Cyprus is no longer a safe place for (young, single) women to holiday?

The teen went back to her ONS's room for consensual sex. When there, 11 of his mates burst in and filmed while three of them then raped her. She went to the police and reported it. They were detained. They said it was consensual and was "with love" (I kid you not!). She was interviewed at length with no legal representation and the police decided she was lying. She was then charged with the crime of making up a crime and has been unable to come home since the summer. The guys were all allowed to return to Israel where some of them have since said things indicating she wasn't lying at all and I'm pretty sure the video was shared (from memory, which may be wrong). She's had psychological evaluation saying she's suffering badly from PTSD.

It's worth noting that the Cyprus is a very popular destination for young Israelis to let off steam before they start national service and there's a strong political tie between the two.

So, AIBU to say that Cyprus is no longer a safe destination for young woman? If the worst happens to you and you report it and the police think you're not a credible witness, YOU will end up in jail. Knowing how traumatic reporting something like a stolen wallet in a foreign police station can be, the idea that a woman would be interviewed without legal representation in a state of severe distress, however that manifests, and then not believed and charged means that men have been given free rein to rape in Cyprus. Especially if it's in a potential "grey zone".

It's difficult to share where all the BS is about here as all the sources name/ou/doxx her - it's not just on porn sites. It's on a load of MRA/incel site for example www.avoiceformen.com/mens-rights/false-rape-culture, as well as this absolute charmer on twitter: twitter.com/Chumocracy

The only place I've seen someone state that there is video of her laughing and smiling is on this thread (I don't think there is as I haven't seen even the rape apologists linked abovemention it I don't think)

PanicAndRun · 03/01/2020 15:36

Couldn't go past this .

Some women will never accept or want to see how much men hate them.

Cyprus is no longer a safe place for (young, single) women to holiday?
kirinm · 03/01/2020 15:38

Wow that Chumocracy person. Disgusting. I'm going to report the account.

Findumdum1 · 03/01/2020 15:44

Some women will never accept or want to see how much men hate them.

It's extremely disturbing isn't it? Especially as someone who has sons. I too have stopped looking at them - I think my NY resolution is going to be to stay off Twitter.

PanicAndRun · 03/01/2020 15:48

Just realised the words don't read very well. It says

The reason why most mass shooters are men is because women don't need guns to destroy lives. They can just point their finger.

Fraggling · 03/01/2020 16:00

Fucking hell Shock

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 16:01

Some women will never accept or want to see how much men hate them.

you make it sound like ALL men hate women. If you mean SOME men are hateful and have unacceptable behaviours, clearly.

Otherwise it would be the same as accusing ALL mothers to be abusive. Because of a few cases (that's too much already, but not the point) a few cases of mothers who abused or killed their children. We don't generalise about that do we. And we should not.

paranoidmum2 · 03/01/2020 16:04

Ah, NAMALT , the missing piece in the jigsaw.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 16:17

because using NAMALT instead of formulating your point of view is enough, is it?

Datun · 03/01/2020 16:33

Germaine Greer said women have no idea how much men hate them. And when I first heard that I thought that's a bit harsh.

The older I get, the more I understand why she said it.

Especially when people start NAMALTING on a thread about a woman who has been gang raped.

I don't know why you think, Josef, that that is an appropriate remark on this thread.

But I bet Germaine Greer does.

PanicAndRun · 03/01/2020 16:34

Because ignoring a point just to point out NAMALT and refusing to acknowledge we talk about men as class is enough,is it?

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 16:35

of course you are right, MEN hate women. All men. All of them.
My bad Hmm

TatianaLarina · 03/01/2020 16:38

Do keep up Josef.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 16:40

I personally think Germaine Greer comes up with a lot of bullshit, some of it clearly for publicity, Datun 🤷

My own remark was a reply to what someone quoted, why wouldn't that be appropriate? Generalising based on one case is never right.

Blibbyblobby · 03/01/2020 16:43

because using NAMALT instead of formulating your point of view is enough, is it?

It's shorthand for a well-formulated point of view that has been said very many times in very many places by very many women.

The longhand version is "Why is this person more concerned with the possibility that some men may be unfairly included in a generalisation, than concerned by this picture being shared by men that generalises all women as prepared to make false rape accusations? And why are men typically more angry about the "unfair" things women say about men than the vicious and violent things men do to women?"

PanicAndRun · 03/01/2020 16:43

Yes every single male from infancy to taking their last breath. All of them. Because that's obviously what I said or meant.Hmm

SmileEachDay · 03/01/2020 16:47

if this case does nothing, it should highlight the link between violent rape and the filmed abuse of women (or the porn industry - but let’s not sanitise it)

Those young men raped her - I believe her entirely.

That as a group they decided to “have an orgy”, that they filmed her and uploaded it to a porn site, that they called her a whore?

That they physically injured her whilst raping her.

“Holiday gang bangers ruin teen Brit”?

  • if it’s not a title on Pornhub, there are dozens very similar.

It is appalling that she was further abused by the authorities who are tasked with protecting people.

The utter refusal of some posters to accept the level of male sexual violence that is normalised on today’s society is either extremely naive or wilfully ignorant,

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 16:51

Yes every single male from infancy to taking their last breath. All of them. Because that's obviously what I said or meant.

the way people react when someone says otherwise clearly proves at least THEY do mean it.

You can't make a comment on thread like this without being accused of dismissing and denying EVERYTHING. Some posters really just want to see any other post than "yes dear, you are so right".

TatianaLarina · 03/01/2020 16:55

Seriously?

Datun · 03/01/2020 16:55

I personally think Germaine Greer comes up with a lot of bullshit, some of it clearly for publicity, Datun

How about Jessica Eaton? Who works a lot with victims of child sex abuse.

She says that she can write 100 articles about violence towards men and get sensible comments from women.

As soon as she writes one article about violence towards women, every single time a man will say what about the men or not all men. Not just one man, tons. Every single time. It's depressingly predictable.

And that despite the fact she also set up a charity to help male victims of male violence.

You go ahead and comment on a thread about a woman who has been gang raped complaining that it's not all men.

And that a feminist's comment about how much women are hated is a 'publicity stunt'.

Blibbyblobby · 03/01/2020 16:59

You can't make a comment on thread like this without being accused of dismissing and denying EVERYTHING. Some posters really just want to see any other post than "yes dear, you are so right".

Apologies as I haven't had a chance to check back, but were you commenting on the thread earlier or was your first comment the one reminding us not all men are like that?

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 17:02

And that a feminist's comment about how much women are hated is a 'publicity stunt'.

well isn't it? I don't put all feminists in the same bag, see I don't generalise. Unlike others.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 17:03

every single time a man will say what about the men or not all men.

what about WOMEN who point that out too? Are we allowed a voice? Just checking...

SmileEachDay · 03/01/2020 17:04

A publicity stunt? To raise public awareness about the issue with misogyny?

Yes, I think it probably was.

Unfortunately many, many people still haven’t noticed.

Italiangreyhound · 03/01/2020 17:49

PhoneLock "It will be interesting to see just how much difference it makes, not only in Asia Napa but in the rest of the country too.

I will be going to there later this year."

Well you will be able to do your research while there, but i am not sure that Cyprus will give out correct information about who is going there. I expect a lot of men will go there.

How ironic that when I looked on the link for the Cypriot newspaper you linked to, my browser warned me 'not secure'

Too bloody right! Sad Angry

Babynamechangerr "I think it will make quite a bit of difference" I agree.

Aroundtheworldin80moves "Ayia Napa is just one resort, there are family ones near by. Cyprus has quite a large British population too. There is a lot more to Cyprus than the nightclub scene and booze cruises etc. History, wine tours up in the mountains, sports etc."

You are missing the point. I have no doubt that Cyprus has much to offer and that there are kind and good and decent people in abundance there. The issue is that if a woman is unfortunate enough to be the victim of a sexual crime she would have no confidence that she would get justice and I would imagine every confidence that she could end up at the end of miscarriage of justice and jailed falsely.

Anyone else interested in the march on Monday?
