I’ll give you a pass for off white.

Please someone tell me they also remember when the woman posted her roast dinner on a clear see through plate? #wistful

We have never managed to own proper sets of crockery and I'm not sure why. We're 50s/60s, fairly wealthy by most people's standards but somehow we have a real mishmash of charity shop, student leftovers and inherited stuff. I need to get my act together and buy some matching plates but I think I prefer cream to white. The cat eats out of a porcelain Victorian dish which is so ugly no human would want to use it. She's not fussy though.

RJnomore1 · 11/01/2020 20:01

Holy fuck that shoe.

I agree about white UNLESS you’re having a Mediterranean tapas or mezzo meal when I think it should be all earthenware colours.

I currently have the james Martin denby for everyday use.

nauticant · 11/01/2020 20:01

Your daughter took one for the team there TheWernethWife. I hope you have thanked her sufficiently.

Shockers · 11/01/2020 20:02

Our plates are creamy white and round.

Except the ones I eat off- they’re from the charity shop and all have different and beautiful patterns on. I ask for one every birthday

One day I’ll oust the white ones... mwhahaha!

youkiddingme · 11/01/2020 20:02

Me too swapsicles. I actually feel quite happy when a piece of boring crockery gets broken so I can replace it with something more interesting. Too lacking in space and careful about budget to do so otherwise. We have some lovely one-off hand made artisan pieces, some silly things from bargain shops, and vintage pieces from the second hand markets.

My mum bought a square set that included square mugs. It was a bugger getting the tea stains out of the corners.

autumnboys · 11/01/2020 20:09

I am devoted to my Imperial Blue Denby. We had it for our wedding, 20 years ago. My mum has it as well, which is very handy for borrowing.

White's okay, I suppose, but not if it’s six different sorts of mismatched shades and shapes (as it is in the kitchen at work).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/01/2020 20:11

My nanna had see through plates. They are a mid brown sepia tone glass and she has the majority of a full dinner set including teacups, saucers and dishes

We got these as a wedding present. They are fucking horrible and ended up in the charity shop . . . . . .

HerFemaleness · 11/01/2020 20:14

My dinner set is all colours, it's actually 3 different dinner sets. I get the really cheap set from Ikea and replace it every couple of years when chips/breakages have whittled down existing stock. Maybe when I'm not homing a small tribe of barbarians I'll purchase a decent set.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/01/2020 20:17

God how boring can life get.
We aren't even trying yet strangething Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/01/2020 20:22

What about these

Fuck off, Carrot!!!

Genevieva · 11/01/2020 20:22

I completely disagree, but I love ceramics, so have far more than I need. I have a particular soft spot for blue and white - printed Willow Pattern or painted Danish Blue. And I also love really old hand painted coffee cups and early Chinese export tea cups, but they probably doesn't count because we don't drink coffee out of them. They accumulate clutter coins and other small bits of clutter and create an unnecessary dusting job. I used to by them at village fetes as a child - in the days before bay when a village bric a brac stall would elicit an amber necklace and Victorian fans, both of which I also have. I know I should probably eBay the lot, but I can't bring myself to.

OhNoMyCheds · 11/01/2020 20:23

If my husband ever leaves me I am getting these beauties.

Having tried white plates, I gave up because they all got grey cutlery scratches on them.

I now use op shop plates/commemorative plates, all different, though I do think Japanese food looks best on white plate.

IWishItWasSummer · 11/01/2020 20:25

I have Wrendale crockery and love it.

Magpiesshinynest · 11/01/2020 20:27

Btw sorry if I’m a bit snappy, I shouldn’t take it out on MN I’ve had a bad day. Sorry.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/01/2020 20:27

That is bloody lovely summer!

olivertwistwantsmore · 11/01/2020 20:28

Nah. I like colour. Currently have plates with Paris scenes on and plates with beautiful flowers.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 11/01/2020 20:29

YANBU, plates should also be round not square or any other shape.

olivertwistwantsmore · 11/01/2020 20:30

Oh, we also have a Royal Doulton Trailfinders dinner service from our wedding over 29 years ago, which I still like!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/01/2020 20:30

White is a bit too bland. We have Villeroy and Boch 'Burgenland'; both blue and red. Omelets and scrambled eggs are always on blue. If anybody smashes it then they have a long hike to get a replacement.

The white china I've had for 20 years had never ever got grey stretches on it. Finally replaced some of it with a different brand thinking I'd just have to live with the plates being a bit thicker, less beautiful, and within weeks they've got stratch marks, and crazing in the middle.

I'm so annoyed as I was trying to be economical and it was just a waste of money.

The stuff for special never gets used anymore, but it's incredibly OTT. Gilt, colour, can't see the bloody food.

Greenvalleymama · 11/01/2020 20:32

I couldn't agree more! There really is no need for any other colour or shape plate or bowl. When I was pregnant I would actually feel sick eating off a patterned plate. It hasn't completely passed.
Bone China too please. If you love patterns/ colours/ pheasants etc please display these elsewhere 😂
