To take my handbag to bed?

hellcarryingahandbag · 04/01/2020 23:48

Hi all,
I have always put everything I will need or want in my handbag, and taken it to bed, or the room I’m going to sit in. I am not in good health, so I like to have everything with me. The thing is that I put things in my bag that I want to put in a different room, or that I want to have handy, I don’t go out with the cordless landline in my handbag or anything Grin. My grandmother has always done the same thing, and my mother thinks it’s lunacy. I am never without my handbag, as I feel better knowing everything I need is easily accessible. Are my grandmother and I right or is my mother?

I've never seen a door that required a key to lock/unlock from the inside.

This again. It’s like the people who don’t understand you can have a door without a handle.

It’s got a mortise lock. Like lots of doors do.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 05/01/2020 23:27

I've never seen a door that required a key to lock/unlock from the inside.

Confused do you not be in other peoples houses much?

I've never had a door that didn't. And I've had lots of doors.

@JolieOBrien

My rucksack/backpack isn't overly large, but they come in a variety of sizes.

I tend to opt for this over a traditional handbag as it doesn't get in the way of my crutches.

To address those in disbelief, or stating that you keep the "handbag" items in other places so can just pop and get them - for some of us it's not that simple, which is why we are taking the bag with us in the first place.

It is a lot easier and less painful for me to have gathered everything I may need of an evening before I head up to bed, and have it within easy reach in the "handbag ".

I did not take my handbag to bed pre-disablement.

Topseyt · 06/01/2020 03:30

My bag stays with me. If I am in bed it is beside the bed.

I've always done that and I would be very anxious if it was not within easy reach.

DustyMaiden · 06/01/2020 03:40

My DGM always kept her bag with her, it made me wonder if she thought we would steal her purse. Turned out she thought her DH would.

Cwenthryth DS1 does, but he's diabetic. He has a small pink satchel with his kit in.

BaolFan When I worked in a call centre and had to wear dress trousers, I couldn't find any with pockets in the shops, so I had to buy a tiny handbag. It was big enough for my money, keys and phone.

Confused do you not realize that things that are common in your country might not be common in others.

It’s got a mortise lock. Like lots of doors do.

Not so much in the US.

JolieOBrien · 06/01/2020 05:40

I have actually carried my handbag downstairs with me and it is by my desk as I am typing. I am addicted to handbags and have over 50 at the moment. I have just ordered a new one from Ted Baker because it is in the sale.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/01/2020 08:45

Really? That describes just about every front door I've had.

Eww no. The bottom of a handbag has one of the highest bacteria counts going. Mind stays in the car.
As discussed above, that is only feasible if you have an integral garage and keep your car in it. Most UK homes don't have one and, even if they have a garage of any kind, hardly anyone puts their car in it.

dottiedodah · 06/01/2020 17:35

I always take my handbag to bed with me ,just seeing it on the chair in our room reassures me .I like to know my keys ,phone and so on are nearby!

lindyloo57 · 06/01/2020 17:38

My mum did this, I never did, until this week, just heard of of a break in, the basted took the mans wallet, the car keys hanging by the back door, stole their car, so now I will always take my bag with me.

BenjiB · 06/01/2020 17:41

I take my handbag and car keys to bed.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/01/2020 17:45

I don’t follow this logic.
The burglar got the bag and went. Home owner in harmed.
If they wanted your car and purse then they would come into the bedroom where you are or turn the house upside down looking for it.

I’d sooner they got my stuff and went.

browneyes77 · 06/01/2020 17:48

I thought it was just me who did this Grin

My handbag comes to the bedroom with me when I go to bed and sits next to the bed. Then the next morning it comes back into the living room with me when I start work and goes at the side of my pop up desk (I work from home). Then by the sofa on the floor once I’m done with work.

Same if i go on holiday. Handbag next to me in the living room area, comes to bed with me when I go to bed. Only occasional exception is when I’m abroad as I might be in the pool/beach etc so may have a beach bag instead. But if I’m staying in a villa, then the handbag would follow Grin

CharlieBear20 · 06/01/2020 17:53

Ha well I don't really own a handbag? My purse, keys, fags and phone are the only necessities when leaving the house and they're kept in my son's changing bag which is always left on the buggy handle.
Am i the odd one out?

LaraYates604 · 06/01/2020 17:54

I am The Queen of my home, (Castle Doctrine) and always sleep with my handbag right next to me. YANBU.

Somemore · 06/01/2020 17:56

My nan always did this too. If it makes you happy why not Grin

beautifulstranger101 · 06/01/2020 17:57

YANBU! I bloody love my handbag- it goes everywhere I go and anyone who doesnt like it can do one Grin

Seems perfectly sensible to me to keep the things you need nearby

TakeNoSHt · 06/01/2020 18:02

Handy incase of a fire or break in to have your bag close by especially if they contain keys, tablets and your mobile. I do the same

Hally2020 · 06/01/2020 18:03

49Notagainnnn

Are you the Queen?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Cheeseislife2020 · 06/01/2020 18:03

Ok so I understand keeping medication in a bag nearby. But people saying they need their phone and keys and purse etc best them ... sorry I don’t get it, what exactly is in these bags ? I need lip balm, hand cream, some plasters Incase my shoes rub, a couple of hair bobbles and my phone. That’s it. My phone has my bank cards on. I have a purse but rarely take it anywhere. My phone stays with me at all times but apart from that I don’t know what else you’d need immediate access to ?! (Meds aside). Do you all only own one lip balm or one tube of moisturizer ?! If I’m upstairs In my house have all my makeup and cosmetics, I don’t need to take my handbag up there Incase my lips feel dry ?! What is it you’re accessing all day ?!

Roselilly36 · 06/01/2020 18:05

I would never take my handbag, car keys upto the bedroom, if we were broken into I would rather things that can be replaced be taken, than being searched for upstairs where DH, I & DC are sleeping.

ToftyAC · 06/01/2020 18:10

My mum was the same with her bag. I couldn’t be more different as I don’t use one. My pockets are usually stuffed with bits n bobs though.
