AIBU to think there’s no justification for eating meat and dairy any more?

People are educated now. People know that eating meat and dairy is disastrous for the planet. People know it’s causing an unprecedented climate crisis. People know it causes untold cruelty to animals.

So why are people still doing it? There is a vegan substitute for virtually every meat and dairy product you can think of. What is going on here?

The number of people I’ve seen on social media breaking their hearts over Australia shooting wild camels and horses because they drink too much water while still eating beef blows my mind.

Their sugar content hit news today. Not impressed at all.

MsMD · 10/01/2020 11:24

At this point my justification is people like you. So please know that for breakfast I'm having store bought bacon, egg and sausage, for lunch I'm going to have a chicken and cheese sandwich with a glass of milk and for dinner I'm going to have a large steak dinner. All because of this thread.

Thanks.

Veganism is a pile of shite. Meat is there to be eaten, just like wild animals kill for their food.

I work in the farming industry and farmers effectively pay my wages.

In NI we have farm quality assurance so you know the meat you’re eating is from top quality farmers who care for their animals. If there was no beef, lamb or poultry farmers the whole worlds industry would turn to shit. Vegans..... fuck off would ya’s

differentnameforthis · 10/01/2020 11:36

Vegan is not low fodmap.

I tried a month of a plant based diet and got a very bad stomach. Could be because they are high in fodmaps, too many will mess up any gut.

CynthiaRothrock · 10/01/2020 11:36

Mycat, sorry I should apologise as I didn't necessarily mean you were shoving your opinion down people's throats, that was more aimed at the op.
Your points have been well rounded and I respect that.

JulietJanuary · 10/01/2020 11:38

Just to reiterate on current teens going vegan.

I went vegetarian tbh mostly vegan diet months after leaving my mother's traditional table where I'd had eggs, liver, red meat and veg day in day out. The vegan dishes I cooked were of the chickpea and root veg stew and rice variety, Vecon veggie stock in every batch!

If your kids are going from a largely processed food diet straight to vegan processed, please beware.

derxa · 10/01/2020 11:41

If we stopped farming sheep, we wouldn’t need to use the land they graze for anything. I'll sell my sheep farm to lovely land developers

NCforsafety · 10/01/2020 11:43

I love bacon. I love steak. I love chicken. I love lamb.
I vehemently dislike preachy vegans. Funny when I meet a vegan I know within about five seconds they are (because they preach about it constantly) but I've yet to meet a meat eater who feels the need to inform me of their diet.

MyCatIsATiger · 10/01/2020 11:49

Funny when I meet a vegan I know within about five seconds they are

I’ve had a somewhat different experience. I never volunteer the information that I’m vegan in real life. But then someone will offer me tea or something non-vegan to eat and I will politely say ‘no thank you’, or in a restaurant I will ask for something without the cheese, and then they will say ‘don’t you eat cheese?’ and I will say ‘no, I don’t eat dairy’ and they will say ‘are you a veeeeegan?’ and I will finally admit that I am, and then I get a whole load of defensive spiel about how they only buy ethical meat and dairy when I haven’t actually made any comment on their food choices.

(Ok this doesn’t happen every time, but it happens a lot).

The truth is, food is a hugely important part of the social fabric of this country. It is ever-present. That’s why you tend to learn quickly whether someone is a vegan or not. Not because they’re desperate to tell you, but because sooner rather than later you’ll be in a situation where food is involved, and their lifestyle will be revealed.

JulietJanuary · 10/01/2020 11:49

Skyejuly and bingo there in the comments is a guy saying it's a myth about b12 cuz a kid ate only crisps and was fine..

This is dangerous misinformation and its out there like flat earth beliefs.

BrieAndChilli · 10/01/2020 11:52

I think all round (because not 100% of people are going to go vegan, and i'm not convinced that if everyone was vegan we would be able to feed everyone properly) but i do think a more thoughtful diet is best - so cutting down on meat at every meal, and eating more locally and seasonally lessening the airmiles our food uses, as well as more organic food that doesnt fill the earth with chemicals. The sort of diet cavemen would have eaten - and yes that did include some meat but it was the result of seasonal hunts so meat would have been preserved and eeked out.
Unfortunately that sort of diet requires money and thought and time that most people dont have to spend. meat subsitutes are packed fulll of salt and other gump to make it taste 'right' I much prefer veggie food that is vegetables. i'm not veggie but 11 year old DD is so i often eat what she has, but still provide meat for DH and the boys.

LastTrainEast · 10/01/2020 11:53

@coatlessinspokane "the animals would be taken to sanctuaries and allowed to reproduce at a natural rate rather than forced to over breed"

Was this sarcasm?

The moment we make eating meat illegal any unsold food animals will be destroyed and the land ploughed for crops (or golf courses)

The only animals in the UK will be in pet shops. And any pet which requires meat would have to be put down. What meat would they eat?

BestBeforeYesterday · 10/01/2020 11:54

You’ve honestly read the OP’s contributions and don’t understand the response they’ve got?
The viciousness started right on page 1, and the OP's 1st post didn't warrant those kinds of replies.

Vegans are omnivores. All homo sapiens are omnivores. That's why we can live in all sorts of environments and thrive on all sorts of diets. Check how limited the ranges of our fellow great apes are by comparison
I don't understand the relevance of your reply to my post.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 10/01/2020 11:54

Good for you, you get all of the stars. Now bore off.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 10/01/2020 12:04

The viciousness started right on page 1, and the OP's 1st post didn't warrant those kinds of replies.

Oh please. The OP was looking for a reaction so she could go 'look at these awful people who don't eat the same way as me, woe is me that they are soooooooo mean'.

Reminds me of the 'fishing for compliments' types that tell me 'wow, you're so slim' expecting me to respond with 'oh but you look amazing'. Stopped playing their games decades ago.

LastTrainEast · 10/01/2020 12:04

@TwiddleMuff you think saying that cows would become extinct is "bonkers"?

@BobLobLawLLB you want us to "start by getting these poor victims out of these torture chambers?"

Do you both really imagine farmers will keep feeding and breeding them for free?

FeckOffGraham · 10/01/2020 12:05

The only animals in the UK will be in pet shops. And any pet which requires meat would have to be put down. What meat would they eat?

Actually, many (most?) 'proper' vegans are also against pet ownership.

Trewser · 10/01/2020 12:12

I think vegans imagine that when all the farm animals are gone, and all the pets, they will be happy and free, frolicking with the wolves. Rather than plugged permanently into the internet eating hydroponically grown pulses from the 'protein farms' covering the earth in plastic polytunnels.

ChristmasSweet · 10/01/2020 12:14

Because I want to. I like cheese, milk and yogurts thanks. Not going to stop for anyone.

MyCatIsATiger · 10/01/2020 12:15

Actually, many (most?) 'proper' vegans are also against pet ownership.

This is quite an extreme / unusual position. A fair number of vegans aren’t comfortable with owning pets which require to eat meat, but being opposed to pet ownership entirely is not common.

LakieLady · 10/01/2020 12:27

@Spudley13 Thank you for reinforcing my belief that The Archers is a educational programme! I had no idea that people thought we drink pus-filled or anit-biotic laden milk.

Your farm sounds great and it sounds as though you really care about your livestock.

FeckOffGraham · 10/01/2020 12:34

@MyCatIsATiger

Maybe things have changed since I was first vegan then. Back then most were very anti pet ownership, regardless of what the animals ate. It was seen as animal enslavement for our own selfish needs. Much like farming.

BlaueLagune · 10/01/2020 12:39

a kid ate only crisps and was fine

was that the kid who only ate crisps and ended up blind? Is that being fine? Idiots.
