awkwardness of using the ladies should be endured considering how awkward someone needing the disabled toilets might feel if they didnt make it in time due to an orherwise able bodied person using their toilet.

Thoughts?

Awkwardly phrased. They should not use the disabled toilets. They should use the ones that correspond to their sex.

So people on her have said a trans or NB person using the female toilets is dangerous to the non trans or NB person and bad blah blah blah... yet you moan when they find a different option... see how it’s difficult for them?

this is a really old goady thread that was started in January.

I do understand the concerns of women who want to protect single sex spaces, but ....

It sounds like you don't!

Everyone has the right to feel safe when they go to the toilet. It's a basic human right.

Disabled/accessible toilets are not intended for people who don't fit into a clear male/female divide. However, if someone didn't feel safe in the male/female toilets because of their gender identity, I wouldn't begrudge them using the disabled toilet.

I think you have to draw that line though because not feeling comfortable/thinking other people have an issue with you being there, and actually feeling threatened. I can understand that there will be some scenarios where someone might be genuinely worried.

They need to use the toilet that is for their sex.

This is why gender is crap. Sex matters.

"Non binary" is a load of attention seeking tosh. They should use the toilets for their sex.

I just had to read a whole screed on my workplace's diversity blog from a young person who described themselves as non-binary. Young person had a male name. It was all introspective crap. There was no actual oppression or discrimination. Compare that with so many of the women I work with. Yet, he is the special sneughflake who gets all the credibility and assistance.

The only time I've seen a queue at disabled toilets has been at some sort of show or theatre, mostly, there is no queue and you can walk right in. I think if this is the case, what's the problem with someone using it.

MrsFogi · 21/07/2020 15:21

Ridiculous of the person - disability is not a choice. The person should simply use the loo that matches their biological sex.

rosiejaune · 21/07/2020 15:43

They are accessible toilets, not just disabled ones.

If neither of the other toilets are accessible to that person (because e.g. they are abused or threatened for going in there), then they should be able to use one that is. The reason is immaterial; their safety is the priority.

Of course toilets are sexist anyway, as there are never enough for women, and there should be more accessible /separate ones anyway if people are finding they have to queue for them (that is rarely the case when I use them for disability-related reasons).

So put your efforts into getting them redesigned for everyone's benefit, rather than judging someone who just needs to perform a vulnerable and urgent bodily function without people attacking them.
