AIBU to think there’s no justification for eating meat and dairy any more?

People are educated now. People know that eating meat and dairy is disastrous for the planet. People know it’s causing an unprecedented climate crisis. People know it causes untold cruelty to animals.

So why are people still doing it? There is a vegan substitute for virtually every meat and dairy product you can think of. What is going on here?

The number of people I’ve seen on social media breaking their hearts over Australia shooting wild camels and horses because they drink too much water while still eating beef blows my mind.

Yes YES Lifecraft!

It's so annoying. Idiots banging on about caring about the planet, when they actually only care about human habitation of the planet. If they cared about the planet, they would want humans to die out, as it's only us that's harming the planet. Cockroaches and wasps are doing the planet no harm at all.

Anotherdayanothernight · 09/01/2020 21:38

People know that having children is bad for the environment as well

Windyone · 09/01/2020 21:38

Good point @MaxNormal where I live the deer are culled. Numbers are still growing but the problem with deer is that they are very destructive. They destroy the countryside and the species that live there. Good luck trying to grow crops with an out of control deer population

drspouse · 09/01/2020 21:38

I tried a month of a plant based diet and got a very bad stomach.
So that's not happening.

Number64 · 09/01/2020 21:38

People are resistant to change. Imagine, being vegan in the 90s marked you out as a real weirdo. Now the biggest music artist in the world is vegan, there’s 4 types of milk alternative in my local coop, meat alternatives for everything, and vegan sausage rolls on every high street. Give it another 20 years and attitudes will have evolved further.

I’m not a vegan myself btw but I do agree with you. Went vegetarian last year and will go vegan at some point. If I’m honest, I felt years ago, as a meat eater, that it was the only really ethically sound position but anticipated it becoming easier to do a few years down the line, which it has. My reasons then were basically that I enjoyed eating meat and it’s very socially acceptable to do so, so there was no external pressure to make a change. It’s easy to keep doing what you’re doing and there is a strong emotional/cultural aspect to food.

stuffedpeppers · 09/01/2020 21:38

Because I don't want to and it is my choice

If I want to eat my BLT on full fat gluten loaded bread I can.

Equally the other day I ate falafel on a gluten free pitta.

I had a choice and I exercised my right to choose

GabsAlot · 09/01/2020 21:39

Because i like it-i have nothing against vegans/vgetarians but dont tell me what to do please

NoSquirrels · 09/01/2020 21:39

There's a shit load of reform needed to completely change the low standards of animal welfare allowed in food production, and I wish some uneducated moronic vegans would stop distracting from that with their bullshit.

^^ This. What TrainspottingWelsh said - all of it.

MaxNormal · 09/01/2020 21:39

I don't have a guilty conscience or feel bad, btw. Don't assume other people's feelings just because that is how eating meat made you feel.

eminencegrise · 09/01/2020 21:39

I had to cut loose an annoying vegan mate. Got so sick of the pontificating. Not interested, move along, I have a long-haul flight to catch.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 09/01/2020 21:39

We don't have to justify it. We eat it because we want to, we like it and guess, what? The more vegans preach, the more steak and Stilton I want to eat 😂

ChilliandLemon · 09/01/2020 21:39

Cutting down on avocados for EVERYONE would make a big environmental impact globally.

Not just meat eaters - everyone is at fault there

Not me. Hate the things.

jelly79 · 09/01/2020 21:39

Preference, taste, choice.

AnnoyingVegan · 09/01/2020 21:40

How does it help the environment if eg we stop eating the locally produced high welfare meat, and fly in soya from across the globe?

This is so ignorant. 80% of all soya worldwide is grown to feed animals.

And what does high welfare meat mean to you? Don’t just trot it out as a trite, self-soothing phrase. What does it actually mean to you?

Pinkyyy · 09/01/2020 21:40

You make your own choices. Leave others to do the same.

MaxNormal · 09/01/2020 21:41

Why do you think you need to do anything to it at all?!

Are you for real? What do you expect crofters and farmers to do, fuck off and die? What do you expect people to then eat, things that are flown half-way across the world? I'd rather eat Scottish lamb thanks.

AnnoyingVegan · 09/01/2020 21:41

wish some uneducated moronic vegans would stop distracting from that with their bullshit.

I wish uneducated moronic carnitas would stop pretending to themselves that there’s a high-welfare way to kill baby animals.

finallyme2018 · 09/01/2020 21:41

Why do you think you have the right to tell someone else how to live? You want to go vegan good for you, but how presumptuous of you that you feel you have any right to tell others how to live, I spent a year learning and being taught about climate change and if you really feel not eating meat is going to be a enough to stop it then your deluded try getting countries like America who have back out of the agreement to lower emissions or other countries who emissions are still really high to cut down there emissions by recycling, finding alternative ways instead of the factories over there that release loads of carbon emissions into the atmosphere or how about start preaching about all the cars that are being put on the roads every year . But don't be so cocky as to think you have any right to preach how someone else eats to live!

Windyone · 09/01/2020 21:41

Some good points here from posters. Can you answer the points about fertilisers please? @AnnoyingVegan

Scarsthelot · 09/01/2020 21:41

I dont think theres any excuse to display cuntish behaviour.

But the OP shows that they still do.

I know plenty of vegans who have a terrible carbon footprint. Veganism won't save the planet.

Bets on yojmu arenr even a vegetarian.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 09/01/2020 21:41

People are literally going to die because of the climate crisis and you’re like ‘but cheese tastes good

Give me a cheeseboard and I'll die happy

Amaretto · 09/01/2020 21:41

Btw your user name is apt.

Your not going to convince anyone by going about how people are awful for to protect the planet. I suppose it’s a change from being murderers and killing babies.....
But you have to say that you’ve managed to get the back up of most people....

TigerOnATrain · 09/01/2020 21:41

@AnnoyingVegan

🥱

nowaypose · 09/01/2020 21:42

Cutting down on avocados for EVERYONE would make a big environmental impact globally.

But avocados taste so good and pretend avocados aren’t the same.

Sorry, just using the classic meat eater argument there. As you were.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 09/01/2020 21:42

Oh OP. Do fuck off.

  1. What should we do with the land only fit for grazing animals?
  2. Why can the wolves eat the sheep but we can't?
