To think this is selfish and unfair behaviour?

Freezing cold day, rainy and windy, and two guys are standing IN the bus shelter smoking.. Which means I have to stand outside because I have a bad cold/chest and don't want to breathe it in.. I can't stand the smell, it's repulsive.. I don't want to end up smelling of smoke, which is what happens.

AIBU to think it is selfish and unfair behaviour on their part?

OP posts:

Retro both my parents are immune compromised. Both are having chemo. Mum still works PT and dad is retired. Dad goes to the gym and supermarket, mum does bingo, and both go to pub quiz and anywhere else they want. Everyday virus' are on every surface in the world and cannot be avoided.

Cigarette smoke is not so,etching that exists in biology. It's something that exists due to someone's choice to smoke.

And I'm an ex smoker!

YouTheCat · 11/01/2020 17:01

If I took one day off for a cold, I'd be in bother at work.

OP, as a smoker, those people at the bus stop were inconsiderate arses. On the very rare occasions I smoke outdoors, I do it as far away from people as I can.

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 17:03

@WorraLiberty
"Oh dear God. Still not reading the thread are you? grin"

Surely even you can see the irony in your comment? 😂😂🤣

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2020 17:06

There is no irony in my comment Retro. If you read the thread you'd know that...

I'll put you out of your misery shall I?

The OP said she's had a cold since the beginning of December.

She then went on to say Neither do most women. Who still have to work. Cook. Arrange Christmas. Childrens birthdays. Etc etc.

You piped up with BeTheRabbit if you're organising Christmas this early I'm honestly impressed! I've got birthdays in less than a week that I haven't organised yet...But I'm guessing you just added that for a list...

Or are you going to try to convince us all she wasn't actually talking about the Christmas just gone?

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 17:09

@itsgettingweird at no point have I said that everyday viruses aren't on surfaces and can't be avoided?

I've said that I think it's hypocritical for @BeTheRabbit to complain that the smokers were being selfish and unfair, whilst knowingly going into an enclosed space with a contagious disease, as people who are immunocompromised may think the same thing about her... Hmm

amatsip · 11/01/2020 17:13

Op they should have been considerate.

Retro, with your situation you shouldn't put yourself in situations where you could be compromised, you need to take responsibility for your own health, you can't expect others too.

It's cold and flu season it is to be expected that you will come across people with either on a daily basis, life can't stop and you can't expect the outside world to be a sterile bubble incase you wander out.

I'm saying this as someone immunosuppressed myself.

Afternoon, all.
We've had a couple of reports about this thread, and can see it's gone way off the tracks. Can we appeal to everyone's better natures here and ask you all to post with a bit of love and understanding?
Thank you kindly,
MNHQ

I agree with that statement (SHOOT ME!).

It's just that I think going out in public whilst infectious, although selfish, is more or less unavoidable. Smoking in other people's faces doesn't have to happen.

It is very inconsiderate, but only illegal if the bus shelter has more than 1 wall.

And to those who say the Op shouldn't go out with a cold, that would mean most of the population being out of action for extended periods! Smoking is a choice, having a cold isn't.

Butchyrestingface · 11/01/2020 17:40

Gosh, did someone chuck a wobbly?

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 17:45

@SchadenfreudePersonified I'm not self obsessed, nor a wanker, and I'm aware that the world does not revolve around me not sure why you felt the need to presume otherwise. I'm entitled to my opinion. Hmm

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/01/2020 17:45

Oh, blimey!

I've missed all the excitement . . .

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 17:46

@Butchyrestingface no idea, apparently referencing prior comments isn't allowed? Confused

Mlou32 · 11/01/2020 17:49

@retroflex I am sorry to hear you have a health condition however this doesn't mean that the thousands of people up and down the country should have to stay in solitary confinement in their homes every time they have a sniffle just in case they come into contact with an immunocompromised individual. It is completely unreasonable to expect that. Fair enough if someone had the flu and was coughing and spluttering all over the bus, that would be rude and inconsiderate however a cold...? Nope. There is being considerate of others and there is absolute ridiculousness. Expecting people to not leave the house and use any public amenities is bordering on the latter.

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 17:53

@mlou32 what part of your comment is answering the original post? Or are you just looking to join in with those who are picking parts of my comments they don't like and jumping on? Hmm

Topseyt · 11/01/2020 17:55

The smokers were being unreasonable. The OP wasn't.

As for going out and about with colds, people do just have to. Thankfully I don't get many colds, but when I do they usually go straight onto my chest and I do have to visit my GP to get it checked out. It has progressed to bronchitis and pneumonia before, with attendant rib fractures (agonising). I am not immunocompromised either. I don't expect everyone who might have a cold to stay at home to protect me. Nor do I stay at home unless things get severe, otherwise I would never get to work. Especially at this time of year.

Stop digging, Retro. You can't expect everyone who might just have a cold to just stay at home all the time. It is also possible to carry some cold and flu viruses and be completely asymptomatic, so you wouldn't know you were carrying it. How does that fit with your agenda?

Perhaps we should all just stay at home and never go anywhere, never earn a living and live in a bubble.

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 17:58

The op hasn't described it as a sniffle, it's been described as a bad cold since December. Although they've had their flu jag, this would only mean that any flu they came into contact with was less severe, perhaps thought of as a bad cold, she actually said bad cold/chest which does indeed suggest "coughing and spluttering all over the bus" to me...

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 17:59

@Topseyt RTFT

WarmSausageTea · 11/01/2020 18:00

Maybe the people who wear a face/surgical mask out and about have got the right idea.

The smokers were BU, but the OP knew that anyway.

@Topseyt clearly you've not read it properly. There is a difference between not knowing, and knowingly which has already been covered. Please troll elsewhere. I have no agenda.
