To take my 22year old dd to gp?

SueDoeName · 31/12/2019 17:48

My dd found a lump in her groin 18 months ago. She went to doctors and they said it was a swollen lymph node probably caused by infection.

She still has it 18 months later and it's got bigger.

She is always ill. Always got a cold or ulcers in her throat or throat infection. She loses weight despite eating really well. (More than me !)
She is always tired . Looks washed out . She is also anaemic . (Confirmed)
She's been back to the doctors twice - she is very sensible and grounded and has told me she's worried about lymphoma. The doctors dismissed her saying "google doesn't have a degree "
She is worried. I am now worried she has been referred for a scan but will take 4-6 weeks and then she has to await results before getting referred for biopsy.

I want to go to gp now with her and ask about a private referral and timescales. They aren't taking her seriously.

Aibu? I don't usually interfere but this seems like one time I need to. She needs someone a bit bolshy to fight her corner .

This time I'll go full pelt medical negligence if they keep refusing her and if it ever turns out to be something.

I don't blame you. This is dreadful treatment. I hope its nothing concerning.

YeOldeTrout · 02/01/2020 21:31

It's an enlarged lymph node . This we've been told

But you disbelieve what you've been told, right?
You want A&E to disbelieve that diagnosis & test for other things, right?

Lolwhat · 02/01/2020 21:33

I had a lump in my groin and it went away in 3 months max, if it’s getting bigger and antibiotics haven’t touched it I would deffo go with her to fight her corner. I’m 20 and my mum comes to all my appointments so I don’t get fobbed off

TatianaLarina · 02/01/2020 21:39

Enlarged lymph node isn’t really a diagnosis it’s a description of a symptom.

The question is why it’s enlarged. If it was just that in insolation there would be no real cause for concern, but in the context of her other symptoms, at this point, after 18 months, lymphoma needs to be ruled out along with a whole lot of other things.

nocoolnamesleft · 02/01/2020 21:41

*It's an enlarged lymph node . This we've been told

The question is why it's enlarged. It could be post viral. It could be due to some form of ongoing inflammation. It could be TB. It's pretty unlikely to be lymphoma, but it's on the list. An enlarged lymph node is not a diagnosis, it's a symptom.

SueDoeName · 02/01/2020 21:42

yeoldteout no - but this is a symptom of lymphoma. Blood cancer. I believe absolutely it's an enlarged lymph node. She also has them in her neck at present as well as fever and extreme unintended weight loss. What's your point ? Mine is these are all
Symptoms of lymphoma.

Do You have children? Would you not be
Concerned if
Your child had symptoms of cancer and no fucker even wanted to
Test ?

Good luck 💐

lilgreen · 02/01/2020 21:47

Ignore that post OP. You’re doing the right thing.

SueDoeName · 02/01/2020 21:47

This lymph node has been enlarged for 18 months and is getting bigger. It's never gone down. Antibiotics have not cured it and along with extreme unintended weight loss (she is 5ft 8 and now weighs 8stone 5 down from 9stone 5 6 months ago) constant illness and throat infections and ulcers, tiredness pallor and anemia- you'd not be
Concerned?

I can appreciate your frustration.
Sadly if little is done by the GP I too would advocate attending A&E

Does she have night sweats? This is a common B symptom of lymphoma

The chest X-ray will be to rule out a mediastinal mass (again another sign of lymphoma) so whilst not doing it in a quick enough manner they do appear to be doing the necessary tests.

Fingers crossed for you and her that it is not lymphoma! It sounds like regardless she needs a proper work up as there's clearly something going on!!

Keep us updated. Hugs x

SadThanks

DD 16 had an enlarged neck lymph node we went to the Drs after 3 weeks and she referred us to the ENT clinic and for a same day blood test.

Then it got even bigger over the following week and was red, couldn't really move her neck anymore. Went to GP Monday morning who said you will get a call from ENT tomorrow if you don't call me back.

ENT clinic Wednesday, scans, biopsies, MRI and all sorts. Miraculously it was nothing serious and gradually got better and disappeared but they were so thorough, think it may be linked to her psoriasis.

YANBU the GP is dreadful, your DD is clearly unwell and it isn't sorting itself out Angry

I hope you get to the bottom of this ASAP.

Schuyler · 02/01/2020 22:04

I understand your concern. Are you sure they wouldn’t do a fine needle biopsy if they saw something on the ultrasound? I was referred for a scan of a lump and this is what they did. I had only been expecting an ultrasound scan.

RandomMess · 02/01/2020 22:09

Yes ultrasound and fine needle biopsy were done straight away on DD but it was a one stop clinic 🤷🏽‍♀️ I honestly thought they would find a cyst and was so terrified when they didn't as DD oblivious to our concerns.

She had to wait for MRI and CAT scan a few more weeks. She was going to have PET scan but because it got better they didn't because of the side effect risks.

ferntwist · 02/01/2020 22:12

Go for it 100%. Like you say, she needs someone to fight her corner. Good luck

PragmaticWench · 02/01/2020 22:13

I'd say it's certainly worth asking for a blood test to rule out coeliac disease as well as pushing for the lymphoma tests.

SueDoeName · 02/01/2020 22:14

No it's just scan they've referred for so far until today at my insistence.

This is the most amazing, grounded, level headed girl, she is generous to a
Fault and she is my world .

I need to know this is nothing preferably.

And if by some massive misadventure it is "something " I need her diagnosed and treated because I simply cannot lose this girl. She is my light . The absolute light of my life.

A member of our family had lymphoma - no obvious enlarged glands but persistent tiredness and weight loss over a year or so. Had gone to doctor several times, last time doctor felt a large tumour felt in the abdomen and sent straight to the hospital, operated on same day. Don't say that to scare you as you're obviously already worried enough but it needs ruling out or treating urgently.
I would ring Lymphoma Action or similar cancer charity, ask them best thing in your situation. They may say go through with the scan or go to A&E or other advice such as private. Sending hugs.

SueDoeName · 02/01/2020 22:20

All that worries me is the persistent "gone to
Doctors several times ". Stories.

They genuinely don't get this do
They?

OP posts:
girlofthenorth · 02/01/2020 22:21

can't believe you've had all this hassle OP . Good luck with it all .

TARSCOUT · 02/01/2020 22:23

I have skimmed through very quickly so apologise if I have missed anything. Every symptom including the ulcers, the lumps,.the lethargy, the weight loss etc are exactly what my symptoms were when I was diagnosed with crohns disease. Strangely enough I had no bowel or pain symptoms until after diagnosis which took years. I do think you should go with her and don't take no for an answer. I hope she gets on ok.

SueDoeName · 02/01/2020 22:26

She is so ill again tonight she's rung in sick and gone to bed with a sick bucket. This is literally every few weeks now. She had a fever today (confirmed at gp) she is literally always ill. How could I not be worried? My girl really is not right .

OP posts:
ClientListQueen · 02/01/2020 22:35

I kept going to the GP with constant infections. Nearly lost my job due to sickness. Crying at them why am I always unwell? Always on antibiotics, blood tests "normal"
8 years
I saw a locum GP as I had night sweats, she did more bloods. Got a phone call that night asking where I was and sent me to haematology as an emergency. Turns out all (50+) 8 years of blood tests were abnormal and the lovely locum plotted them on a graph and found a trend
I had more bloods done, a haematology consult, bloods sent off to a specialist lab. Was diagnosed with autoimmune neutropenia
At diagnosis my count was 0.2 (normal is 2-8 ish) and under 0.5 is severely neutropenic. I'm lucky I didn't get neutropenic sepsis Angry

lilgreen · 02/01/2020 22:36

What do you think about possible Crohns @SueDoeName? Is it something you’ve considered? Sometimes we can get fixated on a particular diagnosis and can’t see all possibilities. Not saying you are, but I know I have in the past especially when cancer is in the mix.
