Having a baby who sleeps through noise is just luck

Hustssleeping · 02/01/2020 23:59

My friends new baby will only sleep in perfect silence. Which means a family tiptoeing around with white noise on when they want to whisper. It seems crazy but I remember doing the same with my first.
Is it just luck if your baby sleeps through any noise or is there a trick to it? She desperately wants to know as her DSS comes EOW and she feels bad asking him to be quiet- she knows its important it's his house too..
So
IABU there is a way of teaching babies to sleep through noise (if so- share the magic please!)
IANBU- it's just luck

Luckily I am not having more. So I can carry on being very smug 😂

HowDoIhelp321 · 03/01/2020 08:26

20 years since you had a baby @miniGuinness? That makes sense.

HowDoIhelp321 · 03/01/2020 08:27

And yes @MiniGuinness is totally misunderstanding my post.
I understood yours with great clarity. It was funny!

randomsabreuse · 03/01/2020 08:28

I think a bit of both. We were in the middle of major house renovation (including stairs) when DC1 was born. We also have noisy neighbours - parties in garden until early hours. She sleeps very well once she's gone and goes back to sleep.

DC2 also sleeps well once down, needs more dark/quiet to go down - any only wakes if he has a need. Will sleep through the odd poo nappy change and go straight back to sleep if slightly roused. With DC1 around absolute quiet wasn't a thing.

Neither have been great nappers though- DC1 specialised in random floor naps and any hint of illness and DC2 needs to nap on a person.

neverhadanymarblestolose · 03/01/2020 08:32

Pure luck I believe. My first child can sleep through me vacuuming her room with a light on! My second child can wake from hearing a light switch being quietly turned off in a other room. Both always been that way since birth.

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 08:36

Does it change then? Babies sleep patterns?

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 08:40

20 years since you had a baby @miniGuinness? That makes sense. Yes since my FIRST, (as previously written) although it does make a lot of sense because parents were a lot more relaxed back then.

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/01/2020 08:46

Except for that one parent who you felt was neurotic before your first was born?

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 08:47

Yes that one parent. Are you not actually reading what I have written 😂 Or just sleep deprivation?

hazeyjane · 03/01/2020 08:48

Does it change then? Babies sleep patterns?

My mum says that my sister (born 1965) was also woken by the slightest noise despite best efforts...so in this highly logical, thoroughly researched longitudinal study of 2 babies - no it doesn't change, and all babies are different.

mogtheexcellent · 03/01/2020 08:52

Pure luck. DD slept through at 5 weeks and still a very good sleeper. She doesnt need a blackout curtain and she sleeps through next doors permanent 7pm DIY noise.

It sometimes takes ages for her to go to sleep though. But personally I would take and good nights sleep over a decent sex life any day, DH may disagree though.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 03/01/2020 08:53

Hazey my mum says one of my siblings was too (second child, born in the 80s).

I think parents have probably been the same throughout the modern era, but the internet makes us more aware of the extremes etc.

Sayhellotothethings · 03/01/2020 08:54

Just luck.

I have a few family members who think babies shoulf always sleep through noise so will sit next to sleeping DD and shout. I really appreciate it. I will get my own back one day

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 08:55

sorry Ivinghoe, I completely missed this. What you are telling people who have babies who require silence despite their best efforts to maintain normal levels of noise is that you think they are lying No I am absolutely not saying people are lying, I am answering the Ops original question about whether it is luck and I do not believe it is. And you can have a completely different belief to me because your experience is different. See, that's how these things work. 😂

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 03/01/2020 08:58

crosses fingers miniguinness one day has a grandchild who wakes at a pin drop

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/01/2020 08:59

Nah she’d still blame the parents

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 09:01

Why would that bother me NoIDont...? I won't be responsible for it. And I am not blaming parents, are you always this touchy love?

hazeyjane · 03/01/2020 09:03

@MiniGuinness I am answering the Ops original question about whether it is luck and I do not believe it is. ....even when it is down to a random chromosomal difference like my ds (whose sleep disorder and sensory issues are part of his genetic condition)?

bananahood · 03/01/2020 09:03

It's luck. DD1 didn't sleep well, DD2 slept through from 8 weeks. Didn't do anything differently. If I'd had DD2 first I'd have thought I was an excellent parent and been very smug Grin

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/01/2020 09:06

Touchy Grin

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 09:06

I am not quite sure what you are saying Hazey, there is a reason your child is not a good sleeper. So again it is not down to chance/luck/etc.

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 09:07

Or sleep deprivation? They will be teenagers soon enough! Then you can never rouse them!

MiniGuinness · 03/01/2020 09:08

That was to ivinghoe

HowDoIhelp321 · 03/01/2020 09:10

Why would would what bother you? I'm not touchy, I've genuinely laughed out loud at your posts.
The latest one was fab, parents being more relaxed back then. Love it! 😂😂

FizzyIce · 03/01/2020 09:11

It’s not luck ,you just don’t tip toe around them .
I’d you get them used to sleeping in complete silence then that’s what they’ll become accustomed too.
If dd or ds napped then we’d carry on as normal whether that’s talking , watching tv or cleaning .
Incidentally though ,dd especially was never put back in the bedroom for naps , she would usually sleep in her baby rocker/ vibrating chair and she always went to sleep when she chose too , not designated ‘nap time’
