How do you clean your loo!

Aibu to wonder how everyone cleans their toilet?! I'm more talking about the seat, the lid and under. Do you use a cloth you then wash or a disposable cloth or wipe? How do you get in all the books and crannies to get it clean? It's job I hate doing and I can never get it as clean as others.

@EmeraldShamrock ah that makes sense. I might get DH to utilise an old toothbrush actually - I regularly get him to remove the whole seat to clean round the hinges. As it’s me that does the daily spritz clean (not to mention the floor Hmm) he can do the deeper clean.

WellErrr · 09/01/2020 12:46

I only get toilet water on me if I have to stick my hand down the toilet to alleviate a blockage, usually involving shit.

You would clear a blockage of shit with your hand!? Shock

Baaaahhhhh · 09/01/2020 12:48

Those who use toilet brushes; HOW are you not scared of toilet water splash back

Every time you flush the toilet, micro droplets of bacteria laden water escape into the bathroom and alight on all your toothbrushes and surfaces Grin. Don't worry about it. You can drink your urine, so only pooh is a bit grim, and are you sure everyone closes the lid when they flush??

Me, I have a dedicated loo cloth. Spray the cloth and toilet with anti-bac, wipe from top to bottom, on the outside, don't go inside. Bleach or toilet duck and scrub with a brush inside and under the rim. Leave the toilet brush to soak in the loo, and spray the cloth again with antibac and leave to dry. Only clean once a week, never wash the cloth, but change it regularly.

I can hear the MN groans of disgust. Btw, family inc. kids, never, ever sick or tummy upsets. Perhaps we have developed good immunity from my, by MN standards, slobby cleaning.

I can remember my DM back in the day, before anti-bac cleaners existed, cleaned with just Cif and maybe a bit of bleach. Same cloths were used for entire bathroom, and were kept for years. Amazingly we all managed to survive.

CakeandCustard28 · 09/01/2020 12:49

Loo roll and dettol for the bits people touch. Toilet brush and bleach for the inside. I can’t imagine using the same pissy cloth for the entire thing. 🤢 Not very hygienic!

SisterAgatha · 09/01/2020 12:52

Close the lid before you flush. That helps matters.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 09/01/2020 12:54

Yes. Hand down bog, pull blockage back to allow water to drain, flush again to remove remaining shit/bog roll, wash hands and lower arm.

Takes ten seconds and works every time.

I'm just not squeamish about a bit of faeces.

QuestionableMouse · 09/01/2020 12:56

@gamerchick

You wash the handle with the cloth that's just been all over the rest of the loo? That's disgusting. I'm not normally precious about stuff like this but that's really unhygienic!

Spam88 · 09/01/2020 12:56

Toilet brush for the inside, disposable wipe for the outside (going from cleanest to dirtiest bits). I am aware I'm contributing to the death of the planet with my disposable wipe habit, but I think it's at least partly balanced out by how infrequently I actually clean the toilet...?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/01/2020 12:58

You would clear a blockage of shit with your hand!? well yes. It is easy to do, as WeeSleekit explains. Poo is just the last of your food! I can't see why it is so much nastier on the way out than on the way in.. sticky and smelly yes, but not scary!

Zebracat · 09/01/2020 12:59

I’m closing to flush from now on. I use toilet paper and whatever cleaner was on offer. I have a toilet brush, it’s used on a cleanish toilet with cleaner, and then held in the flush and stored in disinfectant and water. If someone used it to force poo round the bend, it would be bagged and binned. I think that accounts for MN horror, but that is not how most people use them. Occasional bleaching.

Swinesinsleepingbags · 09/01/2020 12:59

@WellErrr how else do you unblock the toilet?

Ifonly86 · 09/01/2020 13:01

Always kitchen roll and bleach for my own toilet, using a washable cloth is gross. I’m a cleaner and use disposable wipes on their toilets and dry with tissue.

gamerchick · 09/01/2020 13:01

With the same cloth!? That’s vile!! The bit that people touch every time, you wash with the cloth that’s just wiped the pissy bits!? Eww!

You've got a bucket of hot soapy water. How minging are your bogs? If your kid pisses it's knickers do you just throw the pissy clothes away? Hmm

knew there'd be some bizarre responses on here but this one has got me stumped

4 in 1 floor steamer. It comes to bits for different jobs.

Another good hack is periodically pour a full kettle of boiling water down the loo and a good squirt of dishwasher, and leave that overnight. That dissolves the stuff in the u bend

And risk a cracked toilet? Awesome idea Grin

Reading this thread, some people are really weird about toilets.

gamerchick · 09/01/2020 13:02

The handle is the most dirtiest bit.

Christ alive man Grin

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 09/01/2020 13:03

In fairness to WellErr I know people who clear such blockages with old wire coat hangers, including my own husband.

We all have things we are squeamish about.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 09/01/2020 13:07

@gamerchick I just can't comprehend needing to use a steamer a toilet Grin

Toilet duck and a toilet brush does most the work.
Cloth with a bit of bleach if the rim gets dirty then normal bathroom cleaner on and around the seat area, surely?

I love how het up people are getting about it though!

Thefaceofboe · 09/01/2020 13:09

I’m shocked at how dirty people’s toilet seem to be! My toilet doesn’t look physically dirty but obviously I clean it anyway

Dumbledoresgirl · 09/01/2020 13:11

I have a designated cloth for the loo.

I clean with a cream cleaner, then have some toilet duck or similar for squirting round the rim to leave and get that nice clean smell.

Use a general bathroom cloth to clean the handle.

Never use disposable wipes and never felt the need to use antibac spray, except after illness, maybe.

I always had a thing about putting my hands down the loo until I got a new loo and then it didn't seem quite as disgusting. I put on really strong rubber gloves and quite enjoy scrubbing below the water line. We live in a very hard water area so limescale is always a problem but if you start off with a new loo and clean frequently, the limescale can't build up. It is no different to cleaning the inside of a bucket which I have had to do after someone has been sick in it, or after a really mucky job. But strong gloves are the key. I wouldnt put my bare hands down the loo.

Other good thing about my new loo: the seat is removable. Every so often, I get it off and give it a lovely soak in the bath (before cleaning the bath obviously).

goingtoneedabiggercar · 09/01/2020 13:11

I wipe with loo roll and put bleach down the loo. I am less squeamish than I was as I had to unblock a caravan toilet on holiday in September. No plunger. It was grim.

Fivefourthree · 09/01/2020 13:13

I do a flylady 'swish and swipe' every day. I keep rubber toilet brush in a jug with a bit of shampoo in it by the toilet. Quick scrub round inside of toilet, then a wipe over the other bits with some paper, then flush. Occasional spray with household cleaner (Method in this house) with a more thorough clean of hinges with a cotton but if they look like they need it. Call me disgusting but I mop floor and wipe round pedestal bit with an old towel most days then chuck towel in wash. My children all survived to adulthood, and we all remain healthy Grin

AmazingGreats · 09/01/2020 13:13

I clean the rest of the bathroom with a cloth or sponge, and finish with the toilet and throw it away afterwards. I tend to get an antibacterial wipe and go over all the taps and door handles and light switches and the flush and things at the end as they are touched the most so the grossest bits. I do have a loo brush. Blush

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/01/2020 13:13

I’m shocked at how dirty people’s toilet seem to be! Can I ask if you live in a hard water area? Some of them (and I live in one) you only have to look at your loo and the pan gets dirty!

I wasn't born here and was initially horrified at how dirty the loo gets!

mygrandchildrenrock · 09/01/2020 13:14

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey 'I just wash my hands after, no biggie.' I think if your toilet was blocked it's because it was a biggie!

Straycatstrut · 09/01/2020 13:17

Spray bleach or disinfectant and wipe with loo roll and flush too. Can't use clothes in there, just can't!

MegaClutterSlut · 09/01/2020 13:20

I use anti bac wipes on the seat, outside, cistern and handle. I use harpic and a bog brush on the loo. There is no way i'm sticking my hand in the bog
