To take my handbag to bed?

hellcarryingahandbag · 04/01/2020 23:48

Hi all,
I have always put everything I will need or want in my handbag, and taken it to bed, or the room I’m going to sit in. I am not in good health, so I like to have everything with me. The thing is that I put things in my bag that I want to put in a different room, or that I want to have handy, I don’t go out with the cordless landline in my handbag or anything Grin. My grandmother has always done the same thing, and my mother thinks it’s lunacy. I am never without my handbag, as I feel better knowing everything I need is easily accessible. Are my grandmother and I right or is my mother?

My handbag lives by my bed. I've never thought of leaving it anywhere else! But I live in a small flat, so that's its 'home'. I don't need it during the night except for my asthma inhaler, which lives inside it. Perhaps that's why I've always put it there.

I've never thought about this before but thinking about leaving it in the living room or hall while i go to bed makes me feel anxious! Not just because of my inhaler, but I like knowing that my keys, purse, even diary are beside me. Perhaps I am an old granny after all!

Incidentally, why do people put their keys by the door? It doesn't seem very safe to me.

CakeandCustard28 · 05/01/2020 15:21

My nan does this. Grin I just shove everything in my cardy pockets though, no time for a handbag.

  1. In case of a fire etc the keys are where the children can find them in the dark and right beside the exit to get out even without me there to show them.

  2. if someone wants my car I want them in and out as quick as possible - I don’t want them waking up my children to get them.

About a decade ago, at a local Met Police event we were given a key ring saying Take Me To Bed in fluorescent yellow for our car keys as a reminder to not leave them downstairs.

I saw those, they were around at the same time as the fire brigade had a campaign going to leave your keys near the door in an agreed place so you all know where they are.

HepzibahGreen · 05/01/2020 16:28

My keys are always in the door. You're more likely to die in a fire because you can't get out in time than at the hands of a burglar.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/01/2020 16:56

My keys are on a magnetic hook on the metal door. I want to be able to get out in case of fire.

Hoik · 05/01/2020 16:59

My keys are on a hook next to the door in case of a fire, our letterbox locks and cant be opened from the outside so I'm not worried about anyone stealing them via the slot.

mynameiswah · 05/01/2020 17:04

@WireBrushAndDettolMaam Ah I don't have kids and that makes sense.

stripeypillowcase · 05/01/2020 17:14

we have bolts in the door, so they are easy to open in an emergency without having to fumble for a key.

BaolFan · 05/01/2020 17:53

Keys are on a hook near the door. We don't have a letterbox and they aren't visible from the window.

I am genuinely agog at the amount of stuff people carry around with them in their bags - do get shoulder and back pain?!

fruitpastille · 05/01/2020 18:13

I have never known of anyone who takes their handbag to bed with them.

I only take mine with me when I'm leaving the house. It usually lives in the hall. At home I would often have my phone and a tissue in my pocket but wouldn't carry anything else with me. Hand cream, make up, painkillers live in the bathroom. My house isn't so big that I can't fetch something if I need it!

Mother87 · 05/01/2020 19:08

Another one here...it's generally in the same room as me at home & on the floor near the bed every nightGrin

hellcarryingahandbag · 05/01/2020 21:10

My handbag and I are having an early nightGrin

I don’t do this but I’m now wondering why on Earth I don’t?!

Beebumble2 · 05/01/2020 21:24

I always take mine to the bedroom and put it by the side of my bed. Always have done.
Car keys in a drawer in the kitchen.

JaceLancs · 05/01/2020 21:33

Handbag follows me everywhere including up to bed
We have separate keys for front and back doors in case of fire

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2020 21:49

My phone lives in my bumbag, which is why it usually sneaks into bed with me.
cba to unpack it every night

My bumbag has 7 zippered compartments, which act as a filing system for the contents
Otherwise I'd have everything I need - but could never find it when it is needed

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 05/01/2020 22:47

I don't have a handbag.
I live in jeans so my wallet and phone are in the back pockets. In the front pockets I keep coins, a torch, a dog whistle, a pen and a Leatherman pen knife.
Not sure what I would put in a handbag?

ooooohbetty · 05/01/2020 22:54

Yanbu. A friend was burgled and they took her bag that had keys, purse, cards, ID in it. She'd left it downstairs. Police said always take your bag into your bedroom at night.

steff13 · 05/01/2020 22:58

I'd rather they have my bag easily accessable in hopes that they will take it and go, rather than having it in my bedroom and risking them looking for it. Everything in my purse can be replaced.

steff13 · 05/01/2020 23:00

I've never seen a door that required a key to lock/unlock from the inside.

Cwenthryth · 05/01/2020 23:03

Really? Isn’t that..... most doors?

Pipstelle · 05/01/2020 23:06

Eww no. The bottom of a handbag has one of the highest bacteria counts going. Mind stays in the car.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 05/01/2020 23:08

Our front door has a mortice lock. It has to be locked with a key, either from the inside or out. The advantage is that you can't accidentally lock yourself out, the disadvantage is that we often forget to lock it when we are home of an evening.

riotlady · 05/01/2020 23:09

I don’t do this but I do carry my phone, lip balm and water bottle around with me room to room so maybe I should!
