National Anthem

Just had an odd conversation with my 12 year old DS who asked me what our National Anthem is. Didn’t even know the tune.

Obviously I could have taught him but really I am just wondering if this is something not taught at school any more?

I must confess I dont know the words to the UK anthem and struggle over bits of the Welsh.

JKScot4 · 09/01/2020 18:16

I think it’s quite an outdated concept, there are too many different views, Scottish, Welsh and Irish devolution, hopefully the Royals will become irrelevant, this admiration of royalty is nonsensical.

Yes - they are irrelevant but cost taxpayers a fortune to manage their irrelevance. Let hope they all decide to 'step back and become financially independent'.

They earn the country a lot more in tourism than they cost.

I believe the French get more tourists than the UK and we all know what happened to their royals.

(and frankly having been to Versailles I only wonder why they didn't do it sooner)

MonstranceClock · 09/01/2020 18:36

I don’t even know what the national anthem is!

Mockers2020Vision · 09/01/2020 18:37

The sucession is a matter for parliament. We could replace the Sax-Coburgs with a more popular family.

How about the Redknapp-Lampards?

MonnaLIza · 09/01/2020 18:38

I don't believe in God, can't say I am fond of the monarchy and don't like saving, much more prefer spending. I like "the" though so I always sing to myself "the the the the". A bit like the 80s band the the. But twice.

JKScot4 · 09/01/2020 18:58

@GiveHerHellFromUs
It’s actually a misconception regards their tourism value, people come to see buildings not the RF, they’d come regardless because of history/heritage. Do other tourist attractions get public funding? no they self promote and generate income.

PhilSwagielka · 09/01/2020 19:01

I didn't say I hate being English. I just said I'm not proud of it, and I don't understand why I should be. I'm not saying if you are proud of being from a country, you're a thick prole or whatever, or suggesting I'm an urbane type.

I mean, I can sing G-d Save The Queen if I have to but that doesn't mean I have to like the damn song.

StoneofDestiny · 09/01/2020 20:25

They do not.
People will visit the UK regardless of them. They will and do visit places and castles whether they are in them or not. They even visit ruined palaces and castles.

Ever seen the crowds at Versailles or The Hermitage in Russia?
Heaving with tourists despite there being no royals in either country.

Mockers2020Vision · 09/01/2020 20:38

The examples of France and Russia suggest what you need for tourism is an executed royal family.

(not a suggestion, but the post-Brexit foreign currency will need to come from something.)

bettybattenburg · 09/01/2020 20:42

It's god save the queen but I have no idea of the words.

Davros · 09/01/2020 20:50

derxa, wow a lot of work went into that. No I don't like "proud to be ...... nationality". An accident of birth making someone feel they're better than people from elsewhere. I'm very happy to be English but proud? No

EnolaAlone · 09/01/2020 20:52

All our national anthem knowledge in our house comes from watching Formula 1. DH has been a Primary School teacher for years and said he can't recall teaching or playing the national anthem.

bettybattenburg · 09/01/2020 21:53

Yes, formula one knowledge here too Grin
