I’ll give you a pass for off white.

Please someone tell me they also remember when the woman posted her roast dinner on a clear see through plate? #wistful

Fucking hell, there are rules for everything on here

Ignore the madness.

Do what you want.

LoafEater · 11/01/2020 19:04

I find food looks really unappetising on coloured plates, it’s one of the very few things that put me off my food.

Toilet paper and towels should also be white.

Pjsandbaileys · 11/01/2020 19:05

Nothing worse and I mean nothing worse than the slate plates you get in pretentious restaurants give me the shivers when my fork touches it Shock

JellyfishandShells · 11/01/2020 19:06

*My nanna had see through plates. They are a mid brown sepia tone glass and she has the majority of a full dinner set including teacups, saucers and dishes.

They were a big trend in the 80s and every bugger had them. I only know this as when I bought my first house (within last 5 years) I was offered about 7 sets of the feckin' things from various relatives and family friends.

Ask an older person and I bet they've eaten off them/still have them in a cupboard somewhere*

@Soconfusedandlost Eek, flashbacks - I had a job in the 80s in PR that involved making syndicated puzzle competitions for local newspapers and then forwarding the winners names to the manufacturers for them to supply complete sets of this stuff. They were extremely popular - big number of entries ( so happy client because coverage ) Had loads of them in our sample cupboard and we gave them away to everyone we knew to make space !

At some point in the 80s there was a fad for octagonal plates, especially black octagonal plates somewhat like this.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 11/01/2020 19:08

My mum has octagonal plates, the Eternal Beau collection. She saves them for best, so they only come out at Christmas and New Year Grin

Miljea · 11/01/2020 19:09

I grew up with these!

Dinner sets should be white and white only. AIBU?
Greenglassteacup · 11/01/2020 19:10

I think as long as they’re actual plates and not a slab of slate or a terracotta tile, it’s all good

RomaineCalm · 11/01/2020 19:11

I give you octagonal 'Eternal Beau' - the height of dinner party sophistication in the 80's.

Dinner sets should be white and white only. AIBU?
Fr0g · 11/01/2020 19:11

Yes, white - although I do have the remains of one of those brown pyrex sets mentioned above - purchased for £5 (less staff discount from woolies saturday job) when I left home 42 years ago.

And the inside of mugs - definitely only white or glass.

Too lazy to write my opinion again.

Also, enjoy my epic battle with @MistyCloud 😂

RomaineCalm · 11/01/2020 19:13

Crossed posts AndNoneForGretchen. Smile

I'm fairly sure my mum has some stashed away somewhere.

joystir59 · 11/01/2020 19:14

White simple dinner service from Wilko against our home made hand hewn oak table. The dinner service cost less than £10 and the wood for the table was free, we just bought coach bolts and Danish oil.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/01/2020 19:14

Oh god, eternal beau!

They used to sell them individually in TJ Hughes in case you broke one.

Gogolego · 11/01/2020 19:14

Everyday plates are white centre with a blue rim

The posh stuff which only comes out at Christmas is white with a small blue flower motif on it

motherheroic · 11/01/2020 19:15

@Soconfusedandlost I love using the cup from that set for my tea because you can hold the outside of them without getting burnt!

percheron67 · 11/01/2020 19:15

Mine are round, white and with a delicate border of navy blue and gold. Classic.

TheWernethWife · 11/01/2020 19:17

I have Imperial Blue Denby for special occasions (Christmas, Easter) otherwise I have plain white.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/01/2020 19:17

My dinner plates are white...

.. With patterns of horned sea horses on 😍😍😍

LoafEater · 11/01/2020 19:19

My mates mum had the entire eternal beau set, even down to the salt and pepper pots. I thought they were the poshest.

Phineyj · 11/01/2020 19:19

We have Villeroy and Boch Twist Alea. Food looks amazing on them especially Italian things.

AndromedaPerseus · 11/01/2020 19:20

I don’t like deep defined rims on dinner plates it’s a nightmare as it reduces the room for food. I agree white plates are best

MayFayner · 11/01/2020 19:20

Wow, looking at that Eternal Beau photo has given me flashbacks of many evenings spent staring down at it with as-yet-uneaten mashed carrot and suede turnip. I won’t eat it. It’ll go stone cold and I won’t get any Vienetta Sad

I have white plates but recently I’ve been finding them boring and wanting a change.

Blibbyblobby · 11/01/2020 19:20

Definitely white. Although I stretched white a bit to include these:

speakout · 11/01/2020 19:20

I agree.

Plates will get broken.
If you opt for coloured sets you will end up with a mish mash over the years.
White plates always match. When breaks occur replace with similar white plates.
Apart from a few serving plates all my crockery is white.
