Will DD be huge?!

Dd is 10.5 months. Just came back from a visit to the health visitor for her 12 month check and she’s tall - 98th percentile. Her weight is much lower but she’s at the right point (can’t recall where).

Does this mean she’ll always be really tall?? I’m now worrying she’ll always tower over the other kids. I’m 5ft 7 and DH is 5ft 10.

How does it work??

My 3 youngest were all 90-98th height centile at 12 months (actually from birth), they are all 5'5 - 5'7 now but one stopped growing at 12 (tallest) the other one at 16 (shortest), 14 year may still grow a bit more 🤷🏽‍♀️

We are 5' and 6'3".

Babyroobs · 08/01/2020 18:29

My Ds was on 98th percentile as a baby. He's 5ft 11 now.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 08/01/2020 18:29

DS1 has been on/above the 99th centile since he was born. His Dad is 6'6" and I'm 5'10" so he was always going to be tall, but at just turned 14 he is far, far taller than I'd have imagined.

It can be accurate, it can taper off, I think it's more about your parents/Grandparents height than those charts.

PPopsicle · 08/01/2020 18:30

I was always so incredibly tall compared to my peers. Until I hit 12. I haven’t grown since

Bluebooby · 08/01/2020 18:31

My DD was a long baby, she's 5 now and I'm not sure of her exact height at the moment but she looks to be one of the shorter ones in her class.

Bluebooby · 08/01/2020 18:32

popsicle I had a very short aunt, no longer with us, who apparently was the tallest in her class until she turned 12 and everyone else grew but her.

QueenofPain · 08/01/2020 18:33

Why are you worried?

My dad is 6ft 6, my mum is 5’7, I’m 6ft.

It bothered me when I was younger mainly due to other people’s comments and perception of tallness. But now I don’t care, intact I like it. You stand out far more as a tall person.

PPopsicle · 08/01/2020 18:38

@Bluebooby
Christ, something weird must happen to our bodies at 12 Confused

SinkGirl · 08/01/2020 18:39

As far as I’m aware the height predictor based on centiles isn’t accurate until they’re much older (2 or 3).

My twins are just at the top of the 0.4th centile for height and they are 3 so they’ll likely be the sort of short men frequently declared undateable on MN. Lovely.

When my sister was young they predicted she’d be 5’10” by adulthood but she’s only 5’5”.

KeatesCat · 08/01/2020 18:42

I'm 5'6'' and DH is 5'8'' (well, we were in our mid-twenties - we've both shrunk an inch now). DS is 15.5 and 5'11''.
He was 56 cm at birth (between 98th and 99.6th percentile in red book); was around the 91st percentile up to age one; between ages one and five he was just over the 50th percentile most of the time; age five and six he was on the 50th line; age seven to ten it was closer to the 75th and now he between the 75th and 91st line.
So no idea!

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 08/01/2020 18:44

mine are, both born enormous and just went up and up

1 was 26 inches the other 27 inches(yes really),both born with massive feet as well

i never did hvs so they wasnt measured every week but i did it myself monthly on a printout chart and they both were always over the 100% so i gave up plotting

the 15 y old was 8lb and 26 inches
the 9 y old 9lb.10oz 27 inches,i was told by the hospital he was the longest baby they ever saw,he was even to big for the plastic cot box they give you

both came out the natural way, admitting youngest got stuck

15,now 6ft 2, 9st 6 size adult 12 shoe
9,5ft 3(yes at 9)130 pounds size adult 6 shoe

im 6ft(female)size adult 13
dad 5ft 7 but grandad on dads side was 6ft 10

we home ed now(obviously my user name)but when youngest started nursery at just 3 and a few weeks because of birthday(took out start of y1)he was 3ft 6 and in 7-8 clothes

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 08/01/2020 18:48

DD has always been off the scale in terms of height, she's 10 now wears age 14 year old clothes for the length and a size 5 shoe.

Health wise she developed Severs disease, she often complained of having sore feet when walking anywhere but I brushed it off for quite a while because we walked everywhere as I couldn't drive at the time so be aware of that. It tends to develop in tall active children as their legs grow faster than the heel growth plate (or something along those lines). It explains why despite years of dance she wasn't very flexible and she has to avoid any high impact activities. She will grow out of it as soon as she is fully grown and doesn't have any more growth spurts.

Because she gave up dance she started competitive swimming instead as it was low impact and that is a great sport for tall people as their longer limbs give them an advantage.

DurhamDurham · 08/01/2020 18:49

My girls were tall as babies/children, tallest on their class until secondary school then all their peers caught up and then overtook them. One of my daughters started her periods at 11 and family said that was why she stopped growing, our other daughter didn't start her periods until she was 15 and they've ended up the same height so that clearly wasn't the reason they stopped growing.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 08/01/2020 18:51

The biggest downfall was people treating her and having expectations of her as a much older child than she was.

Duckydarling · 08/01/2020 18:54

There are some things you can change, your height is not one of them.

All the teens and young adults I know are taller than my generation (the hated boomers). Don’t worry.

Likethebattle · 08/01/2020 18:57

I was always one of the tallest in my peer group, I got to 5’9’’in my teens and stayed and most people caught up. I just wish my mums family (who ate all around 5’) would stop going on about it. My brother being 6’3’’ is also commented on constantly!

Notthissh1tagain · 08/01/2020 18:57

My eldest was pretty small until she was about 4. I mean wearing clothes a year smaller. Then she took a massive stretch and hasn't stopped since.

Shes not super tall but probably well over 75th centile for height.

Bluetrews25 · 08/01/2020 19:16

Allegedly, your adult height is double your height at 18 months.....or that's what I was told back in the dark ages, may well be disproved by now!

11MrsLuther · 08/01/2020 19:23

Just a predictor, which along with height at about age 2 and parental height or family history can predict adult height....in.my experience of 4 kids, it's a combination of the above.

Buggerforwantofabettername · 08/01/2020 19:42

It's all genetics, innit?

My children were both off the scale in length, weight etc when they were born. They are now exactly the same adult height. XH is 6 foot 2. I am 5 foot. They are 6 foot. DS was average height throughout school, and just grew bit by bit. DD was always the tallest and remained so. They are also completely different builds despite being the same height (one takes after me, and the other after their father).

Crystal1975 · 08/01/2020 19:42

My daughter was always on the 99th centile as a child
I’m 5ft and her dad is 6ft 3
She 5ft 10 and has been since she was about 12
Not sure why u would worry that she’s tall?
I find kids do generally seem to be getting taller as now, at 18, although she is taller than her friends, it’s only by and inch or two so hardly noticeable

Gibble1 · 08/01/2020 19:42

Dd was born tiny. Like a little dolly. She was a well padded baby and solid as a toddler/ young child. Always very tall and in clothes 2-3 years older. Had school shoes as her shoes from age 2 as her feet were so big. She reached a size 7-8 in year 8. She reached 5’7” eventually and is the little one in our family. I’m 5’8 1/2” and DH is 6’4”.
DS just turned 16. He has grown taller than his dad over Christmas. I measured him tonight and got him at 6’4” but don’t think that’s right as he’s definitely at least half an inch bigger than his dad! He was always tall although he didn’t grow a great deal between 2-4 and then just took off. He grew 21cm in a year!

Buggerforwantofabettername · 08/01/2020 19:42

DD has bigger feet than DS, though (to their mutual disgust).

ShowOfHands · 08/01/2020 19:49

I am a whisker under 5ft 4" and DH is 5ft 10". DD has always been on the top percentile for height and at age 12 is 5ft 6" with size 8 feet. However, she has slowed right down recently and as she is 2 years into having periods, I think it might taper off.
