AIBU to think there’s no justification for eating meat and dairy any more?

People are educated now. People know that eating meat and dairy is disastrous for the planet. People know it’s causing an unprecedented climate crisis. People know it causes untold cruelty to animals.

So why are people still doing it? There is a vegan substitute for virtually every meat and dairy product you can think of. What is going on here?

The number of people I’ve seen on social media breaking their hearts over Australia shooting wild camels and horses because they drink too much water while still eating beef blows my mind.

They aren't chopping down millions of acres of tropical rainforest so they can graze cows, are they?

No, they want the land to grow palm oil and aloe vera and bloody chia seeds.

I am more concerned with rainforest destruction causing the extinction of thousands of species of insects, plants and animals who rely on the rainforest habitat than I am about the dairy industry.

Trewser · 09/01/2020 22:40

If all you ate was vegetables then you'd be pretty unhealthy after some time, yes.

Sunsetsandmoons · 09/01/2020 22:40

Every time I google vegan recipes, the only meal that comes up is chick pea curry and I don’t like chick peas.

eminencegrise · 09/01/2020 22:40

I'm not afraid of death, my life has been a bit shit. I'm not interested in prolonging it through some form of misguided asceticism. No, thanks. I want to enjoy what time I have here.

BarcelonaFreddie · 09/01/2020 22:40

Bore off.

Chocarocker · 09/01/2020 22:41

Oh and much of the UK produced beef and lamb are fed mainly on grass, and then hay & fermented grass during the winter months and not soy. This may not be true for the rest of the world but many of the facts are not based on the UK.

Any form of agriculture FUCKS SOMETHING UP.

The answer is not to cut out anything. The answer is to NOT MASS PRODUCE.

People to eat local. Care about every fucking thing you put in your mouth.

midwest · 09/01/2020 22:42

I grew up in a farming community.
I'm quite happy raising animals, getting them killed and then butchering them.
I've visited slaughter houses.
I live an urban life now so I don't do this but I do try to buy ethical, locally raised organic meat and dairy.
Schemes like the Scottish veal one are excellent.
I'd prefer we focus on quality of the meat and dairy we eat rather than destroy amazon rainforest for soya.

LouLouLoupee · 09/01/2020 22:42

I’m on the waiting list for an allotment. It’s 100 years plus here! Maybe my grandchildren will get one.

You have privilege vast swathes of the population don’t. Campaign for change so everyone who wants an allotment can get one. Don’t name call, bully and goad people, it’s terribly unbecoming and shows you really haven’t a clue.

aroundtheworldyet · 09/01/2020 22:42

Oh and when i die. You can eat me. And if i get killed to feed others in Armageddon.
Crack on. I lost.

MaxNormal · 09/01/2020 22:43

I don’t know how people eat dairy. It has puss in it. There is a legal limit to how much puss milk can contain

In the US. Not in the EU fortunately.

No humans are not carnivores we are omnivores.
Gorillas have a completely different digestive system to us. They have big bellies to be able to ferment cellulose. Even they do eat some animal protein though.

EKGEMS · 09/01/2020 22:44

Because I like it but it's a bonus that it pisses you off

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/01/2020 22:44

Are you a secret plant for the meat industry, OP?

Of course we should be cutting down on red meat and dairy. But there are many valid reasons for omnivores eating an omnivorous diet. Preaching only pushes people away.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/01/2020 22:45

Puss? You mean ... cats?

MooseBreath · 09/01/2020 22:45

Because the texture of vegan substitutes is awful. Because animal products are less expensive. Because I am an omnivore. Because soy products are just as bad as locally sourced meat and dairy. Because I support our farmers and the agriculture industry. Because unless countries like China, the US and Russia tackle their massive impact on the environment, my eating animal products will make fuck all difference.

I recycle, walk places when I can, keep my heating at a minimum, and try not to consume unnecessarily. I will not feel ashamed for eating meat and drinking milk.

Mamboitaliano · 09/01/2020 22:47

I'm not a vegan and have no interest in or plans to become one but... I'm really interested in what's going to happen to the UK's meat industry after Brexit because 70% of slaughterhouse workers are from the EU member states, not the UK.

Mrschainsawuk · 09/01/2020 22:48

Because I hate the taste of all meat subs and it's not in my budget is can only spend £30 a week for the 3 of us for food we don't eat processed food and I buy alot of reduced fish ect

Silverray · 09/01/2020 22:49

I think all you’ve done with this thread is encourage a load of people to continue not being vegan

SweetNorthernRose · 09/01/2020 22:49

The problem isn't with eating meat per se, the problem is with the amount we eat and therefore the demand which leads to intensive and unethical farming practices. If we all just ate a bit less, and what we did eat was from ethical sources, it would probably help just as much as being completely vegan.
I think we would be in just the same position if everyone was vegan, demanding more and more soy/almond/other plant based products. The practices used to farm these things on the scale required to meet demand would be just as devastating. Perhaps not in the same way but detrimental to the planet nonetheless.

SilverySurfer · 09/01/2020 22:51

If you want to eat inedible shit go right ahead, but we don't want to hear about it. I eat meat, most of which is locally sourced and all is free range and have zero interest in what you think.

Purplespup16 · 09/01/2020 22:51

What do you think will happen to all the farm animals if everyone became vegan?? They won’t be allowed to be set free (that would be incredibly cruel even if they were) farmers won’t keep them as pets until they die of old age! If they did keep them them as pets then that’s not going to help the climate is it?!

SoupDragon · 09/01/2020 22:52

Justification: I like both meat and dairy and it pisses off annoying vegans like the OP

People pretend to hate vegans because we’re annoying and preachy but the real reason is your own guilty consciences.

Nope. You pretty much nailed it with the first part of that except that I only hate the annoying preachy vegans. The ones who just get on with it without being an arse are fine.

TrainspottingWelsh · 09/01/2020 22:52

I'll double check when I go out shortly, but I'm pretty sure the neighbours land is still grass rather than soya and the big stack of bales isn't palm oil to see his beef herd through the winter. But if some randomer on the internet says it is then it must be true.

Go milk a coconut.

sleepymoggy · 09/01/2020 22:52

Isn't the planet heading where it was always meant to though? No matter what your belief or lack of, we've evolved as we have. We often realise our ingenuity comes at a price and try to compensate but there's been nothing to stifle the ingenuity and very often we benefit from it on a humane level. I'm certain there was another past body of humans also wringing their hands at impending doom. It came and then there was rebirth. And so it continues. So have the steak with creamy peppercorn sauce.
