Hello,

What do you think of the policy that requires shops to ask for ID from anybody who looks like they are under the age of 25 when they buy age-restricted products?

It's stupid because all people have to do to get around it is to just put the money on the counter and walk out with the item they are buying. But the notices are still nonetheless very unpleasant to have to look at.

What do you think?

@Wayland1 1) I've never heard of anyone going to prison for selling an age-restricted product to a minor.

So,i know people who where sacked and fined because they sole alcohol to a minor.

dreamingofmushrooms · 06/01/2020 16:41

YCAWS.

SerendipityJane · 06/01/2020 16:42

Oh FGS, you can't just BAN everything you don't like

Who says I don't like alcohol Smile ?

But discussions like this do tend to highlight the rather arbitrary nature of banning things in general. Which then has a bearing on the whole nature of respect for the law and society in general. Which was my point.

A glass of wine with a good meal is probably the epitome of civilised behaviour. The Romans weren't all bad, you know.

Chemenger · 06/01/2020 16:42

In the US I’ve been ID’d fairly frequently (mid 50’s) certainly at outdoor events there is a specific enclosure where alcohol is served and there is definitely no entry without ID. U.K. passports are fine U.K. driving licences not always accepted. It’s the land of the free, not compulsory to carry ID but no alcohol if you don’t. Young people are always ID’d in restaurants and bars.

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 06/01/2020 16:49

A lot of those without IDs are obviously pretty old

Thanks for that, I'm only 40 Grin

Don't drive, don't go abroad. The one time photo ID would have been really useful it would have needed to be a Passport or a full driving license. A provisional wouldn't have been accepted so that wasn't an option and a Passport would have taken too long so I had to jump through ridiculous hoops that involved getting a photo signed by someone I'd never even met before.

If we all need photo ID they should just introduce ID cards instead of this 'you don't need it but you do really' pigs ear of a compromise.

Do you remember that show Ten Years Younger and they would take some poor woman out onto the streets to guess her age? Then they would give her a makeover and knock ten years off?

Nothing to do with this thread it just reminded me. I am only still here waiting for the name of the shop. Grin

Starisnotanumber · 06/01/2020 16:53

It's not just alcohol that is age related for sales purposes its things like aspirin, paracetamol cinema admissions age appropriate dvds and computer games.
It is difficult for people on low incomes to afford to get id the minimum you need is a provisional driving licence which costs 34.00.
A young person on universal credit or minimum wage should be able to get suitable id that's suitable for id only not driving or travelling abroad which to some people are a distant dream when you are struggling for food

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2020 16:57

TheFoxAndTheMole · 06/01/2020 17:04

Gosh, the world is literally on fire and here is a mumsnetter complaining that signage helping to prevent children from buying a harmful substance isn't pretty enough.

What a gloriously bonkers world!

FishCanFly · 06/01/2020 17:08

The thing about paracetamol i completely don't get. Don't under-18s ever get sick?

Starisnotanumber · 06/01/2020 17:10

Just maybe the teetotal none smoking 19 year old has a headache and wants a pack of paracetamol or a set of cutlery including knives it's no go without ID.

SerendipityJane · 06/01/2020 17:11

The thing about paracetamol i completely don't get. Don't under-18s ever get sick?

They also have poor impulse control ....

Starisnotanumber · 06/01/2020 17:19

There impulse control obviously is improved if they have a passport or driving licence with them.

Paracetamol overdose is a bad way to go and most overdoses are spur of the moment, impulsive decisions. Making it harder to have large amounts at home or to buy large amounts quickly has reduced the number of overdoses.

FishCanFly · 06/01/2020 17:19

Its also not that strong of a drug that doesn't require prescription.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 06/01/2020 17:27

Paracetamol isn't legally age-restricted, but supermarkets tend to have a store policy that they will only sell to over-sixteens.

These threads give a clue as to why.

Yet few people realise it is one of the most common drugs to overdose on and was the drug of choice for many people attempting suicide especially young people. But what people don't realise is that many paracetamol overdoses are irreversible so if it was just a moment of madness because of a crisis in thier life or a cry for help it was actually fatal.
It's a horrible way to die.

It doesn't actually take much more than the prescribed daily dose to cause irreversable liver damage depending on body weight and metabolism. It is one of the highest reasons for liver transplants in the UK.

TheFoxAndTheMole · 06/01/2020 17:56

Making it harder to have large amounts at home or to buy large amounts quickly has reduced the number of overdoses.

As has selling them in blister packs only, apparently. Takes more time to pop them out therefore more time to change your mind, I think.

I find that fascinating!

TheFoxAndTheMole · 06/01/2020 17:58

Most have a responsible adult who can buy and dole out appropriately.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2020 18:11

There is more of an issue with an education system that doesn't promote and teach critical thinking skills, debate and formulating a coherent written account of something.

Random non sequiturs an argument does not make.

DoTheNextRightThing · 06/01/2020 18:14

I used to work in a cigarette kiosk and nobody ever just walked away. I wouldn't have let them for a start.

It's a good law. I can't believe you're whining about unpleasant posters.

FishCanFly · 06/01/2020 19:46

Yes, its a first world problem, but its because we don't appreciate inconveniences, however minor, when we're doing nothing wrong.
If your livelihood absolutely depends on pestering people of all ages, you don't have to be a cow about it.

SheChoseDown · 06/01/2020 20:26

In my supermarket we get checked on regularly. Someone comes in looking underage and attempts to buy something age restricted, we then get a report back. We're not as strict as Morrisons who seem to ID everyone haha, but it's such an important (and cruitally legal!) requirement.
People are fine about it.

SheChoseDown · 06/01/2020 20:29

Also, we ID before getting the cigarettes out of the cabinet. If someone tried walking away with alcohol, knives, energy drinks(!) etc we'd immediately contact the supervisor, manager etc as its theft.
