To not want to cancel our holiday?

BeeFreeForTea · 08/01/2020 19:36

As a family, we've booked to go away to Turkey in May.

AIBU to not want to cancel? My DMum says we really should since there may well be war, we could get caught up, etc etc.

I'm not really down with all the news and politics at the moment so could anyone fill me in? Would it be dangerous to go?

Thank you

I wouldn't cancel if I were you.

crustycrab · 08/01/2020 19:40

Personally I wouldn't go but then I wouldn't have booked in the first place. Will it cost you a lot to change the holiday? It's unlikely that you'll be caught up in anything really but I wouldn't be able to relax the same as I would in Spain for example

RuggerHug · 08/01/2020 19:40

Have you insurance? Wait until closer to the time.

MondeoFan · 08/01/2020 19:41

I wouldn't go to Turkey I'm afraid, can you not change it?

ShirleyPhallus · 08/01/2020 19:41

What do you think has changed since you booked?

QueenofallIsee · 08/01/2020 19:43

I haven’t seen a warning as yet though the FCO is recommending not travel to Middle East including Dubai and Egypt is also on the warming list

Don’t cancel yet, monitor the FCO warnings but do read the T&Cs if your holiday and insurance. If it does go onto the ‘not advised’ list, your insurance would be invalidated but you’d get your money back normally

WalkAwaySugarbear · 08/01/2020 19:43

I know loads people who love Turkey but there's no way we'd go there or Egypt or Tunisia given the political climate.

Cyllie33 · 08/01/2020 19:45

Turkey is a big country. If you were planning to holiday near the Iraqi/Syrian border (which I’m guessing is v unlikely) then I wouldn’t have booked it and would cancel. West and near Istanbul I don’t see what the issue is tbh.

KittenVsBox · 08/01/2020 19:45

Get insurance NOW, if you dont already!
If the government change the guidance to make Turkey unsafe for travel, the travel company or insurance should help you out.
Currently, I dont believe Turkey is a place travel us advised against.

heartsonacake · 08/01/2020 19:46

Well, I wouldn’t have booked Turkey in the first place given the current situation.

crimsonlake · 08/01/2020 19:47

Same here, I would not have booked in the first place. Hope you manage to change it.

Whentheleavesfalldown · 08/01/2020 19:47

We're going to Turkey in may, although haven't booked it yet. Unless you're going near the syria border which is unlikely, I don't get why people wouldn't travel there. It's a beautiful country, very friendly locals.

thaaaafuck · 08/01/2020 19:48

I'm due to go to turkey in may too! As far as I'm aware Marmaris/Alayna side is pretty safe but do keep checking travel advice!

Teateaandmoretea · 08/01/2020 19:49

It's no more dangerous than travelling to London with all the stabbing etc there are risks everywhere. Just follow foreign office advice, there is no problem right now and if there becomes one advice will change. It's a big country.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 08/01/2020 19:50

I wouldn't cancel but I'm not sure travel insurance covers cancellation in cases where war breaks out, anyway.

toddlertantrumhell · 08/01/2020 19:50

I love Turkey and Id happily book now. Tourist areas will be fine unless you're told otherwise by our government

JustACog · 08/01/2020 19:51

There's not going to be a war.

ShirleyPhallus · 08/01/2020 19:51

What on earth are you talking about? London is very safe. Stabbings don’t just happen randomly to people on the street there Confused

SuperMeerkat · 08/01/2020 19:51

Hopefully you’ll be fine. It’s true that something could happen but it could happen anywhere, we just never know. I wouldn’t cancel. We loved it when we went to Marmaris in 2018.

Teateaandmoretea · 08/01/2020 19:52

So is Turkey, that's the point.

MM hysteria just baffles me

42isthemeaning · 08/01/2020 19:57

Travel insurance doesn't cover war or civil unrest.

Teateaandmoretea · 08/01/2020 20:00

It's highly unlikely marmaris is going to be a war zone anytime soon.

ViaSacra · 08/01/2020 20:01

There's not going to be a war, and certainly not in Turkey.

The risk is terrorism, not war.

It's possible that the events of the last week may lead Islamist extremists within Turkey to attack Western tourists.

Your individual risk of being caught up in anything is very small, but the overall chance of something of that kin happening has probably increased somewhat.
