To ask if anyone has ever had to drink this vile stuff?

I know this isn't really an AIBU topic, but it seems to get the most response when posting here hence my reason for doing so. I have a colonoscopy booked for the morning and I have to drink 2 litres of the most vile drink known as Moviprep. It's supposed to clear you out in order for the bowel to be completely empty for the procedure, but I just don't think I can drink it all. I have until around midnight to consume it but it's soooooo vile, it's already making me heave when I take a mouthful. I hold my nose when I sip it so I can't taste it fully, however, the last sip made me heave so much that I think it's going to come up rather than 'go downwards' to do the job it was meant for. Has anyone else ever had to drink this and if so, are there any tips on what I can do to get it down?

Laylight I requested one because over the last several months I've had what I can only describe as very urgent and "you need to go now" shits. Sometimes after I have eaten, i will need to go straight away for perhaps 6 or 7 times with maybe 10 minutes in between each poo. Sorry to be so graphic, but they're always very loose nowadays and I hardly ever have a solid plop. Anyway, I booked a Dr's appt to discuss this, but the main thing is that my Dad had colon cancer many years ago and ended up needing a colostomy bag, which he did get reversed after a year, but then ultimately died when the cancer metastasized to his major organs about two years after.

@Walnutwhipster can you get virtual ones on the NHS?

Laylight · 04/01/2020 23:34

I was worried about a bowel obstruction stopping the poo’ing but that sounds unlikely. Any progress yet?!

Brittany2019 · 04/01/2020 23:36

Best of luck for tomorrow, Op.

I have one myself next Thursday. Can i ask, did people take the day before off, as eithrr a sick day or holiday? I work at home, but i have to start drinking the Vileness at 14h, so im not sure ill be able to get mych work done in rhe afternoon if im stuck to the toilet. Sad

panicovernow · 04/01/2020 23:36

If you feel like the prep isn't working well you should drink more water. You're not going to get a great nights sleep but you don't want to have to do this again if it's not clean enough. Good luck

Laylight · 04/01/2020 23:36

The prep is the same for a virtual colonoscopy - the bowel still needs to be clear

Laylight · 04/01/2020 23:37

@Brittany2019 I work from home but when it kicks in you won’t want to do much. I always feel rubbish, a bit fluey and of course needing the toilet

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 23:38

Nothing, Laylight I'm going to read the instructions to see if it mentions ringing them if no response after 5 hours. There's gurgling going on, but no shit nor trumps (I won't trust them, I know!)

Good luck for the colonoscopy OP. I knew what this would be about before I read it! I had mine years ago and still remember the weird silky/salty weird texture. Lemon squash helped! I watched Frozen during the couple of hours I took it and it worked, and it makes watching the film a bit traumatic 😂 I just remember lying there cramping and gurgling and just wanting to sleep and Elsa is banging on about ‘let it go’ - IM TRYING!

Brittany2019 · 04/01/2020 23:41

Thanks @Laylight Sounds like the day off would be a good idea so. I can't imagine trying to do a conference call in that state. GrinEnvy

myrtleWilson · 04/01/2020 23:43

I too knew what this was going to be from the title

can I say thank you to @Moviprep who is an endoscopy nurse who joined the thread to help out but am not sure anyone really noticed them - if you did an AMA thread I'm sure there would be loads of interest but thank you anyway!

Good luck colonoscopy-types tomorrow!

TheMemoryLingers · 04/01/2020 23:44

You need to be off sick from the point you start taking the prep - you can't predict when your first toilet dash will be, but from then on you'll be backwards and forwards to the loo every five minutes, so even if you were brave enough to stay at work, you wouldn't get anything done.

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 23:47

Myrtle yes I did notice the endoscopy nurse, Moviprep, and she/he said a lot that helped, but my initial question was how to drink the foul potion without puking and not even a nurse can help me with that !!

theoriginalmadambee · 04/01/2020 23:47

@el1zabeth
I had a different product, but have just asked dh. He had moviprep twice in the evening, nothing happened! He called the after hours doctor, who told him to drink a lot more fluids... Nothing. Next morning he started cannot remember exactly when, but colonoscopy staff said he was soo nice and empty Confused.

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 23:52

Madambee thank you, I will go and drink loads of water now.

I'm off to bed soon but will update here tomorrow to share if my colon was clear enough and if so, what the results are too if they tell me after it's done.

What happens if you cannot actually tolerate the Moviprep? Is there an alternative?

I wondered this too. I drunk half of mine and it didn’t work on my bowels at all but before I got the chance to drink more I ended up with the most violent projectile vomiting ever. I physically couldn’t finish it. I can’t remember much about what they did about it as I had sedation; just the endoscopy I was having only, I think. But I wondered what I should do if it should arise another time. I remember the nurse being pretty cross with me over it, saying I should not have vomited and should have finished it, to the extent I was almost in tears and said I couldn’t do anything about it, i just couldn’t keep it down. It was the most awful involuntary projectile vomiting I’ve ever had. I never, ever, want to do that again.

OP, I’m sure my reaction was quite unusual, given how cross they were over it. They clearly thought I just hadn’t bothered. Best of luck for it. The actual procedure if you have sedation you won’t remember anyway and is fine.

theoriginalmadambee · 05/01/2020 00:01

Good luck

TARSCOUT · 05/01/2020 00:07

Knew this was going to be moviprep! I absolutely refused to take it again so got picolax the next time. Almost as vile but much lesser quantity!! Good luck !

HairyDogsOfThigh · 05/01/2020 00:08

I've just read the whole thread and I can't believe how invested i am in you having a poo, op.
Good luck tomorrow, i hope you have good news and the problem is easily sorted.

Rangoon · 05/01/2020 00:17

I had a colonography but apparently the prep is the same. I had gastrografin and it was 100ml in the morning and evening and clear fluids for the 24 hours prior to the procedure. I'm not in the UK though. Litres of stuff sounds awful.

WoahBodyforrrm · 05/01/2020 00:22

You might want to keep the sudocreme at hand 😬

Good luck for tomorrow (and tonight 💩)

isshoes · 05/01/2020 00:25

Another one who knew it was going to be this as soon as I saw the title. I've had two different versions of this stuff before, both horrible, but one was worse. I felt like my body was trying to reject it every time I swallowed some because it was so disgusting it thought it was poison! My sympathies 🤢

TheMemoryLingers · 05/01/2020 00:28

What happens if you cannot actually tolerate the Moviprep?

A friend of mine was in this position and was given something else which was much lower volume - I can't remember what it was, but this is in the UK. She wasn't given it until she'd explained that the Moviprep made her vomit - maybe it's more expensive and only prescribed as a last resort.

Baileys4two · 05/01/2020 00:37

I finished the 1st moviprep around 10pm, and have gone once a bit but not since. Have also had almost a litre of fluids extra to that so far. Don't know if this is normal?

el1zabeth · 05/01/2020 00:47

Baileys I'm still up and have been to the toilet a little bit, but not the massive explosion I was expecting/hoping for. There's a lot of stomach gurgling going on now and I still feel very bloated and nauseous. I have 10 hours until the procedure so I'm hopeful that during the night I will have emptied all that is needed for the doctor to be able to do it properly. I'm still struggling with the last bit which I will go and do now, along with the 500ml of fresh water too. Here's hoping it goes well for both of us tomorrow.
