Would you look down on/think less of an otherwise respectable neighbour for smoking weed in his garden?

MoonBaby1 · 07/01/2020 22:10

Sorry if this has been done To death. I know that mumsnet hasn’t famously been that accepting of any smoking but I wanted to see what other parents felt.

We are a respectable (I hope!) family with good relations with all our neighbours. No loud music, parties or bins left out etc.

My dh enjoys a few spliffs a night in our garden and it’s never raised any problems. Earlier today a very lovely neighbour we know and trust made a lighthearted joke about me burning a few cardboard bits left from Christmas (our garden does not border anyone else’s) when I said I hope the smoke is ok he said ‘better than the shite your fella smokes after dark! ‘. Is it still socially unacceptable to smoke weed or is he a bit older and out of touch?

I’m now way overthinking this and I’m worried that people think we’re not a nice family because they can smell weed smoke. I know I shouldn’t worry what people think but it’s got under my skin! I’ve even name changed here despite being anonymous because I’m usually the nice SEN mum posting about special needs and diet.

FourTea, are you saying that a person who uses cannabis also ought to be part of the movement campaigning for it's legalisation?

BeatriceTheBeast · 08/01/2020 12:21

@AsleepAllDay

I actually don't disagree with a move towards legalisation.

But you lost all credit with me when you posted your silly Grin comment. It really isn't funny at all.
Anyone with an ounce of sense and any insight into the dangers of (currently illegal) weed, mixed with spice or super high strength and the damage that does to the user, not to mention people along the supply chain, would get that, instead of trying to dismiss perfectly sensible concerns, calling it pearl clutching with an inane grin. Embarrassed for you.

Taraohara · 08/01/2020 12:21

@AsleepAllDay

Absolutely there needs to be discussion re de criminalisation

However. As it stands it’s illegal. Therefore most people using illegal drugs will be reliant at some point on children and vulnerable people being exploited to get their fix .

FourTeaFallOut · 08/01/2020 12:22

What rhino? The question is about whether or not you would judge his illegal habit. Yes, I would judge given the social fall out. Posters can correctly point out that that would be fixed by legalising cannabis but that's not what he's doing in his garden, is it?

Comefromaway · 08/01/2020 12:27

I detest the smell and my autistic dd would be unable to ever go into the garden if she could smell it coming from next door which would be highly unfair on her.

So yes, I would probably report to the police.

TheReef · 08/01/2020 12:33

At the moment it's illegal, so yes, I do judge my neighbours when I see them smoking weed.

The chap across the road from me does exactly that. He's known as 'crack head from across the road' for that very reason.

RhinoskinhaveI · 08/01/2020 12:34

so if I understand you correctly what you are saying is that it would be ok to smoke cannabis if you were part of the campaign for legalising cannabis?
or do you mean that anyone who wants to smoke cannabis should instead campaign for the legalising of it and then smoke it after its been made legal?
My apologies if I have misinterpreted your post.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/01/2020 12:37

No. The point is that it is immaterial that this habit would not be harmful if it were legal. The point is that it is illegal and that it is socially harmful. So I do judge.

RhinoskinhaveI · 08/01/2020 12:42

it is immaterial that this habit would not be harmful if it were legal
Thank you for explaining your position FourTea, I would like to ask what, in your view, are the grounds for making cannabis illegal?
What is it about cannabis that means it should be illegal?

FourTeaFallOut · 08/01/2020 12:44

Nothing.

easyandy101 · 08/01/2020 12:47

I wouldn't judge, unless he never offered 2s

araiwa · 08/01/2020 12:47

Does he offer to share it?

It'd be a lot cooler if he did

Just legalise it and reduce pearl clutching by 95%

RhinoskinhaveI · 08/01/2020 12:48

FourTea, what you appear to be saying is, there's no reason for cannabis to be illegal but because it is illegal you are against it?
If jelly babies were made illegal would you be against the consumption of jelly babies?

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 08/01/2020 12:51

Don'tPetTheSweatyStuff If it is legalised and accepted as a medical treatment, I find it unlikely that the medical profession or the pharmaceutical industry will be pushing smoking as the preferred method of administering medicinal cannabis.

It's going to be liquids, tablets, and maybe vaping.

wheresmymojo · 08/01/2020 12:52

I'm pretty open minded but I would be judging this.

On occasion, like once or twice a year while having friends over, I wouldn't.

On a regular basis I'm afraid I would assume your DH had a drugs problem (because he does). I wouldn't be calling social services but I'd be keeping an eye out for signs the children were being put at risk - which probably says all you need to know.

Clearly your DC aren't at risk but in RL I'd be thinking there was the potential for serious problems.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/01/2020 12:52

If jelly beans were made illegal and, as a result, the supply chain of jelly beans saw an increase in street knife crime then, yes I would judge.

I'd judge anyone with a mouthful of jelly beans who was explaining how none of this woiud be a problem if they were legal because they still achieved the above jelly beans off the back of that caught supply chain.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/01/2020 12:52

Fraught

MeanMrMustardSeed · 08/01/2020 12:54

You’re married to a druggie. Of course I’d have an opinion about that

LilQueenie · 08/01/2020 12:55

So long as its not in my way I couldn't care less. I realise it can reduce anxiety in some people and reduce pain in others. Who is anyone to judge another on that.

user1471449295 · 08/01/2020 12:56

Yeah I’d look down on you.

FruitcakeOfHate · 08/01/2020 12:58

No. I wouldn't care. I have citizenship in a country where it's legal. I think it should be legalised, tbh, all 'drugs' should be, and regulated, the way alcohol and tobacco is.

RhinoskinhaveI · 08/01/2020 12:59

Thank you for outlining your position on this issue FourTea

wheresmymojo · 08/01/2020 13:01

I think a lot of younger households will be smoking weed.

Yes and I wouldn't judge students or people without kids TBH (although if they were doing it every night I'd still think they were stoners).

It's that your DH has a family that's the issue. Your DC will grow up with a father who takes illegal drugs every night in the garden.

Young people do all sorts of things before they have responsibilities.

HigherFurtherFasterBaby · 08/01/2020 13:01

I’d judge you and I’d fucking report you to. A heavy using drug addict, an occasional user, two children, one of whom is disabled?

Vile.

Petrichor11 · 08/01/2020 13:01

I would judge yes, especially since you have children.

It’s illegal and it fucking stinks!
