To ask, if you had £40 to spend on yourself, what would you spend it on?

Hi everyone. So I have £40 left from my Christmas gift money! With the rest I got new cushions, curtains and some other house bits Hmm which is always the case tbh. Now I’m wondering what I should do with the last £40! Part of me wants clothes as I only get clothes twice a year - with Christmas money or birthday money, other than that I do love a good charity shop bargain BUT then other parts of me think about getting one or 2 more expensive items of clothing rather than cheaper bits at primark, or the really naughty part of me wants to just spend it on a massage as I’ve never had one and think it would be lovely to have a bit of relaxation time! Thoughts? Thanks 😊 (I don’t know if it matters but I’m 29 with 2 kids and don’t drink so won’t be having a night out with it or a bottle of gin lol)

@8feet12paws2fins
It is amazing! I love having my hair played with like when my dds do plaits in it (I even used to like the nit nurse when I was little!)
Also they do all over your face, back of neck and shoulders, you are lying down but clothed, they just push shoulder straps down, room was dim with indian music plinky plonking away! It was lush! Only thing is that use quite a bit of essential oil so your face & hair line is a bit greasy after!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/01/2020 10:52

A hairdryer would be useful AND bring you joy each time you use it,win win!

If you can stretch to another tenner then a Parlux will make you giddy as it dries so quickly.

If not then ETIs have very good reviewsSmile

Take the money for the house stuff back from the 'house' account and use it to buy decent clothes for you if that's what you need/want

I think if the OP had a ‘house’ account she’d probably have bought her house stuff from there. It’s pretty clear from the OP’s posts that they don’t have much spare cash and that’s why she used her Christmas money to buy household items. And that’s also why she doesn’t often buy new clothes, I’m guessing.
OP I personally would put it towards the Dyson airwrap, because I really want one but am struggling to justify paying £450 to put waves in my hair! But if I were you I’d get a good back massage!

yogo · 10/01/2020 10:55

If you've got a college near you they often look for models for massage etc. Minimal charge of about £5 and they are usually really thorough.

Fr0g · 10/01/2020 10:58

Make the most of the sales to treat yourself to good quality clothes or shoes.
From your post, I spend more on clothes than you do, but I am ridiculously pleased with some new boots from Clarks that I paid £32 for in the sale, originally £130.

IncrediblySadToo · 10/01/2020 11:01

@notacooldad 🤣I’ve always thought you were a Dad!

I’m amazed at how far some of you could make £40 go! Maybe I’m bad at finding good deals or maybe that’s life in the SE!?

@8feet12paws2fins that’s lots of people & pets! No wonder you don’t have much money left over. I like buying stuff for the house, but I’ve got 20 years in you! You’re only 29! Maybe take the pressure off yourself to spend/enjoy it and put the money aside until you find something you really want or something you really want to do.

Personally I LOVE stationery - not ridiculously expensive stuff as it’s not my style but I love a new notebook/muji gel pens or good quality pencils and pretty post it notes etc I also love merino/alpaca type wool.

Would you fancy an organised day trip on a coach (it’s not all pensioners going to keep gardens, there are some fun ones!) or a day out taking the train somewhere you haven’t been before?

It’s difficult because lots of the suggestions people have made would be my idea if torture not a treat and I expect many would think my ‘treats’ would be very boring! 🤣

You need to look after your MH though, so this money aside make sure you find time to find yourself! And what YOU like, what brings YOU joy (other than DH, your kids & your pets!)

Oh just had a thought. You could buy some yarn & crochet yourself a cosy blanket. Crochet is very therapeutic (easy to learn from you tube if you don’t know how) and a cosy blanket is always nice!

namechangenumber2 · 10/01/2020 11:01

I'd buy myself something that I use regularly, but a treat version of. So posh bubble bath, a make up pallette, new scarf, fancy hand cream. All things I can't justify treating myself to, so normally go for the bog standard versions!

Bunnylady54 · 10/01/2020 11:03

I live in Cornwall so not sure if I could get such cheap flights from Newquay airport. Will definitely look into it as we don’t have the money for a “ full length” holiday but could consider a long weekend away somewhere child friendly.
If I had £40, I would go to a local hotel where they offer swim/sauna/ jacuzzi/steam room & lunch for £13.50. The rest I would spend on a pedicure which included a foot massage as I absolutely love that.

Oldishusernewname · 10/01/2020 11:09

If you're anywhere near Hull, I believe there is a guy called Brian who does special massages.

Yoni live once Grin

Seriously though, spend every penny on something that makes you happy

FishCanFly · 10/01/2020 11:10

Maybe go see a theatre show.

notacooldad · 10/01/2020 11:10

notacooldad 🤣I’ve always thought you were a Dad!
🤣🤣
No the name comes from DS 2 having a tantrum because his dad wouldnt let him do something ( I cant remember what) that was dangerous and a a ridiculous idea. The ' insult' was 'well, you are not a cool dad are you!!' as he stormed off!!

Sorry to hijack op!!!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 10/01/2020 11:12

Pretty Matching bras and underwear

Fr0g · 10/01/2020 11:13

@Elbeagle - I am so with you on the airwrap!
I did narrow it down to a "smooth & control" rather than the complete version, so a bit less, but still £400,

Elbeagle · 10/01/2020 11:13

Fr0g I want one so much!

Ironfloor269 · 10/01/2020 11:16

I'd spend it on getting a person stylist to do an analysis for myself - so that would form the basis of all my future shopping, dressing and styling myself. I think you can get one done for about £30.

notacooldad · 10/01/2020 11:19

Groupon and Wowcher are great for massages, haircuts, spa days, afternoon teas etc, even in the SE. When I go to different parts of the county I always go on to the local site for eating out in that area for good deals.

SouthwarkSkaters · 10/01/2020 11:33

I had a £50 John Lewis voucher for my birthday and spent around £40 of that buying a sewing machine bag and a sewing box Blush #notacoolmum Grin - they were in the sale and I know they would get used and they’re pretty.

My other options were fancy pyjamas or stationery. JL did have some really nice knitwear around the £40-£50 mark too (but I decided I don’t need clothes).

Butterfly02 · 10/01/2020 11:41

What about a Groupon spa day to include a massage could then use steam rooms, pool etc too sounds like it would do you good.

Trewser · 10/01/2020 11:42

A big bottle of dupe Jo Malone Pomegranate
A dark green beanie
Eyebrows done.

nornironrock · 10/01/2020 11:44

Records, or a magazine subscription.

Or a fairly decent bottle of rum.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 10/01/2020 11:45

I would go out for the day with my partner...a city not too far away or a town you've not visited before...use the day to visit all the little side streets and quaint shops...the £40 should get you there in petrol with enough left for a lovely lunch somewhere.

AmethystMoonShine · 10/01/2020 11:48

Go for the massage! Your mental health & well-being is so important. Enjoy every minute of it. My top trick is book it as near to the end of the day as possible and reap the sleep inducing benefits.
I once had a massage at 4pm, home by 5.30pm, thought I’ll just lie down for a minute or two..... next things it’s 9am the next day Grin

theoriginalmadambee · 10/01/2020 11:51

OP, sorry to butt in, but sometimes Aldi has some not very expensive hairdryers (12-15£), bought long haired dd one and it's great Smile.
