To not want to cancel our holiday?

BeeFreeForTea · 08/01/2020 19:36

As a family, we've booked to go away to Turkey in May.

AIBU to not want to cancel? My DMum says we really should since there may well be war, we could get caught up, etc etc.

I'm not really down with all the news and politics at the moment so could anyone fill me in? Would it be dangerous to go?

Thank you

Personally, I wouldn't cancel. The chance that your family will personally be affected by a terrorist attack remains very small.

sonjadog · 08/01/2020 20:02

I would wait until a lot nearer the time before worrying about that.

Teateaandmoretea · 08/01/2020 20:03

And it could happen in the UK, Spain, France or anywhere.

Derbee · 08/01/2020 20:03

Presumably by booking a summer holiday to Turkey, you’ve chosen to make a trade off that you’re comfortable with, when balancing low costs and lower safety? Stick with your plans and hope for the best. Presumably you got insurance, so if a proper war breaks out and the advice is not to travel, you’re covered anyway

BeardedMum · 08/01/2020 20:07

I would not go to Turkey. I am waiting for. Tunisia beach style attack there. I am happy to travel to most places but not Turkey.

moodolph · 08/01/2020 20:07

@queenofalllsee can you link that re duabi for me please. It says be vigilient when I look. Have elderly friends booked for february to duabi.

purplecorkheart · 08/01/2020 20:08

Honestly, I would not have booked Turkey in the first place (admittedly based on advice given by the Irish Department Foreign Affairs) but I am in Economic mumbo jumbo exceptionally risk adverse!!

Teateaandmoretea · 08/01/2020 20:09

Turkey is a secular country it isn't the same as Tunisia which is Muslim and also in Africa. That type of attack could realistically happen anywhere, France has had some of the biggest terrorist problems in recent years but no one ever suggests not going there (and I went last year).

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 08/01/2020 20:11

Turkey is a big country. If you were planning to holiday near the Iraqi/Syrian border (which I’m guessing is v unlikely) then I wouldn’t have booked it and would cancel. West and near Istanbul I don’t see what the issue is tbh.

Karenisbaren · 08/01/2020 20:11

I would not cancel your holiday, the cock swining has stopped.

Teateaandmoretea · 08/01/2020 20:12

The biggest danger in Turkey are the foul, sexist men in my experience. And the fucking heat 😂😂🤷🏻‍♀️

This

Turkey is not of the most beautiful countries to visit.

danni0509 · 08/01/2020 20:22

We go to Turkey every year. Have done for years and years. Never had any issues.

I am going to Egypt later this year.

BeeFreeForTea · 08/01/2020 20:22

We are off to Dalaman (did I spell that right?) if that helps

Some people might want to listen to the news and see what is happening between Iran, the USA and the U.K.

So yes there is no war in Turkey yet. Nothing is saying yet how this will develop and of this is going to be more of an issue. No way to say either what will be the position of Turkey into that.

I wouod, however, keep the hols atm but keep a close eye in what is happening. Much closer than what you have done so far.

PineappleDanish · 08/01/2020 20:33

Well that's up to you, but you can't expect any travel insurer to pay out unless the Foreign Office starts to advise against travel.

KitKat1985 · 08/01/2020 20:36

I wouldn't do anything at this point. It's very unlikely you would be near any conflict even if there was a war.

I doubt the OP is holidaying within 10km of the Syrian border.

NailsNeedDoing · 08/01/2020 20:48

I’d happily go to Turkey, and would think anyone advising me not to go was being slightly hysterical tbh. There are some beautiful places to visit there, and it’s a huge country. You will be fine in Dalaman.

notangelinajolie · 08/01/2020 20:49

I wouldn't cancel but I wouldn't have booked to go to Turkey in the first place.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/01/2020 20:50

Make sure you have insurance now, so many people leave it to a few days before they leave. We have booked Croatia, but up until last week were planning on Northern Cyprus.

EpcotForever · 08/01/2020 20:55

@maddiemookins16mum oh no, we are due to go to Cyprus in April/may for a friend's wedding. Hope everything will be fine by then..

schoolcats · 08/01/2020 21:01

We've just ruled it out for this year but we haven't booked anything yet so that's why - there is no point in booking anything that we might have to cancel. If we'd booked then we'd wait for the foreign office advice, if it came not to travel then we would have to change it because our insurance would be invalid - we had to do this a few years ago when we'd booked to go to Ephesus.
