I’ll give you a pass for off white.

Please someone tell me they also remember when the woman posted her roast dinner on a clear see through plate? #wistful

HB2019, when I bought my dishes there was a square set that I loved, but I couldn't accept the square bowls. It's just a step too far.

LolalolaLola · 11/01/2020 18:32

I don't mind so much what colour they are but I don't mind so much as they are real plates.
I get inner rage when I'm served food on a roofing tile, cutting board, terracotta plant pot or little metal bucket. I know IBU however but I don't care.
I prefer plates where the centre is plain though so I can see what I'm eating, even if the rim is patterned. Also, I like them to be round as they fit in my dishwasher better.

nonsensicalmess · 11/01/2020 18:33

I'll blow all your minds - I was 'gifted' a SQUARE BLACK full dinner set several years ago! It paid it forward....

nonsensicalmess · 11/01/2020 18:34

I paid it forward, not it

ultrablue · 11/01/2020 18:34

Mine are white for the simple fact I am always having to replace at least one a week.. DH only has to look at a plate or glass and it smashes.

@Plugitinthen
I've had black plates from Tesco before now. They currently have a range where the outside is black and the inside white.

Pollaidh · 11/01/2020 18:34

Coat of arms - very old family, no internet shenanigans. Have to be washed by hand and as we have an absence of servants, I generally prefer the woolworths set.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/01/2020 18:34

I have two sets I use daily. One round with a blue pattern on a white background and one pyrex retro set called autumn glory. Mostly I use the oval steak size plates from the Pyrex set.

BarbarAnna · 11/01/2020 18:35

Surely though Willow pattern type thing is ok? And seaside-ish blue and white?

Squigean · 11/01/2020 18:35

Who's "the woman"?

See glass plates and glass mugs; but I've never seen never glass bowls (bowls you eat out of - cereal type - mean).

bridgetreilly · 11/01/2020 18:35

I love the one @Abibranning posted. Mine are similar in that they are mostly white, but have decoration over part of the plate. And they are MUCH nicer than boring plane white.

LolalolaLola · 11/01/2020 18:36

Have you seen this site? I particularly like the starter on a brick.

See, that's the sort of tomfoolery I have no truck with.

TruffleShuffles · 11/01/2020 18:36

I agree, it’s also much easier to replace things that get broken when you have a simple white dinner set as it’s not obvious if it isn’t an exact match.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 11/01/2020 18:36

Ours are blue (although our 'posh' ones are white with a gold/burgundy band round the edge) some of them have chips, most have scratches Wink

Also in the cupboard (and in use) are the My Little Pony melamine cereal bowl, and a turkey soup bowl (complete with picture of turkey on the side) which was 'bought' with vouchers from Shell petrol stations some time in the 80's Grin

SnorkMaiden81 · 11/01/2020 18:36

AND, simple fine glasswear!

I hate thick chunky or patterned tumblers/wine glasses.

Purpleartichoke · 11/01/2020 18:37

I’m guessing Op was born after the 70’s.

Grew up with black plates with a green vine pattern and ours were pretty sedate compared to the plates we encountered at friends houses.

HerkyBaby · 11/01/2020 18:38

My best china was inherited. There is a floral pattern to the edges of the predominantly white service. It is very special

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/01/2020 18:38

Most of our stuff is plain white, but I do love big bright platters for serving, and have several. My parents gave some beautiful 1970s Kilncraft china which is light brown and food looks gorgeous on it

Greenglassteacup · 11/01/2020 18:39

YABU. I have a couple of gorgeous vintage dinner sets and a load of lovely mismatched vintage plates etc. I’m not a plain white plate sort of woman Grin

Rachelfromfriends1 · 11/01/2020 18:39

I like white dinner sets as long as they’re of decent enough quality (ie not a £10 student bargain set). I think, if anything, they look nice - eg in photographs where it’s sort of reminiscent of a hotel (if you’re the type of person to take photos of your food that is!).

MidsomerMum · 11/01/2020 18:41

Generally agree. Though my sandwich plates are wooden and I love them! They look great with the white though. It’s funny, I never get bored of white. My patterned ones are boxed in the garage as spares.

PinkBuffalo · 11/01/2020 18:42

Yabu
I love colourful things, including plates. Actually I'll be eating out of a bowl that is turquoise on the outside and organge on the inside this evening.
Good thing we all like different things Smile

My mother had those for years and years and I always remembered them. I didn't know what they were called though.

PegasusReturns · 11/01/2020 18:43

Definitely white and only ever round.

Duvet covers and sheets must also only be white. Cushions, bead spreads and blankets for colour

gamerwidow · 11/01/2020 18:44

I like a brightly patterned dinner set myself unless it's in a restaurant and then only white plates acceptable.

midwest · 11/01/2020 18:44

I'm very fond of my older Spode sets although the hand washing puts me off using them too much.
I have some more modern stuff that can go through the dishwasher that is a variety of prints.
White is harmless but not much more.
