To ask if you think there will be a second coming?

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 18:29

This is inspired by the new Netflix show Messiah, about a second coming.

I really hope this doesn’t upset or offend anyone and people can share their beliefs and thoughts openly and without prejudice or judgement as I know this can be very sensitive for some people.

Following on from —binge— watching this series I did a bit of googling and it seems both Christian and Muslim regions predict this. (Not researched if any others do yet)

I’m not very well informed about different regions but the concept of this programme has really interested me, I find it fascinating that this could, maybe? actually happen!

Do you think there could be a second coming?!

(And what would it actually mean for the world? A rise in consciousness? Mass healing???)

YABU - no don't be so daft!
YANBU - yes, this could happen, why not?!

@roisinagusniamh You haven't upset me. Nor do we make assumptions.

You have, however, made the enormous assumption that we don't check how people prefer to be referred to. We do, and most here prefer to be referred to as ladies. If your mum didn't like it, she would never be called that.

I have no idea why you have such a be in your bonnet about the term, and have no idea why you see fit to mock me for providing the best care I can to people, in line with their preferences. It speaks volumes about you and derails the thread.

roisinagusniamh · 05/01/2020 13:00

Of course, I am pleased to see you have learned not to automatically call elderly women ‘ladies’.
Yes, let’s stop derailing this thread.

Back to the OP’s question.
No, I don’t think there will be a second coming.
I believe that a man named Jesus did exist.
He was a rebel, had lots of followers, was bit of a Derren Brown character (as someone upthread said) but that’s all.
He’s not coming back because he is dead.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 05/01/2020 13:11

@roisinagusniamh why have you derailed yet another thread by discussing gender when it wasnt the intended point.

Please, please just start your own thread on the topic as you seem really keen to discuss it.

Luckystar777 · 05/01/2020 13:20

No problem @sirching, I understand.

Prettyvase · 05/01/2020 15:46

It is very arrogant for any human to scoff at what others believe.

There are many "senses" of which humans only have a limited understanding.

Instinct, a 6th sense, quantum physics, consciousness, unconsciousness, what is tangible/ intangible, what happened before the big bang ...many things can not be deduced by scientific reasoning.

Many scientists believe in God.

What is interesting is we all have different takes on the same reality, no 2 people ever have the exact experience so while some may view the second coming as already happening with the onset of catastrophic world events; others experiencing the same world events but with a different opinion might have not been aware of the "signs".

We choose what we believe and that ties in with us being given free will.

Humans I believe were deliberately programmed not to fully understand and our imagination is such a powerful force, it can even be said we are all messiahs in our own right Grin

speakout · 05/01/2020 17:02

Humans I believe were deliberately programmed not to fully understand

By what or whom?

Butterfly98 · 05/01/2020 17:14

@roisinagusniamh you are simply a very rude person with a large chip on your shoulder / hang ups about something. Why say 'sorry I've upset you' to @SirChing and then demean her by saying 'Of course, I am pleased to see you have learned not to automatically call elderly women ladies'. You make it sound like you've educated @SirChing when it's clearly you who lacks a proper education and you need to start learning fast. Manners would be a good start!

Walkingdeadfangirl · 05/01/2020 17:21

"If you choose not too follow Jesus in end times (if that happens) the alternative is to be left with Satan."

We dont get to choose our beliefs, either you believe something exists or you don't. So how can someone who doesn't believe in Jesus follow him? Its like saying you should choose to believe in and follow the unicorn that lives in the sky. You could lie and pretend you do but you would be lying.

So if their was a second coming and we were 'left' with Satan it would be because Jesus had chosen that, as lots of people like me have no option to follow anyone. And should Jesus/Satan ever give me the option then I would need some info as to which one was the best choice because as it stands the God of the Bible sounds like a pretty dodgy guy to follow.

Rosehip10 · 05/01/2020 17:25

Religions are a political construct to help rulers control the masses.

SirChing · 05/01/2020 17:54

@Butterfly98 That's very sweet of you and I thought the same regarding the "learned" comment, but couldn't be arsed to address it Grin

SirChing · 05/01/2020 18:03

@Walkingdeadfangirl

I am confused what you mean re we don't get to choose our beliefs. No-one else can decide those for us, so it has to come from within.

I didn't believe originally. It was by reading stuff like a BBC book about the historical evidence for Jesus, and the context of his actions in HIS time, rather than as we would interpret them within our current cultural context, which swayed me.

It wasn't some 'happy clappy' conversion thing for me. It was by finding out things like 'virgin' being a young woman, and why people added wine to water in those days which changed my mind.

Eventually my heart felt that it was true, and that was it. It isn't necessarily an out of the blue thing that can just be decided upon one day.

babba2014 · 05/01/2020 18:13

@Madhairday only just saw your tag.
You're welcome. :)

speakout · 05/01/2020 18:15

SirChing

But by your own admission your faith was an emotional thing-my heart felt that it was true.

Faith is just that- not a rational decision based on evidence or lack of- if it was an evidence based decision, no one would be religious, and no one would need "faith" in order to hold that position.

Faith is believing despite no evidence- and an emotional response, not an intellectual one.

Similar to falling in love. We can't decide who to fall in love with- a person may tick all the boxes on paper, but we can't choose how we feel.
Faith is the same thing.

It would be impossible for me to believe in god, however hard I tried.

SirChing · 05/01/2020 18:33

@speakout Sorry, maybe I didn't explain myself very well. I was trying to say that I started out from the same position as you.

Neither my head nor my heart believed. As I read more, my head started to understand that there is lots in the Bible that didn't make sense to me NOW, but does when looked at in a historical context. The more I learned, the more I thought "oh, this isn't quite the bunkum that I thought it was".

Eventually, through reading so much, I decided to start chatting to God myself in a kind of "hedging my bets" way. And eventually, I realised that what had started in my head had transferred to my heart.

KindnessCrusader · 05/01/2020 18:47

Absolutely, yes!

Butterfly98 · 05/01/2020 19:12

@SirChing you're welcome! I believe everyone is entitled to their own unique opinion and I just can't stand bullies and people who belittle others. Frankly, it says more about their insecurities than anything else!!
I admire anyone (like yourself) who has worked with mentally ill people as it's a difficult job and sometimes dangerous as well. In my opinion people like you have a soulfulness to them that doesn't exist in others, I can't explain it properly!

roisinagusniamh · 05/01/2020 19:36

Butterfly98
You're funny 😅

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 05/01/2020 19:44

@roisinagusniamh ive seen you on two threads now and all you've done is pick holes in peoples beliefs and attempt to belittle people. On both threads you've been called out for it. What exactly is your problem?

CustardDream · 05/01/2020 20:06

I wonder what most people would think if I started worshipping Zeus. 🤔

speakout · 05/01/2020 20:14

Sirching

Neither my head nor my heart believed.

Your head does not have to believe though- that's my point.
We come to logical conclusions based on evidence.

I started out from the same position as you. I doubt that. You don't know anything of my journey.

speakout · 05/01/2020 20:17

CustardDream

I doubt anyone would care if you started worshipping Zeus.

I would support your right to worship who you please, as long as it does not impact me.

Which is why I have an issue with christianity.

ChestnutSmoothie · 05/01/2020 20:19

How extraordinarily arrogant it is when religious people demand “respect” for their beliefs.

Does this work for all beliefs, or just yours? Flat Earthers? Holocaust Deniers? 9\11 & Moon Landing Conspiracy Theorists? Anti-Vaxxers? Climate Change Deniers? Do we have to “respect” that shite?

If you are going to publicly announce that you think the universe works a certain way & you rely on logical fallacies and a poor understanding of science & history to make your case, then expect someone to point out where you’ve gone wrong.

If you can’t cope with that, then why engage in a conversation about it at all?

“How dare you not respect my belief that a dead Jewish preacher telepathically communicates with me from Heaven & that a collection of ramblings written by desert dwellers from the Bronze Age better explains reality than all of the scientists from the past 250 years” is nothing more than an effort to stop better informed people from embarrassing you.

Any belief worth having should stand up to rigorous scrutiny. The Christian belief system (and all others in existence) simply doesn’t which is why censorship via shame is utilised.

SirChing · 05/01/2020 20:21

@Butterfly98 That is such a lovely thing to say. Making me blush now Blush Thank you Flowers

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 05/01/2020 20:25

Maybe it's Greta Thunberg.

Swisskit · 05/01/2020 20:26

No. It's all nonsense.
