Will DD be huge?!

Dd is 10.5 months. Just came back from a visit to the health visitor for her 12 month check and she’s tall - 98th percentile. Her weight is much lower but she’s at the right point (can’t recall where).

Does this mean she’ll always be really tall?? I’m now worrying she’ll always tower over the other kids. I’m 5ft 7 and DH is 5ft 10.

How does it work??

Why is it an issue if she is tall?

Angie6868 · 08/01/2020 18:12

I don't know the answer to your question but why would it worry you if she's tall? Very bizarre

Digitalash · 08/01/2020 18:12

No I was always tall, one of the tallest in class till I was 12 then I stopped growing and now short for an adult, 5ft 2.

Percentileconfusion · 08/01/2020 18:12

It’s not but I’m wondering if it’s an indicator of a 6ft plus adult...

It depends a bit on when your dd goes through puberty, I was told by a Paediatrician that once periods start girls only grown about another 3-5cm .
You can do the adult height predictor in the red book to give you a rough guesstimate.

Trafalger · 08/01/2020 18:14

My eldest was very very tall as a child until she hit puberty and literally hasnt grown a cm since. She is now 5"4 and in her twenties. My toddler is also 99th centile for height and weight and I wait to see how she is when puberty hits again! My toddler does have much bigger feet than my eldest though. She is already a 9.5 at nearly 3.

Buggerforwantofabettername · 08/01/2020 18:14

My DD is 6 foot, and was off the scales as a baby. Was also the tallest in her class right the way through school. I am 5 foot. Why would you be concerned by the idea of having a tall daughter?

Mumof1andacat · 08/01/2020 18:14

I think size of a baby doesn't mean much. My dh was the smallest boy in the class when he started school but left school measuring 6ft 2"

nonevernotever · 08/01/2020 18:15

No it doesn't. I was really tall at that age and numerous Dr's and health visitors predicted I would be over 6 foot as an adult. In fact, while I was the tallest or equal tallest all the way through primary school, I've been 5'6 since I was 11 and stuck there while everyone else caught up or overtook me. I should really be about 8 foot tall for my weight these days, but that's another story....

BarbedBloom · 08/01/2020 18:16

I am 6ft 2 and was off the scale at that age, but it doesn't always mean it will happen in every case. I love being tall

2020BetterBeBetter · 08/01/2020 18:17

DD2 was 98th centile for height until she was two. A year later and she hasn’t grown at all so is right down the centile charts.

Elle7rose · 08/01/2020 18:18

I'm 5 ft 6. I was I think quite high up in the centiles as a baby and was a lot taller than other kids until the age of about 11 but I'd almost stopped growing by the time I was 13/14.

Neither you, nor your DH is very tall so there's no particular reason to imagine that your daughter will reach 6ft.

Gertie75 · 08/01/2020 18:18

My dad was on the 98th percentile and now aged 6 she's the tallest in her class and in age 8-9 clothes.

In her red book if you followed the line across it led to her being 5'8" as an adult which is the same as me and not overly tall.

Percentileconfusion · 08/01/2020 18:18

Let me be clear, I’m not posting this desperately hoping she won’t be tall, I’m just curious because I was surprised to hear she’s tall (she’s my first so have no real perspective on baby height) and wondered if they tend to fluctuate on the chart. Eg could she be, say on the 25th percentile in 6 months time or doesn’t it work like that?

Dd not Dad!

HarrietM87 · 08/01/2020 18:19

I was an extremely tall child, tallest by a mile in primary school. Others caught up/overtook me in secondary and I’m 5’7 now so not short but hardly a giant. DH is 5’9ish and our son (20 months) has always been extremely tall/long - off the charts height wise since birth. I feel like he’ll end up taller than DH but not necessarily by that much.

schafernaker · 08/01/2020 18:21

It shows you on the right hand side of the chart (if I recall correctly) a height predictor

My DD is in line to be 4ft something and we are both relatively tall 😂

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2020 18:21

My daughter was in that centile and at 22 years old she's just under 5 foot nine. I'm just under five eight, her father is six foot.

I'd say she will be taller than you but smaller than your husband. So likely 5ft eight or so. It is not predictable but that's the most likely.

Autumn101 · 08/01/2020 18:22

Both my DC (big babies) were really tall until 2/3 years old then it slowed down. DS1 is 11.5 and probably average height now and DS2 nearly 10 is taller than average but more like 70th percentile rather than the 99th he was to start.

I’m 5ft 5 and DH 5ft 11 so both pretty average so I’d expect our DC to be similar.

autumnmum · 08/01/2020 18:24

My DD was on 98th%ile and is now 5ft10 but stopped growing. Her dad is 6ft5. Her brother is off the chart for height (has been since birth) and 5ft5 at 11 - we expect him to be as tall as his dad if not taller. I'm 5ft6 which my family all consider to be tiny 😂

QueenofallIsee · 08/01/2020 18:24

My sister was a top percentile baby, the tallest in her class through primary school, developed first and is now 5ft3! I was a 6lb baby, relatively small in stature through childhood and stopped growing at 15 at 5ft7. I don’t think the predictors are especially accurate

ViaSacra · 08/01/2020 18:26

My daughter was on the 98th percentile at 9 months; but by the time she started primary school she was never one of the tallest - just a little above average.

Casscass1986 · 08/01/2020 18:26

I'm not sure it is that accurate an indicator. My DD was on the 99th percentile till about 2 when her percentile started to reduce. I'm 5'7", my DH IS 6'3" and my DD AT 17 is 5'5". I think, especially for girls age of puberty has a large impact on adult height.

mummyof2boys30 · 08/01/2020 18:28

Ds2 was exact same weight as his brother when born but 5cm longer. He was off the charts as a baby. Is 7 now and probably about a foot taller than all his classmates. Same height as his almost 10 year old brother.

AJPTaylor · 08/01/2020 18:28

Dd3 has always been 98 plus centile. Was as a tiny baby. Still is as a just turned 12 year old at 5 feet 6. I thought that she would have slowed down but no sign yet.
