I’ll give you a pass for off white.

Please someone tell me they also remember when the woman posted her roast dinner on a clear see through plate? #wistful

You’re not in a bloody restaurant

sanityisamyth · 11/01/2020 18:45

Schools have plain white plates. I'd rather have a bit of variety.

MontanaSkies · 11/01/2020 18:46

Food looks more appetising to me on white plates.

A problem I've noticed with black plates (even on TV shows like Masterchef) is that they show up every smear or fingerprint. So the chef makes a beautiful dish, then picks it up to present to Greggggg Wallace and bam! Big sweaty thumb print visible on the side. Envy

ActualHornist · 11/01/2020 18:47

@Soconfusedandlost smoked glass! My granny had some - probably still does actually.

Mine are white with flowers on, and a few pink Ikea bowls.

I’d dislike see through, HATE the few square ones we’ve got, but otherwise don’t really mind.

Tombliwho · 11/01/2020 18:47

I find anything but white off putting. My mum has these horrible grey speckled plates that look like they've been spun around while the paint was wet. Yack. Allegedly expensive though..

AgathaVanHelsing · 11/01/2020 18:47

Life is too short for boring crockery

DickDewy · 11/01/2020 18:47

I agree. White and round. Ditto napkins.

Also bed linen, towels and toilet tissue.

BadMoon · 11/01/2020 18:49

When I was growing up we had earthenware pottery - very 70s (even though it was the 80s). Since then I have always gone for white, but I am now becoming obsessed with blue and white crockery and have a plan to start collecting it - mismatched. I particularly love the blue and white patterns by the Burleigh Pottery.

Ceramique · 11/01/2020 18:53

I'm a potter, I have a zillion cups, mugs, bowls, teapots and casserole dishes, all in beautiful home mage dark glazes, I love making them and they look amazing in my little kitchen. All my plates however are round, white and from ikea.

Spanglybangles · 11/01/2020 18:53

Plates: White and Round.
Pass given for gold edging

Agree 100% that square crockery is #TOWIE

Also: Clear glasses - never tinted
and most importantly of all: Bone China mugs with white inner. Don't care about the outside - go mad as you like, but WHITE INNER.

youkiddingme · 11/01/2020 18:56

I have some plain white ones. And a whole assortment of others. I love to buy individual plates, bowls, jugs, mugs and use whatever I fancy for different foods and moods. But yeah the plain white ones usually come out for guests. My favourite personal one is orange.

PearTreeParty · 11/01/2020 18:57

@MaMaMaMySharona - are those the Habitat Olmo plates? They are pretty but I could NEVER.

Plugitinthen · 11/01/2020 19:00

@Spanglybangles yes. Absolutely

Does gravy look good on a mid blue plate, then?

I voted YANBU because I think food looks most appealing on a white plate, even if it has a pattern or colour round the rim.

However I think YABVU to have a pop at the poster who shared her pic of a roast dinner on glass Pyrex plates.

She was at the time a young Mum in a difficult relationship with no family support and had never eaten or cooked a roast dinner at home. She was trying to learn to cook and giver her kids meals with fresh veg. MN talked her through making a Sunday roast in real time and she proudly posted the results on her only plates: Pyrex glass.

So pretty snobby to sneer at them.

LemonPrism · 11/01/2020 19:01

Mine are blue, grey and white

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 11/01/2020 19:01

Ooh @MaMaMaMySharona I’ve been longingly eyeing those up for months but can’t justify the expense when I’m on maternity. They are lovely though!

I always think plain white crockery looks a bit cheap and studenty.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 11/01/2020 19:01

Plates are white and round. They can be from different stores as long as they adhere to those rules.

Serving dishes can be white too, but if you are serving Moroccan , Indian or Chinese food, they can be brightly coloured.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 11/01/2020 19:02

I have the Denby Azure range - white plate but with a blue rim and underside. They are my favourites because they are just so durable, they have been dropped or fallen off the side so many times and they still carry on undamaged. They can be easily replaced too because they are stocked in all the outlet stores and Debenhams. Do they count as white?

LaurieMarlow · 11/01/2020 19:02

God how boring.

Plugitinthen · 11/01/2020 19:03

Agree with all other posters re: bedding/towels/napkins/dinner service all should be white. You are my people

Re serving bowls and platters - go crazy, mix it up

Fucking hell, there are rules for everything on here

OkMaybeNot · 11/01/2020 19:04

The snob in me agrees with you, but my heart longs for rainbow stripes.
