AIBU?

Cyprus is no longer a safe place for (young, single) women to holiday?

The teen went back to her ONS's room for consensual sex. When there, 11 of his mates burst in and filmed while three of them then raped her. She went to the police and reported it. They were detained. They said it was consensual and was "with love" (I kid you not!). She was interviewed at length with no legal representation and the police decided she was lying. She was then charged with the crime of making up a crime and has been unable to come home since the summer. The guys were all allowed to return to Israel where some of them have since said things indicating she wasn't lying at all and I'm pretty sure the video was shared (from memory, which may be wrong). She's had psychological evaluation saying she's suffering badly from PTSD.

It's worth noting that the Cyprus is a very popular destination for young Israelis to let off steam before they start national service and there's a strong political tie between the two.

So, AIBU to say that Cyprus is no longer a safe destination for young woman? If the worst happens to you and you report it and the police think you're not a credible witness, YOU will end up in jail. Knowing how traumatic reporting something like a stolen wallet in a foreign police station can be, the idea that a woman would be interviewed without legal representation in a state of severe distress, however that manifests, and then not believed and charged means that men have been given free rein to rape in Cyprus. Especially if it's in a potential "grey zone".

Yes I have been reading the thread for several days now so spare me from your patronising comments. I really don't know what it is you're trying to achieve here.

That is your problem, not mine.

But if it helps, all I wanted to to do was answer a question directed to me by another poster. Nothing more.

What are you trying to achieve here?

Out of curiosity, was your holiday prebooked @PhoneLock ?

Yes. Flights, accommodation and car hire.

Fair enough, I can see the reluctance to take a stand in that case.

I just found it a tad flippant and callous to basically say "well I'm safe, and shit happens so I'm going anyways".

The holiday being pre booked/paid explains it a bit more .

Thank you. It's very, very easy to say that you will never set foot in Cyprus ever/or again if you don't actually stand to lose £100s by doing so.

Where was the consulate if there's one even?
Maybe do a crowd funding page and get these alleged rapist little ***s banged up. Angry Angry

Where was the consulate if there's one even?

Cyprus is a member of the Commonwealth so there is a High Commission.

As has been already explained, there was little they could do.

There is a crowd funding page on Gofundme and a march tomorrow.

Cyprus is a member of the Commonwealth? I never knew that.

Parts of Cyprus are still British. Then there's the Turkish controlled bits, the Greek Cypriot bits (not actually a part of Greece), and the UN buffer zones. It's still officially a war zone between Turkey and Cyprus, but it's a longstanding truce.

I've just read from a Telegraph article that the girl had 35 bruises on her body which the judge claimed were jelly fish stings!

If there are still people questioning the fairness of this conviction, I honestly think this one point should change your mind. Jellyfish stings ffs?

Rough sex causes bruises......FFS

@stagnantbrain

Except - if you bothered actually reading rather than dismissing everything that might actually cause even the most ignorant of people to question the validity of the judgment - the judge didn't claim they were from rough sex. The judge decided they were jellyfish stings.

FrogsFrogs · 06/01/2020 10:32

Maybe stagnant thinks that using jellyfish in sex is a likely scenario.

@frogsfrogs grim but perhaps.

It must feel good to reach conclusions that not even the Court reached about how someone suffered bruising to her body based on fuck all knowledge.

Dear lord.

Out of interest I just googled jellyfish sting and looked at the images.

They're not bruises.

Reading that the judge insisted the bruises were jelly fish stings just makes me want to cry.

Cyprus was never a place for young women to go to alone or to have ons's.

As always... any excuse. Anything goes.

I have just read that she may be given a pardon from the president of Cyprus.

Even if it means she can come home without a sentence, this is still appalling. A pardon??? What a slap in the face after all she’s been through.

I am most happy to boycott Cyprus.

FrogsFrogs · 06/01/2020 19:53

Pardoned still means you've done something wrong though doesn't it.

And the men will never be tried.

Report
SisterAgatha · 06/01/2020 20:00

Exactly. No apology. No come back on her 12 rapists. Fuck you Cyprus.

Report
kirinm · 07/01/2020 08:49

I'm pleased to hear that the girl intends to appeal the conviction. They have 10 days to submit their grounds of appeal to the Cypriot Supreme Court according to her barrister.

It is really touching to see the support she has received from Israeli and Cypriot women I think.

Report
Findumdum1 · 07/01/2020 12:18

Agree with both those points - the fact that she is so keen to appeal says a lot to me.
