To take my handbag to bed?

Hi all,
I have always put everything I will need or want in my handbag, and taken it to bed, or the room I’m going to sit in. I am not in good health, so I like to have everything with me. The thing is that I put things in my bag that I want to put in a different room, or that I want to have handy, I don’t go out with the cordless landline in my handbag or anything Grin. My grandmother has always done the same thing, and my mother thinks it’s lunacy. I am never without my handbag, as I feel better knowing everything I need is easily accessible. Are my grandmother and I right or is my mother?

I used to leave my bag downstairs overnight until we got burgled a couple of years ago and they got away with all of my bank cards, door keys plus car keys and car. The police and SOCO all said to take bag upstairs as most burglars want to be in and out quickly. They take what they can easily find and don't go upstairs looking for stuff if they know the house is occupied. I'm still a bit dubious but have taken them at their word and take it up with me.

I was thinking about this last night actually - my Nan always had hers to hand, (maybe a hangover from air-raids during the war ?) my mum not so much. I like to have my stuff within easy reach - keys, lip balm etc, but my phone is always within an inch from my hand!

dreamingofmushrooms · 06/01/2020 18:12

My dm always slept with her handbag beside the bed. I only ever do it in hotels.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/01/2020 18:16

I do not have an upstairs, so what should I do.... Grin

Cheeseislife2020 · 06/01/2020 18:17

Oh my god also yes to previous posters who keep keys in an ACCESIBLE place. I’ve only ever lived in houses with an outside porch door then an internal door. Porch doors are locked with keys left in the door and internal doors lock automatically with a very strong Catch in my world. The catch can be ‘clicked’ before bed to secure even more. When I go to MILs it drives me INSANE that she has just one external PVC door with one lock that is opened by ‘THE KEY’ ... this magical key there are four copies of, hers, ours, DBILS and a spare. She lets herself in, locks it and puts the key well... anywhere . Bottom of handbag (very very full massive handbag full of his mystery stuff!).. top of the fridge. By the loo. On the back of the sofa. Then the key is lost for 24hrhs or so and the spare is used. The original is found and the spare put in a safe place. The cycle repeats with half hour searches for the spare key on a regular basis whilst we could all be burning to death 💀.

The other day we were staying after an Xmas meal and DH went out for a run early doors, locking the door with our key and taking it with him. I am in a huge rush to go pick DC up, as have left it late in bed, go to let myself out and keys no where to be found ... look for the spare in the little box it’s hidden in, not there, MIL wandering about trying to look in her bag, then the other bag she sometimes uses, then the fucking dining room table ... fifteen minutes later I’m out. Told DH I’m not going again unless I can have my own key.

John Lewis have lovely Coach bags half price. And yes, I take mine to bed with phone, eye drops, anadin and asthma pump all to hand.

Multigloves · 06/01/2020 18:24

@Cheeseislife2020 if you MIL will use a smart phone consider getting her a tile.

I bought one for my husband who has similar issues with losing keys, wallet etc. I'd pay 10 times what I paid for it for the amount of stress it's saved me and he's only had it since Christmas.

Runmybathforme · 06/01/2020 18:24

My bag is always with me, never given it a thought. Never has my car keys in it though. Got broken into, my car keys were in their usual place, window sill by the front door, thieving bastards took them and my car. Police said it was the best thing as the scumbags were in and out of the house quickly ( I was asleep upstairs ). They said always leave your keys where the thieves can easily get them or they’ll come looking for them. First place they’ll look is for your handbag, in your bedroom.

HollowTalk · 06/01/2020 18:28

If people pay using their phones, won't any burglars need to come into the bedroom to find the phones?

I leave my handbag in the living room - I assume that would be the first place they'd look.

This thread is making me very nervous now, though.

Cheeseislife2020 · 06/01/2020 18:29

@Multigloves funny you say that I got DH a tile last year because he loses his phone constantly and he keeps it in a case with bank cards, gym card, work id in... He does this thing where he takes the phone out of the case to take it somewhere when he doesn’t want to take all the cards but then he loses the case with all the cards in!

Cheeseislife2020 · 06/01/2020 18:29

@HollowTalk they could come into the bedroom to look for phones yeah. But you need fingerprint ID for Apple Pay.

Multigloves · 06/01/2020 18:31

@Cheeseislife2020

Oh dear, in that case string through both arms of his jacket like a kid with mittens. It's the only choice left to you I'm afraid.

FelicisNox · 06/01/2020 18:34

YANBU.

My handbag sits on a chair in my bedroom and my phone goes where I go.

I don't leave any valuables where they can be seen by anyone looking in.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2020 18:35

I don't have a handbag.

...and my car isn't full of crap either - do I win?

Gilld69 · 06/01/2020 18:37

my mum always took her bag . i take my phone it has all my cards and important stuff in it and anything else important i need i take up so why not x

HollowTalk · 06/01/2020 18:37

Thanks, @Cheeseislife2020, I didn't know that as I don't use it.

cheninblanc · 06/01/2020 18:38

I take my handbag to bed!

TildaKauskumholm · 06/01/2020 18:42

I always take mine upstairs at night, but cunningly I leave a stunt handbag in the kitchen, in case of fecking burglars.

Housewife2010 · 06/01/2020 18:43

I always take my handbag to bed - I need my purse nearby incase I want to shop in bed. I always keep my car and house keys by the front door. My keys are left in the door overnight - I wouldn't like to be locked in with no keys available if the house sets on fire in the night!

SteelRiver · 06/01/2020 18:47

My bag is pretty much always with me! It sits at the side of my bed at night. I love my bag collection and don't like to be parted from my bag of the day. Tissues, lip balm, phone, medications etc are kept in whichever bag I'm using at the time.

TildaKauskumholm · 06/01/2020 18:48

Why would the bottom of a handbag have one of the highest bacteria counts going? What on earth do you do with it?

ClownsandCowboys · 06/01/2020 18:48

I don't really use a handbag. I put keys, cards and phone in my pockets. I actually hate bags.

I definitely don't carry enough stuff from room to room to need a bag. I put stuff in my pockets. My mum has a Mary Poppins bag. She has everything and sometimes has two bags. Always drives me insane. There is just no need for all that stuff.

namechangeididtoo · 06/01/2020 18:52

I take my bag to bed too as it has car keys etc in and there are lots of burglaries where they take your keys to steal your car

somm · 06/01/2020 18:52

I have loads of handbags - I never take one to bed. However I do take a greyhound with me :-))
