Would you look down on/think less of an otherwise respectable neighbour for smoking weed in his garden?

MoonBaby1 · 07/01/2020 22:10

Sorry if this has been done To death. I know that mumsnet hasn’t famously been that accepting of any smoking but I wanted to see what other parents felt.

We are a respectable (I hope!) family with good relations with all our neighbours. No loud music, parties or bins left out etc.

My dh enjoys a few spliffs a night in our garden and it’s never raised any problems. Earlier today a very lovely neighbour we know and trust made a lighthearted joke about me burning a few cardboard bits left from Christmas (our garden does not border anyone else’s) when I said I hope the smoke is ok he said ‘better than the shite your fella smokes after dark! ‘. Is it still socially unacceptable to smoke weed or is he a bit older and out of touch?

I’m now way overthinking this and I’m worried that people think we’re not a nice family because they can smell weed smoke. I know I shouldn’t worry what people think but it’s got under my skin! I’ve even name changed here despite being anonymous because I’m usually the nice SEN mum posting about special needs and diet.

Ye gods, I don't know where to start. When you take medication, do you just set fire to a loose amount of something with an active ingredient in, inhale the fumes, and hope for the best? Do you set fire to willow barking chippings and inhale the fumes, or do you take aspirin?

If all you want to do is get high, (and you don't care about effects on your lungs), smoking is fine

Doctors do recommend smoking it though when it is for medicinal use? Sometimes that is the most effective method for pain relief.

Isnt it CBD that is used for epilepsy? That doesn't get you high and comes in an oil or pill form. So smoking is a valid method of administering the drug as well as other ways.

RhinoskinhaveI · 08/01/2020 16:56

I would still exchange niceties f we were neighbours to keep the peace but would limit any contact outside of this
this is exactly what I want from my neighbours, you mind your business and I'll mind mine:)

BrokenWing · 08/01/2020 17:06

You obviously dont give a shit about the men, women and children exploited and harmed in the illegal drug supply chain, or breaking the law, so why do you give a damn about what your ndn thinks?

RhinoskinhaveI · 08/01/2020 17:19

I agree brokenwing the sooner it's made legal the better!

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 17:23

Weed makes me very paranoid but it’s usually just that first joint on a Friday after not having it since the Sunday.

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 17:25

I love Blue Cheese, deffo one of the better strains of weed.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 08/01/2020 17:26

One point though. It did not affect my children’s lives at this moment. They are still young and whilst the elder boy knows Daddy smokes he doesn’t know the difference in the smells. I’ve taught him that smoking is yucky and grim and that he doesn’t want to copy his dad. He agrees.

One day your children will know exactly what daddy is smoking (because he wont stop, a couple of spliffs a night is an addict). It will go one of 2 ways, they will either think hes cool and want to join him or will be utterly embarrassed. Both my parents smoked cannabis throughout my childhood, every single day. I no doubt went to school stinking of it despite them always doing it outside. I was utterly mortified when people mentioned it. And it made them shitty parents, yes they turned up to their professional jobs everyday but at home they just had no motivation to do anything at all and were unpleasant to be around. It made my dad paranoid and he was vile to be around on the occasions there was a dry spell and he couldn't get any.
They stopped a few years ago now and are both so much better for it, Mentally and physically.

I'm not actually against occasional recreational and medicinal use of cannabis and would fully support legalisation. However I still think the danger of addicstion and the effects it has on family should be taken seriously and it rarely is when it comes to cannabis in my experience.

Grand! And until it is, I really hope those who dont grow their own or have some friendly, weed growing pensioner round the corner, don't buy it. Or is it just a case of caring about the horrors along the supply chain...unless it gets in the way of my weed habit? If it does then fuck 'em.

Taraohara · 08/01/2020 17:42

Op

You can call me a criminal for smoking the odd spliff if you like, but luckily the many people in law enforcement I know would laugh their heads off at you (they often partake too

You know many people in law enforcement?

Really 😂

What do you consider to be law enforcement?

Are you talking police or Bailiffs?

Because I seriously doubt you have many police officer mates that hang out in your garden smoking cannabis aware that they can be seen by your neighbours in this small little village.

You obviously are happy to use drugs and annoy your neighbours. Just leave it at that

TheFuzzyStar · 08/01/2020 17:45

Our next door neighbour smokes it and I hate it when I can smell it In the summer if our son is playing out.

This. I actually support legalisation with a few caveats, but I condemn those who support the drugs trade.

I'm told there are people who buy fair-trade products and yet take illegal drugs. I cannot fathom such a strange stance. I buy fair-trade whenever I can, and I would no more buy cannabis or cocaine than I would buy caged eggs.

BlouseAndSkirt · 08/01/2020 18:23

Just legalise it and reduce pearl clutching by 95%

Just legalise it and reduce the number of trafficked Vietnamese minors in modern slavery cannabis farms, the number of gang related stabbings....

This is directly linked to weed NOW unless he is smoking home grown. The responsibility is that of users now.

By all means campaign for legalisation but for now responsibility is down to everyone in this chain of horrors, including the consumer.

Do they indeed. Did you know that tobacco causes lung cancer? Some research suggests cannabis might be worse, and it's certainly not neutral.

www.nhs.uk/news/heart-and-lungs/cannabis-lung-health-risks-underestimated/

Meanwhile, are doctors actually able to prescribe medical grade cannabis as a tablet?

So if I take your word for it that smoking is recommended, why are they saying smoking is better for pain relief? Because it genuinely is, because the patient is going to die anyway, or because it's the only form available?

Well, decide for yourself which answer fits, because smoking is actually going to be recommended over CBD oils because CBD oils are unregulated. Some of them don't contain active ingredients and others contain too much.

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 18:27

Well the weed trade is very different from selling coke and heroin and most weed sellers only sell weed and nothing else.

It’s easy to say don’t support the drug trade but if you smoke it and don’t grow it then where are you meant to buy it?!

EvilPea · 08/01/2020 18:30

where are you meant to buy it?!

Tesco, sainsburys, wilko.

Oh hang on, no you can’t as it’s illegal!!!

Kids are still getting stabbed in the weed trade.

Snugglepumpkin · 08/01/2020 18:33

Of course I would look down on you.
I'd be polite to your face though, in case you were also one of those druggie families who have friends who go round stealing to feed their habits as I wouldn't want my house broken into.

You are probably described in your neighbourhood as something along the lines of "the drug taking family" (whatever the normal words in use in your area are) if people are talking about you even if all they are referring to is the fact you haven't taken your bin in.

I wouldn't let my child play with your children or visit your house because as far as I'm concerned you do not live in an environment I want my child to think is normal or acceptable.

Your children will grow up thinking this is okay because they see their authority figures are okay with it.

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 18:37

I get my weed from 2 guys that in that in their 30s and one of them grows it, they’re brothers and they’re not into gangs and stuff.

I wouldn’t buy weed from a teenager although I’ve been offered!

littleduckeggblue · 08/01/2020 18:37

Urgh not nice. I'd be pissed off if my neighbour smoked it. It stinks and is illegal. Very chavvy

Pillowaddict · 08/01/2020 18:37

I'm afraid I do judge, as someone who drinks at weekends, smokes occasionally and has partaken in the past, a daily habit if several joints seems excessive and unhealthy. I don't drink or smoke daily, and would be concerned if any parents of young kids did in their proximity.
The smell of weed makes me physically ill and I'd hate for a neighbour to do this every day. At a festival for a weekend, fair enough I'd expect it, but not in my own home/street. And yes, I'd judge him if I saw him out sinking several pints or bottles of wine every evening too, it is not just the legal factor, it's the sense effect, safeguarding issue and antisocial impact.

beautifulxdisasters · 08/01/2020 18:38

We moved from our last house cos the neighbours smoked weed - small gardens and we could smell it all the time. So yes I think YABU. Not sure I'd find legal tobacco smoking more tolerable though tbf!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 08/01/2020 18:41

Did you see 24chours in police custody last night?young men dealing in cannabis. Not heroin or coke. Making 2 thousand pounds a WEEK.
One of them murdered over the drugs. Stabbed in the neck and left in the woods.

formerbabe · 08/01/2020 18:42

Awww lovely, like the farmer's market version of drug dealing

ViciousJackdaw · 08/01/2020 18:49

Legalise it and use the revenue for education and public health. OK, that's a bit simplistic but that's basically how it works in Colorado.

I would strongly recommend your DH looks at the Volcano. Costly at first but the saving on tobacco and skins is worth it, along with the fact that you get much more 'relaxed' for a lot less weed.

It's the tobacco (if used) that's dangerous, not the weed. It's much easier to stop using it completely these days, what with all the different vaping devices available. They give off much less odour too so maybe he could give it some thought?

MissConductUS · 08/01/2020 18:51

Re legalization, medical cannabis has been widely available in the US for quite a while and 11 states have now legalized it for recreational use as well.

The smoked form (aka "flower") is often prescribed because different strains can have different therapeutic properties. It's also much less expensive than a pharmaceutical product.

Commercial cannabis farms are licensed, regulated and inspected by the same state agency that licenses retail outlets. There is no interstate trade in cannabis now and no slavery in the supply chains. The jobs pay very well and are sought after. The retail outlets are like posh shops.

The black market hasn't disappeared in the states that have legal cannabis simply because without taxes and regulatory compliance costs the black market product is cheaper, but you don't know what you're getting. So most people pay the premium and get the legal products.

Ilovemypantry · 08/01/2020 18:51

If I were your neighbour I would definitely not be happy about it. I live in a detached house but the houses are quite close together. The lodgers next door smoke weed regularly in the garden and it absolutely stinks vile! It is illegal, antisocial and unacceptable imo
