I go to my local co-op, about a half mile away. I have had too many years, maybe 40 or more, pushing trollys round various large supermarkets, and I used to work in the bakery in a supermarket some years ago too. And to top it all, in the 1970 era.I used to work as rep, for Schwartz herbs and spices, having to deliver their stuff to all the supermarkets in the area where I lived then.

B0bbin · 08/01/2020 18:05

I don't drive, but go to a variety of supermarkets near train station stops, near work and near home. Sometimes I go out of my way to different ones and order online from various supermarket.

DanceItOut · 08/01/2020 18:06

I go to the biggest one near me. It's only about 1 mile further than the nearest. The nearest two are Aldi and Waitrose, the Waitrose is really small so not much choice and the Aldi has a tiny car park which always has queues to get in the car park. So I go to the big Tesco Extra which is only about an extra mile away.

VerbenaGirl · 08/01/2020 18:10

I have four equidistant and do vary a lot.

Tompbabs1 · 08/01/2020 18:14

I go to whichever sm has sent me the best money of vouchers and got the cheapest petrol

Namethecat · 08/01/2020 18:16

We regularly have over a 60 mile round trip for our shopping.
Live in Cumbria , and yes we have a couple of supermarkets within 5 - 15 miles from home but they are pretty small and you can't get everything you want . So we make the longer trip once a month and top up in the others inbetween.

Drabarni · 08/01/2020 18:18

I only go when I need to as I find them very expensive.
I shop around for bargains to keep costs down. No way would I go and do a big shop at a supermarket unless of course it was Christmas.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 08/01/2020 18:19

I can't imagine the luxury of being able to choose! The nearest Aldi, Tesco or Asda is 25 miles away. We got a Lidl in our local town a few years ago, other than that it's online delivery or the very expensive Co-op. There is a Morrisons 10 miles away but I don't use it often, mainly because I would have to make a special journey and I go past Lidl on the way to work.

goose1964 · 08/01/2020 18:20

We have a small Iceland closest then about 2 mins further on we have a Waitrose and probably a similar distance but slightly different route we have a medium size Tesco. We mainly buy in Tesco but regularly do an evening run to Waitrose to see what's been reduced and rarely ever buy from Iceland.

Ayomi · 08/01/2020 18:22

I work in one of the big 4 supermarkets. Anecdotally, during December there was a marked increase in customers unfamiliar with our layout and product offer. Not exactly a large sample, but I’d not be surprised if people didn’t ‘trade up’ for their Xmas food shop

sunshine11 · 08/01/2020 18:28

Hopefully all the people worried about climate change (and that seems to be the majority based on comments on the other posts on the mail out) have given up shopping at supermarkets and are walking to their local farm shop to buy local and in season in order minimise carbon emissions as a result of fruit and veg shipped from far away shores, and packaging heavy items.

Food for thought I would have thought if one is really concerned about climate change?!

Rachel709 · 08/01/2020 18:33

We don't use our closest.

GreenTulips · 08/01/2020 18:39

Not sure there are many walkable local farm shops around here. We have a few dotted on county lanes with a plastic tin to leave the money it - more of a bus stop than a shop.

I go to Tesco medium sized and has most things. Lidl for a few bits but as I had twins they never had double trollies so I couldn’t go at all when they were babies. ASDA is too big and takes too long. Might go in the Co-OP on the way home. I usually go the the butchers once a week for sausages and chicken.

So mix and match really.

Cotswoldmama · 08/01/2020 18:44

Tesco and Waitrose are nearest but Aldi and Sainsbury’s aren’t much further we always shop at Aldi it soooo much chesper and worth the extra 3 minutes of driving.

Zzzexhaustedzzz · 08/01/2020 18:44

I don’t know why it’s even considered interesting enough to put on the news! Supermarkets that are making less profit than last year... boohoo! Making more? I just do not care!

Middersweekly · 08/01/2020 18:54

Yes I go to my local supermarket. Nice big Lidl just 2 mins away. Occasionally I go to another large supermarket as it’s on the way back from the school run. But that’s normally for specific items (they have a big gluten free range and I am a coeliac.

AliasGrape · 08/01/2020 18:57

Sainsburys is our nearest one, it’s walkable or about 5 mins drive.
We use that and the Lidl which is a 15 min drive away - Lidl more if money is tight for any reason or if we end up doing the shop at a weekend, Sainsbury’s more likely if one of us is going on the way home from work.
DP will occasionally go rogue and drive to the Morrison’s about 25 mins away as he likes their deli section and claims their own brand sparkling water is nicer than others (I can’t taste any difference). We’re spoilt for choice really and in easy reach (in car at least) of all the major supermarkets plus have a half decent village high st with grocers, butchers, fishmongers etc.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 08/01/2020 18:58

I go to tesco because it's only about 4 miles away. It's also close to Iceland and Home Bargains and they're often a lot cheaper for many of the things I buy.

There's an asda about the same distance the opposite direction but I avoid it because they never have anyone on the tills and insist on forcing you to use the self service machines that never bloody work.

LakieLady · 08/01/2020 19:03

I'm not loyal to any supermarket. I just go where I feel like shopping or based on specific items I want.

Same here.

Our nearest supermarket is Waitrose, with Aldi and Tesco just a wee bit further away. We used to do the majority of our shopping in Tesco, but they stopped stocking a lot of the things we liked, and stopped having decent offers on stuff we buy regularly. We also found that the quality of some of their stuff dropped and go there for very little these days.

I often end up driving 8 miles to a town where there's a Sainsburys and a Lidl, which covers most of the stuff we buy regularly as well as Lidl's delicious pastries. And Sainsburys do a few things that I can't get anywhere else. For small, top-up shops, we go to Waitrose. We've discovered that Waitrose "Essentials" is often as good as, if not better than, Tesco's Finest or named brands, and frequently cheaper. Their meat is fantastic, and often on good offers, eg 3 packs of steak for £10.

I used to buy meat from the butcher, but rarely bother now as Waitrose is much cheaper.

MerryDeath · 08/01/2020 19:08

no, i go to my supermarket preference/depends on what i need. the closest to me is an asda which i never go to! i mostly go to Sainsbury's but occasionally Aldi/Lidl, Waitrose or M&S.

MrsGolightyly · 08/01/2020 19:10

I go to Sainsburys, which isn't the nearest.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 08/01/2020 19:22

Nearest is Waitrose, I use it for meats and fish. Main shop is Sainsbury’s. I do like Lidl when I’m out of town but my local ones in London are horrible and overcrowded so I don’t go there.

Sara107 · 08/01/2020 19:24

I go to Sainsbury as it is the nearest and has always been, even though I’ve moved a few times. Even though an Aldi opened next door to it recently I rarely go there or anywhere else - I know my regular so well I can do the shopping really quickly, I don’t have to look for stuff or wonder if they sell something. I know the times when it will be too busy and when they won’t have any veg left. Plus I can get my petrol there as well.

wooo69 · 08/01/2020 19:48

I live in a small village without a shop, there is a small co-op about a mile away which we use for things we need now but otherwise we go to a town 8 miles away which has Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrison’s, Aldi, Iceland, Farmfoods, Home Bargains, B&M, Poundland and Bodycare all in close proximity. Can all be walked to in a few minutes from one car park. There are things we prefer from one store over the others or we know that something is significantly cheaper in one so tend to shop in all these over the course of a month.

Mumgonenuts2020 · 08/01/2020 19:50

I go online to Ocado each week book a slot early morning Saturdays, This includes everything toiletries, cleaning stuff, milk, bread, quick meals and weekend dinners such as roasts, pizzas, fajitas or Pasta dishes I unpack before everyone is up. They say there is never anything to eat which is disappointing sometimes!! I go to any other supermarket if I am out with the kids Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s, Tesco’s sometimes ALDI. Sometimes I fancy a change as online shopping can be quite boring, but it controls plastic bag buying, parking stresses, buying more than you need and coming out without you Originally went in for!! My husband goes to Sainsbury’s after work and gets the same thing every night 😄😄
