To ask, if you had £40 to spend on yourself, what would you spend it on?

Hi everyone. So I have £40 left from my Christmas gift money! With the rest I got new cushions, curtains and some other house bits Hmm which is always the case tbh. Now I’m wondering what I should do with the last £40! Part of me wants clothes as I only get clothes twice a year - with Christmas money or birthday money, other than that I do love a good charity shop bargain BUT then other parts of me think about getting one or 2 more expensive items of clothing rather than cheaper bits at primark, or the really naughty part of me wants to just spend it on a massage as I’ve never had one and think it would be lovely to have a bit of relaxation time! Thoughts? Thanks 😊 (I don’t know if it matters but I’m 29 with 2 kids and don’t drink so won’t be having a night out with it or a bottle of gin lol)

Op I officially ban you from spending any of that money on anyone but yourself. In its entirety. I popped into the House of Commons and passed it into law so it would actually be illegal!

I would buy the penguin book of Japanese short stories, fleabag series 2 on DVD and chocolate from hotel chocolat which was MINE! NO SHARING!

justcly · 10/01/2020 15:48

A manicure (I'm obsessed with my nails).

Soubriquet · 10/01/2020 15:51

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 10/01/2020 16:00

A tru diamond ring in the sale

Cryingoverspilttea · 10/01/2020 16:01

I'd spend a tenner on nice chocolates and the rest on new books :)

violetgrey · 10/01/2020 16:06

@8feet12paws2fins if you end up buying the bath oil, use it sparingly. It’s super concentrated so you need only a small amount.
I don’t now what’s your style but check out the Oliver Bonas sale. They have some lovely tops and jumpers in £20-£30 price range.

minesagin37 · 10/01/2020 16:15

Two bottles of Molten Brown shower gel.

FesteredFairy · 10/01/2020 16:28

I would buy a bottle of really good gin.

thickwoollytights · 10/01/2020 16:36

Nails! A French manicure or shellac?

avocuddl · 10/01/2020 16:38

@violetgrey the bath salts or the foaming bath? Can't see the bath oil!

violetgrey · 10/01/2020 16:42

@ avocuddl, sorry foaming bath but it’s more like a foaming bath oil. I have the salts as well but prefer the liquid.

AmbitiouslyFit · 10/01/2020 16:46

Save it towards a nice trip to the hair salon. Probably dip dye or highlights.

If I don’t know what to spend it on, I would put it in my pot account which I keep to save up for a dream thing I want to do for myself when it arises.

Like buying lumea recently. With saved up bits and bobs.

notsodimwit · 10/01/2020 16:49

How exciting Smile 40 pound is a lot of money for me to spend on myself xx if I had to spend it on myself only I would buy some sketcher shoes so my feet will feel better than they do at the moment xx

8feet12paws2fins · 10/01/2020 16:50

I can guarantee if I don’t spend it soon then it will inevitably go towards a bill or a dog groom or something, whilst they are valid and important things, I just want to this once feel like I’ve really treated myself Smile

I'd get gel nails done and too faced new shake your palm palms eye shadow palette

IncrediblySadToo · 10/01/2020 16:55

@Sydneyy

Don't waste it on books

😳

I’d NEVER consider money spent on books ‘wasted’

libraries are free!

The fines aren’t and they end up costing me more than just buying the book! It’s massively inconvenient and the the books Nearly always smell weird and feel dirty. I LOVE having a brand new book. I do buy them from charity shops or car boots etc if they’re still in a decent condition.

@8feet12paws2fins

Crochet - try the Bella Coco tutorials and look at some others. Some of them explain things/show things SO much better than others. It’s a world away from trying to learn from a book or a ‘real person’ - that was an epic fail for me 🤣

All the humans & pets might not be a huge number, but it’s a lot of responsibility for others from 18! Not much time for ‘finding yourself’. Still you’ll have a lot more feeedom than many when you’re still young when your kids are older! 😊but in the meantime you need to find ‘some’ time & space for yourself! 🌷

I know what you mean about relaxing enough to enjoy reading when you’ve got stuff that needs doing & kids to collect etc. What I found hells a bit is to read somewhere that there aren’t a ton of jobs niggling at me (cosy cafe or pub works well - or even a room in the house that’s uncluttered and isn’t housing jobs that need doing!) and set an alarm and tell myself I don’t have to worry about anything at all until the alarm goes off! I will NOT be late for the kids because I’ve set the alarm!! If you have a car and collect the kids by car I find it more relaxing to drive where I need to be to collect them- then read in the car. It doesn’t work do well when you have a younger one wanting your attention though 🙄.

@notacooldad - 🤣. damn annoying Dad wanting to keep him safe/alive 🤣

No one I know IRL has had a great time with Groupon. The ‘events’ have all gone pear shaped one way or another. Might brave up to trying again. I ordered a couple of things off of Wowcher - and so far, touch wood they’ve worked out ok.

violetgrey · 10/01/2020 17:15

@IncrediblySadToo I agree! Buying a new book is never a waste. I re-read many of my books and like it that I can just pick them off my shelves when I fancy a particular book. I buy brand new, charity shop books and use my local library too.
@8feet12paws2fins you should absolutely treat yourself now and not be too sensible with it.😊 A few years ago a lovely woman I worked her gave me some cash for Christmas and insisted that I had to spend it frivolously. I didn’t have much money then but I promised her so I had to spend it on fripperies.😀 I bought some books and lipstick and got so much joy out of them. It was one of the best gifts I’ve been given.

PhantomErik · 10/01/2020 17:44

I have a similar dilema but with £75!

Not into handbags, makeup, nails etc I have a kindle paperwhite which I love so may use £10-20 on ebooks.

I like charity shops & rarely buy new. However I bought a new pair of boots (Heavenly feet £55) a few months ago that are so comfortable I may consider another pair in a different colour.

Thought about a new bra but dh convinced me that it was a necessity & should come out of normal household budget lol.

I could spend it on the dc in a matter of minutes!

It's a nice problem to have though Grin

Lipperfromchipper · 10/01/2020 17:49

I Spent about that on my shampoo/conditioner and body wash yesterday! I love the Aveda hair products !!

namechangetheworld · 10/01/2020 17:50

Ooh I'm jealous. £40 is a lot. I'm the same as you OP, I always end up spending birthday money on things for the house or children. I've started hinting that I would prefer vouchers for clothes shops to make sure I spend it on myself in the future.
Anyway, I'd probably get a nice new pair of boots for Spring. Enjoy!

Ninkanink · 10/01/2020 17:51

@PhantomErik £75 would get you a very good pair of boots if you look now in the sales...

Queenest · 10/01/2020 17:55

Silk pyjamas

WellTidy · 10/01/2020 18:03

What about a new watch? I have a lovely stainless steel ladies accurist that cost £40 or so. You’d certainly get to use it a lot

A new wallet or purse? Ditto
