I’ll give you a pass for off white.

Please someone tell me they also remember when the woman posted her roast dinner on a clear see through plate? #wistful

stripeypillowcase · 11/01/2020 20:33

yabu the more colourful the better

Laska2Meryls · 11/01/2020 20:33

I have Denby Imperial Blue ( and dont care!!)

dementedma · 11/01/2020 20:33

I'm amazed that people have more than one set of crockery - dead posh. I dont have room for more than what we can use and its whatever colour comes out of the pile first. You can tell I'm never going to make Ideal Homes magazine!
Nothing matches here, not in a eclectic deliberate way, more in a dont have much money and its not important to me kind of way. Currently drinking tea out of Ds' Everton mug, which I stirred with a fork (clean) because i couldnt find a teaspoon!

fligglepige · 11/01/2020 20:37

I have Denby Halo. Much nicer than boring white.

BedSprings · 11/01/2020 20:37

Cornish ware is lovely, I used to have lots of it - a big shop
near me used to sell seconds.
I used to display on the Welsh dresser. Smile

fligglepige · 11/01/2020 20:38

@IWishItWasSummer yours is beautiful.

stripeypillowcase · 11/01/2020 20:39

I'm amazed that people have more than one set of crockery

my lovely mil has several seasonal set: christmas/easter/birthday/valentines (probably left something out) I don't know where she leaves them all, her flat is tiny! and she definitely isn't posh.

Last time I thought I cared about this was when we did a wedding list. We pompously decided we were having a particular pattern of derby and a particular kind of cutlery. relatives soon burst that bubble - if the first shop they tried didn't stock the one we asked for they made like Asda and gave us a 'close' substitute.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/01/2020 20:43

I love those, IWishItWasSummer.

GorkyMcPorky · 11/01/2020 20:44

White porcelain here (just Sainsbury's). I do have a Cornishware set of my late DM's too.

SirVixofVixHall · 11/01/2020 20:47

I have white with gold , inherited and beautiful , kept for celebrations, and colourful ones for every day.
I do like a simple white plate , but I get seduced by colour .

Once was served ICECREAM ON A SQUARE PLATE. The horror. Half of it slid off.

Willow2017 · 11/01/2020 20:48

Nope boring. Never had a white dinner set nor cups nor mugs. I like a delicate pattern somewhere on plates or all over a mug.

My plates are a mish mash of old dinner sets, good job i never have dinner parties I suppose.😁
Obviously I am very uncool but tbh I don't care about anyone else's idea of the perfect dinner plate, just have what you like, I will too.😀

WhatsYourNumber · 11/01/2020 20:49

You're wrong.

Dinner sets should be white and white only. AIBU?
beanaseireann · 11/01/2020 20:50

I had ivory Heritage from Johnston brothers-like Eternal Beau without the pattern.
Johnston Brothers the feckers closed down and the replacements are an astronomical price Sad on those discontinued china for sale sites.

runoutofnamechanges · 11/01/2020 20:52

I sent one DC off to university with a set of that black Arcoroc crockery (including glasses) and the other DC with a 1980s white octagonal dinner service (I think it was made by the same company as Eternal Beau) thinking it didn't matter if they got broken/purloined. They were both unwanted housewarming gifts to their DF when he left university that had been languishing in the basement (the plates, not the DC). Then I saw how much the crockery sells for in the trendy vintage shops in East London... Grin

stripeypillowcase · 11/01/2020 20:53

as long as it's actually functional ware I don't really care.
I hate square plates and plates that are not deep enough to hold a decent amount of gravy or plates that don't have a rim to place those things you don't like.

CremeEggThief · 11/01/2020 20:54

YABU. I don't like white crockery, towels or bedding!

MintyMabel · 11/01/2020 20:57

We have square plates, they are much better to eat off of.

I don’t mind plates with a patterned edge, but I was in a restaurant that had blue plates with a flecked white pattern on them, it really put me off the food.

Tartyflette · 11/01/2020 20:59

I agree on the whole but have to confess to a fondness for these.
Especially with a croissant on.

Dinner sets should be white and white only. AIBU?
runoutofnamechanges · 11/01/2020 21:00

@beanaseireann That's the one!

Snoopdogsbitch · 11/01/2020 21:01

PP is definitely correct that bed linen should be white- unless you're under 16. Plates, I'm divided: good set ( wedding present) is white, every day set is white with polka dots and I like it.

stripeypillowcase · 11/01/2020 21:03

white linen - nooooo
that says hospital or cheap hotel to me.

QuiteForgetful · 11/01/2020 21:08

Love those dishes a lot LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

White is my least favorite colour, but it does look nice when all fancied up with crystal and silver ect. My mother would never have any other colour than white.
I have Denby Harliquin for everyday and Old Country Rose(passed along from mil)
I love China and could easily go bonkers buying various patterns except for we don't have the space. We have a few Corelle dishes for re-heating a plate of food in the microwave as the Denby is not the best for zapping. Plate gets hitter than the food.
I prefer tea from a white china cup. I swear it tastes differant in the Denby.

NarwhalsNarwhals · 11/01/2020 21:09

My plates don't match and none of them are plain white. Mum's never matched either and when I moved out money was really tight so I had a mismatched set of mums spare plates, then the DC wanted to chose their own plates. The added bonus is now they are older I know who hasn't brought their plate back coz I can see whose is missing.

I do have a black set MIL bought as the odd plates annoyed her so much but I never use them, mostly because i know it annoys MIL.
