To ask, if you had £40 to spend on yourself, what would you spend it on?

Hi everyone. So I have £40 left from my Christmas gift money! With the rest I got new cushions, curtains and some other house bits Hmm which is always the case tbh. Now I’m wondering what I should do with the last £40! Part of me wants clothes as I only get clothes twice a year - with Christmas money or birthday money, other than that I do love a good charity shop bargain BUT then other parts of me think about getting one or 2 more expensive items of clothing rather than cheaper bits at primark, or the really naughty part of me wants to just spend it on a massage as I’ve never had one and think it would be lovely to have a bit of relaxation time! Thoughts? Thanks 😊 (I don’t know if it matters but I’m 29 with 2 kids and don’t drink so won’t be having a night out with it or a bottle of gin lol)

My OH got me a surprise Christmas present of a massage, facial and eye treatment. It was for our nearest Hulton hotel spa and it cost him£40 through Groupon. It should have been £90. 100% get the massage but look for a deal to get the most for your money

What about a college day course? Ours does Saturday courses on random topics such as flower arranging, origami, how to ice a simnel cake, jewellery making, beginners IT, learn about your sewing machine etc.

BentNeckLady · 10/01/2020 18:10

Plants. Always plants ❤️

Ninkanink · 10/01/2020 18:13

Oh a watch is a great idea! My favourite watch for daily wear is a Skagen watch with leather strap which I got vastly reduced a few years ago. I’d love another! £40 probably isn’t quite enough but I’d save it and put it towards one in the sales later in the year.

insideoutsider · 10/01/2020 18:33

If I got a £40 gift card (so I couldn't 'save' it), I'd buy a new pair of head phones - the type the cool kids wear 😀

LakieLady · 10/01/2020 18:36

Don't waste it on books - libraries are free!

You must live somewhere that libraries stay open after 5pm and still have money to buy books @Sydneyy!

I tried to reserve something from the Booker long list when it was announced. I was about 53rd on the list and they only had 2 copies in the whole county. It'd have been in paperback by the time I got to the top of the list, so I bought it.

MissMoogle · 10/01/2020 18:36

Havent read the full thread, but given that I'm on a learning to knit and crochet properly, I'd probably end up spending it on supplies and yarn.

RhythimIsRhythim · 10/01/2020 18:37

Massage is a good idea. There are often deals in January.

BubblesBuddy · 10/01/2020 18:38

Favourite things for £40: 2 x lipsticks or any make up, perfume from allbeauty so the price is competitive, new bra, hair cut (need a bit more £££ but nearly there), Belkin phone battery booster, National Art pass or museum membership, NT membership, books, Liz Earl hot cloth cleanser, nail bar appointment: I’ve no shortage of treat ideas for me.

Two cheap flights might well be possible but that’s just the start of the expenditure!

TeaAndBisquits · 10/01/2020 18:40

I'd get a pedicure done and spend the rest on a lipstick I've been eyeing up for a while :)

bitheby · 10/01/2020 19:02

My immediate response was a massage before I read your post. Get a recommendation though as the quality varies wildly.

ChiaraRimini · 10/01/2020 19:32

Bit random but if you are larger of boob OP, I'd go to Bravissimo and get fitted for a nice new bra.
It's probably the one thing that has made the most improvement to my appearance. Look for "bra intervention" threads on MN Style and Beauty.
If money left then get your eyebrows done professionally (2nd biggest improvement) once they are shaped well you can maintain them yourself.

I have decided to give myself until Monday, it’s my next day off and my first day off in a long while where I have no commitments. So by Monday hopefully I will have made the decision either to drive to a certain place and buy what I want or order online! In the meantime I’m going to research a few of the suggestions on here, such as massages or any potential books that I would usually enjoy and could make a promise to find the time to read again! A watch is also a pretty good shout, I do need one as I can’t have my phone at work and I never know the time haha

A Chanel lipstick!

whiteroseredrose · 10/01/2020 20:52

I'd spend £40 on a one-off house clean.

Disclaimer that was actually my Christmas present from my mum.

It was lovely having the weekend to potter instead.

MitziK · 10/01/2020 21:07

Just spent exactly that on a heavily discounted pair of trainers.

The next £40 is being spent on an Osteopath.

After that, the other things I would think of that are blatantly for me and not anybody else would be;

Pedicure (or Podiatrist appointment).
Set of gels.
A facial with massage.
Eyelash extensions (just so I can see what they're like).

Bollocks to spending it on beautifying the dog. He'll only go and roll in fox shit on the way home.

Halloweenbabyy · 10/01/2020 21:10

Ima spend thrift and buy anything I want 😬 so I’d buy anything 🤣

Kalifa · 10/01/2020 21:14

Manicure+pedicure

Purpletigers · 10/01/2020 21:43

Books , plants or plant pots , Emma Bridgewater pottery ( they have an amazing sale on at the moment and free delivery if you spend £40 . You could get a beautiful teapot and two mugs for £40 . Also if you’re a new customer I can give you a link for a free mug worth £20 . You could use them every day and treat yourself to lovely loose quality tea occasionally.

8feet12paws2fins · 10/01/2020 22:00

Some of your suggestions leave me feeling so lame lol the things you all enjoy sound so lovely and I wonder why I don’t have anything that I can claim! So whilst doing some online research, I came across something about this alcohol free toner that was supposedly great for sensitive skin and I thought about maybe buying some nice things to start a skincare routine as I don’t currently have one at all - I use miscellar water to remove my make up but that is as far as it goes! Would I continue a skincare routine though?

Ooooh talking of jeans- Freddy jeans are AMAZING. Especially the high waisted ones. They suck your stomach in, whilst hoisting up your butt cheeks- gives you an amazing silhouette and they're super comfy too

AmazingGreats · 10/01/2020 22:02

Right now with £40 to spend on myself I would get a hair cut, a massage or a well fitting pair of jeans.

doadeer · 10/01/2020 22:03

I'm great at spending money on myself 😂 I'd buy some books, makeup, bath products I really like

Or you could spend it on an experience? A massage or afternoon tea or visit somewhere you've never been?

RainbowMum11 · 10/01/2020 22:07

I was going to say Gin until I read your last sentence!!

A massage def - especially as you haven't had one before & want one! And the rest of your £ has been spent on house stuff.

Minxmumma · 10/01/2020 22:10

Me, I'd feed my naughty habit and buy more wool for crochet. I simply can't resist and guilt free would be a bonus!
