To think this is selfish and unfair behaviour?

Freezing cold day, rainy and windy, and two guys are standing IN the bus shelter smoking.. Which means I have to stand outside because I have a bad cold/chest and don't want to breathe it in.. I can't stand the smell, it's repulsive.. I don't want to end up smelling of smoke, which is what happens.

AIBU to think it is selfish and unfair behaviour on their part?

YANBU - I'm a smoker and would never smoke in a bus shelter, it's shitty entitled behaviour.

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/01/2020 16:13

Retro flex- the argument would be in your favour if the OP had the flu but had not had the flu vaccine because then she’d be one of those contagious disease carrying anti-vaxxers putting the immune compromised at risk.

But since it’s just a “bad cold”, no one cares about the immune compromised. It’s ok to risk their lives.

Funny old world isn’t it?

Kirstymonkey3 · 11/01/2020 16:16

@retroflex many people are contagious before they display symptoms so would be out and about with no idea. I think as pp has said, it is the time of year for lots of bugs so if immune-compromised, you should be taking the necessary precautions to protect yourself.

RamonaFlower · 11/01/2020 16:16

This is one of those threads you can only find on MN. Starts off about smoking and descends into an argument about people going out of the house with a cold.

Can't believe this website is still free.

BrokenWing · 11/01/2020 16:16

it is illegal and selfish to smoke in that style of bus shelter in scotland, although understandable you didn't want to challenge them

it is about time they just banned smoking in any public places.

and you are absolutely ok to go about your day to day business with a cold.

Seriously? People should stay at home and not mingle with any members of the public when unwell in case they encounter someone immunosupressed? That’s utterly unreasonable. I am very sorry for immunosupressed people, but come on! You might not even know you’re contagious!

Apolloanddaphne · 11/01/2020 16:18

@Retroflex. I get that you have your own health issues but you are being ridiculous to suggest people with colds, bad or otherwise, stay indoors and not venture out.

People who smoke have a choice about where and when they smoke. People with colds have to go about their business on a day to day basis.

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2020 16:19

Blimey Retroflex. Given that the world is, and always will be inhabited by sick people who have no choice but to come into contact with other people, you're really angry aren't you?

Do you take your anger out on everyone in life, or have you reserved it all to unleash on the OP?

BeTheRabbit · 11/01/2020 16:19

Actually, I have had the flu vaccine.

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 16:20

@Kirstymonkey3 I do take all the precautions I can to protect myself, which if you had rtft you'd already know. But please tell me how I can protect myself from selfish people going into enclosed places such as busses knowing they're contagious? Oh I can't, so thanks for arranging with me that it's wrong for her to do so...

Queenoftheashes · 11/01/2020 16:21

They are shitheads but prob no point saying anything. I had words with a guy smoking on a train platform and he followed me on the train and harassed me for 15 mins then stole my phone. Fucking twats.

Pinkginhelps · 11/01/2020 16:21

Stand very close and cough and splutter ALL OVER them

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 16:23

@Upso you're free to join a thread whenever you like, but to join and only comment on something "else" as opposed to the original thread is a bit immature. Don't you have a view on the original topic? And you've got the cheek to imply I'm embarrassing myself... Grin

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2020 16:24

But since it’s just a “bad cold”, no one cares about the immune compromised. It’s ok to risk their lives.

For goodness sake Hmm

People have to go about their normal lives with colds sometimes.

For example, if you have kids you need to take to school on the bus, are you supposed to keep them off because you have a cold?

If just one of those kids has a cold, are they all supposed to stay off school or the sick one get left home alone?

Life just doesn't work like that I'm afraid.

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 16:24

@Cherrysoup but she does know she's contagious? So your point is invalid...

RightEarlobeBreath · 11/01/2020 16:25

You made a choice to travel on public transport knowing that you have a contagious disease.

I suppose you could also argue that you made a choice to travel on public transport knowing that you are at a higher risk of catching something contagious from people who are knowingly (and more often unknowingly) contagious at the time. Even if OP stayed at home, the bus will be full of germs anyway from people who don’t know they are contagious, cross contamination from contact with contagious people outside of the bus etc.

MockneyReject · 11/01/2020 16:26

YANBU, op.
Retroflex, on the other hand...

Mitzicoco · 11/01/2020 16:29

Retroflex this is about the OP, not you.

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 16:30

@SchadenfreudePersonified you can "root" for whoever you want, to me it's not a "dual" as you seem to think it is.

I could agree with @worraLiberty but then we'd both be wrong, so I have nothing further to say to them.

In all of your examples, the "sick" people are in the incubation period, and are unaware of their illnesses, so yet another person who is skipping over the facts to suit their rhetoric... Hmm

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2020 16:31

Cherrysoup but she does know she's contagious? So your point is invalid...

Since the beginning of December, so Cherry's point is not invalid at all. It's ridiculous to expect the OP not to mingle with the public when she has to.

Retroflex · 11/01/2020 16:32

@RightEarlobeBreath "I suppose you could also argue that you made a choice to travel on public transport knowing that you are at a higher risk of catching something contagious from people who are knowingly (and more often unknowingly) contagious at the time."

Please show me where I said I was on the bus in any situation?

It's great, isn't it Ramona?
