To take my handbag to bed?

hellcarryingahandbag · 04/01/2020 23:48

Hi all,
I have always put everything I will need or want in my handbag, and taken it to bed, or the room I’m going to sit in. I am not in good health, so I like to have everything with me. The thing is that I put things in my bag that I want to put in a different room, or that I want to have handy, I don’t go out with the cordless landline in my handbag or anything Grin. My grandmother has always done the same thing, and my mother thinks it’s lunacy. I am never without my handbag, as I feel better knowing everything I need is easily accessible. Are my grandmother and I right or is my mother?

It's your handbag ,your stuff, take it with you if it seems right to you.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 06/01/2020 18:59

@TildaKauskumholm blimey that’s fiendishly clever! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

GriseldaChop · 06/01/2020 19:01

I always take my bag to bed! It means I know where my keys are etc if there’s an emergency and just keeps everything in the same place. It also sits in the floor next to me when I’m on the settee! I thought everyone did it!

TildaKauskumholm · 06/01/2020 19:05

Thanks @SecondaryBurnzzz! Also my old phone and car keys next to it!

MilkTray22 · 06/01/2020 19:07

I don't think this is weird at all, my granny always did it and as someone who has cared for lots of people suffering with ill health its quite common especially when people need easy access to medications, inhalers etc.

bellocchild · 06/01/2020 19:11

I left my handbag downstairs a few years ago, and we were burgled that night...which meant we had to replace the front door locks, the car keys (expensive!), and cancel the debit and credit cards. For six months we got calls from the bank about attempts to use c/cards and cheques. Now we would probably lose mobile phones as well. It was incredibly inconvenient. I always take my bag up to the bedroom now.

Buggersticks · 06/01/2020 19:12

I do. I know too many folks who've been burgled and had handbag nicked from downstairs. That is only reason. I leave my car keys downstairs, just don't want my purse nicking with photos of my little girl in, just for sake of taking it up with me.

Tompbabs1 · 06/01/2020 19:13

I like most people have many handbags depending on what I’m wearing can’t take them all to bed

Housewife2010 · 06/01/2020 19:31

I just take the one that currently has my purse in to bed. I have lip balms and tissues by the bed anyway. It's only the purse I need but if I didn't keep it in a bag I'd lose it.

OJZJ · 06/01/2020 20:07

Serin "I could live off the contents of my car for weeks .... Me too! I had a 107 with a tiny boot so full of crap you couldn't use it people laughed at me...but never went hungry or thirsty Grinnow have a honda jazz 5 yx the bootspace and 5x the crap(and I have only had my new car a couple of months)
Mind you I have dog food, bottled water and long life snacks, toys and swim stuff in there as well as the mandatory fleeces/wellies/ spare make up for when I am running late so we could probably move to a new country and start a new life with just our passports and a full tank of petrol....

Hellcarryingahandbag my mum ALWAYS had her handbag with her, she took it to bed every night and had to have it with her in hospital against advice, we actually buried her with the full contents of her handbag (including her meds much to my sister's disgust as there were diazapam in there😂)
She was very protective of it and we were NEVER allowed in it when we were kids ....I still felt naughty going into it as an adult if she asked me to get her something out of it...
I tend to just carry a purse and phone so purse and keys get left downstairs, unless I am feeling paranoid Grin

RoyEastmannKodak · 06/01/2020 21:12

@steff13 Do you not all have attached garages? GrinGrinGrin

Lovely13 · 06/01/2020 23:25

Used to do it when child temporary became a thief. Now it would be just something else to trip over on a late night loo trip...

Angrywife · 07/01/2020 00:13

Nope. I'd much rather leave it with my purse etc downstairs where a burgled can grab it and leave rather than risk them coming upstairs to find it

GiftedFish · 07/01/2020 00:32

My mum takes her handbag to bed. Got what she needs in there. Doesn't like to leave car keys downstairs, mobile phone and purse in there. I'm the same. I don't take it from room to room through the day though.

Rachel709 · 07/01/2020 00:39

What is in the bag?

Ineke · 07/01/2020 01:22

My bag has all my credit cards and other stuff so for safety reasons it comes with me upstairs.

Merryweather80 · 07/01/2020 01:27

@hellcarryingahandbag
Hi
I'm physically disabled too. Yes, my bag is upstairs when I go to bed. I have a huge bag of medication by my bed too. I'd have to carry a sack extra for all my meds as there 22 different ones. I do take what I need for the day out with me. I leave a decoy and my keys downstairs though.
My DP takes his wallet upstairs too.
I agree with you it's handy when you struggle to move from room to room.

When in my wheelchair I always make sure my purse and phone are in my pocket as it's too easy to steal from my bag which is behind me. This is something I worry about the most as I'm literally a sitting target.

I had my bag stolen from my house once. Police said to take valuables with me to bed and leave a decoy. I've had CCTV put up since then that I can access from my phone. I can't always get out if bed unaided so if it in the house and someone knocks I can see who it's is and talk to them. Equally, if I hear a noise outside I can see from my bed what it is.

I live very rurally in a nice area but it's always best yo be safe as being physically disabled does make you more of a target. Sadly. X

THEDEACON · 07/01/2020 02:17

my handbag sits by my chair in sitting room and goes to bed at night with me I think this is because it is something my gran and mum did following a break in one night Bonus being I always know where it and it's contents are

SomewhereInbetween1 · 07/01/2020 02:52

If my back/ shoulders weren't so bad that every bag caused issues I'd carry one, and I'd carry it everywhere! I may invest in a basket just for home to keep my stuff together because I love the idea of taking it to bed and keeping all my things together!

JolieOBrien · 07/01/2020 04:59

This thread makes me smile because I have my handbag with me at all times it is permanently attached to my hand.

I also take my Ragdoll cat to bed with me .... so here I am lying in bed with a big fluffy cat and my handbag pmsl

There is no room for my husband because of this and he sleeps in the spare room!

SaphfireRose · 07/01/2020 07:00

It does sound very strange to me, almost as if you are merely a guest in your own home and so have a handbag with your things in it, as if you were staying overnight in a motel or something. I would not feel relaxed or at home tbh.

Then again, I absolutely never use a handbag even going out. I either have my purse and phone in my pockets, or in one of the green bags I carry around everywhere. I find handbags to be cumbersome and a nuisance more than anything. I have several and never, ever, use them.

Fishcakey · 07/01/2020 07:06

My Nan did that too Smile

Localocal · 07/01/2020 08:52

Quirky, but in my book quirky is good, and if it makes you happy or less stressed it seems like a positive habit to me.
