Cyprus is no longer a safe place for (young, single) women to holiday?

Kraai · 30/12/2019 11:57

The teen went back to her ONS's room for consensual sex. When there, 11 of his mates burst in and filmed while three of them then raped her. She went to the police and reported it. They were detained. They said it was consensual and was "with love" (I kid you not!). She was interviewed at length with no legal representation and the police decided she was lying. She was then charged with the crime of making up a crime and has been unable to come home since the summer. The guys were all allowed to return to Israel where some of them have since said things indicating she wasn't lying at all and I'm pretty sure the video was shared (from memory, which may be wrong). She's had psychological evaluation saying she's suffering badly from PTSD.

It's worth noting that the Cyprus is a very popular destination for young Israelis to let off steam before they start national service and there's a strong political tie between the two.

So, AIBU to say that Cyprus is no longer a safe destination for young woman? If the worst happens to you and you report it and the police think you're not a credible witness, YOU will end up in jail. Knowing how traumatic reporting something like a stolen wallet in a foreign police station can be, the idea that a woman would be interviewed without legal representation in a state of severe distress, however that manifests, and then not believed and charged means that men have been given free rein to rape in Cyprus. Especially if it's in a potential "grey zone".

You think a fear of ALL men is rational, do you?
I know some do, it's frightening.

Knowing that (a) some men will rape and (b) it’s not possible to know with 100% certainty before the event exactly which men they are, a wariness of men is entirely rational.

Interesting article here from Jewish Chronicle about the case.

Every single thread derails into NAMALT

Pathetic isn't it. I wonder if a siren goes off somewhere to alert these posters who are just desperate to dive in and start defending the poor oppressed men.

FairytaleofButlins · 30/12/2019 20:00

Every single thread derails into NAMALT and that discussion is made about men as a class rather than every single man on the planet from infancy until they die.

because your arguments are excessive and irrational.
Not my "Nigel" indeed Hmm

Some of us don't see MEN as the enemy.

It would be as stupid as pretending that mothers are potentially dangerous because of cases of child abuse. They do happen, no one is denying it, it doesn't mean they are the norm.

That case is not remotely black and white.

bringbacksideburns · 30/12/2019 20:04

I would hesitate to report rape or encourage my daughter's to in any part of the world.

Why? Because of the small chance of conviction?
I would encourage my daughter to do the opposite but understand and support her if she couldn't.

The consulate over there seem to have been woefully inadequate in helping this young woman. Yet another depressingly sad case where they get away with it and the victim is punished.

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether · 30/12/2019 20:07

FFS the insistence from some that women should just trust all strange men and dangerous ones are really rare is the irrational attitude. They are male mammals, permanently on heat, and in addition most are raised in societies that treat women as property or things and sex as an essential reward. Women are an essential feature in every male paradise ever created around the world. Many societies explicitly say that women are less important than men in law and that is enforced by group violence. They are stronger than us and think they can use us however they want. Usually they are perfectly correct to think so because they own the law and all law is backed by the threat of violence eventually. It’s never their fault either, they’re only poor little mennikins who cannot resist their own dicks. Talk fucking sense, wake up and smell the coffee.

happyandsingle · 30/12/2019 20:13

But male viloence towards women is getting the norm.
You read about it every day, you see it in films and hear it in the lyrics of songs.
It's made society desensatised to the issue like it's cool to listen in a song about some bitch getting slapped or in a film where the man hits her because he loves her so much.
Then we have honour killings, cultural norms where a womans worth is nothing.
The list is endless.

PanicAndRun · 30/12/2019 20:18

While at the same time blaming the woman and shaming her for trusting him, going with him, going to his room etc.

The mental gymnastics are seriously impressive.

Patroclus · 30/12/2019 20:23

Yep, the Jewish Chronicle genuinely managed to turn it into criticism of the labour party.

powershowerforanhour · 30/12/2019 20:25

Also- I wasn't there yadda yadda but-
If I had a gun to my head and the trigger not being pulled depending on my guessing which of the following scenarios was closer to the truth:

  1. She met this guy she fancied, went back to his place and said, "Bring all your mates! The more the merrier! Next please, next please, as hard as you can, I do so love being injured! ...and then later on thought , "Oh well you know gang bangs are totes fun and definitely my sort of thing but...I do believe the rotters had a video recording device! What is great aunt Millicient going to think when she discovers I have been generous with my affections in a manner unbecoming of a lady? I know, I shall accuse the bounders of rape and spark an 11-defendant rape trial. The international press surely won't be interested and great aunt Millicent will never know" or
  1. She met this guy she fancied and went back to his place alone with him looking forward to a cuddle, a bit of a shag and then expecting to either fall asleep with that one guy and wake up the next morning cuddled up to the same one guy, or, if she was feeling particularly energetic, bounce out of bed declaring "That was great but the night is young and there are cocktails to be drunk and dancing to be done, I'll race you back to the bar".

I'm going with option 2.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 30/12/2019 20:29

That was interesting grapefruits

Thank you for posting it

FairytaleofButlins · 30/12/2019 20:31

big jump from not seeing every single man as possible attackers though, isn't it? I teach my kids about PEOPLE, not about irrational attitude and beliefs.

Many societies explicitly say that women are less important than men in law quite, but surely when you go to these countries you are very aware of that fact and behave accordingly? I happen to have clients in such countries and travel for work there. I don't believe they are right, but I live in London and we are different here.

As usual, this thread is attracting some completely bonkers posts.

They are male mammals, permanently on heat .... really..

I sincerely hope some of the posters do not have sons!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 30/12/2019 20:31

Abso-fucking-lutely

Graphista · 30/12/2019 20:41

Yabu to think it was EVER safe there. It’s long had an appalling reputation for this kind of issue and I would never go there nor recommend it to anyone.

I have Cypriot friends who think our (societal) view of Cyprus, particularly this part of Cyprus is hugely unrealistic and rose tinted

“Does anyone know if the woman has sufficient funding and legal assistance behind her or whether there's any fundraising going on to help with that? I haven't found anything online yet but would happily contribute if it's needed.” I understand there’s a gofundme page for her legal fees

I believe her

Men as a class ARE a threat even in the Uk rape is all but legal and women are worthless. But we’re not QUITE at the point of prosecuting victims and not providing them with legal representation when we do so.

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether · 30/12/2019 20:45

@FairytaleofButlins, which part of the animal kingdom do you reckon male Homo Sapiens (note homo) fall into then? Insects? Also perhaps you’d care to describe the breeding season of our species? Or explain why women are so sought after by men everywhere?
Nice victim blaming too.

GrapefruitsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 30/12/2019 20:49

@Patroclus I actually thought it was a good point about what happens when groups of people develop a self righteous mentality.

FairytaleofButlins · 30/12/2019 20:54

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether

would love to know WHERE you saw victim blaming...
If you picture all men as pure animals without any restraint, I can see where you are coming from. This is absolutely bonkers!

but seeing from another poster even in the Uk rape is all but legal and women are worthless.. good lord, full MN bingo.
PIty the posters who feel worthless, I don't. I bet the Queen or the ex Prime Minister don't either.

Sssneks · 30/12/2019 20:59

www.justiceabroad.co.uk/news

This site, which is linked in the gofundme updates, reports a lot of details from the trial and the various witness statements. Please be warned, some of the content is very distressing.

In her testimony at the trial she said was actually in an established romantic relationship with the guy whose room she went back to. So can people please stop speculating that it was a one night stand?

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether · 30/12/2019 20:59

And you clearly have a problem accepting reality. Have a walk out at night in most UK cities. Try Leeds. Or don’t. The Queen is a protected class, although recent events have shown just how much of a prisoner she is.

Victim blaming us exactly what you did when you implied that the girl should have paid more attention to where she was and therefore... should have behaved how exactly? Never spoken to a strange man? As panic said, that’s some kind of mental gymnastics.

feellikeanalien · 30/12/2019 21:02

I remember inter-railing with three other friends (all female) back in the 80s. We were being repeatedly harrassed by a group of men at the main station in Rome. When we approached a couple of policeman patrolling the station to ask them to intervene they just laughed.

It is deeply depressing that over 30 years later attitudes do not seem to have changed and in fact seem to be getting worse.

I truly fear for my DD growing up in a world where boys/young men seem to regard girls as nothing more than sexual objects.

PanicAndRun · 30/12/2019 21:04

There's definitely a nearly full Bingo card, a mysoginistic one.

IdblowJonSnow · 30/12/2019 21:08

Ssneks thanks for posting that. It seems very clear that she was gang raped, not that I'd ever doubted it.
Sickening case.

PanicAndRun · 30/12/2019 21:12

@FairytaleofButlins have a read through this. Even if you truly believe she lies,or not sure or whatever , can you hand on heart say that justice was served? That this was a fair, unbiased trial? That it was proven without reasonable doubt that she lied?

*I wouldn't advise anyone to go strolling in London with their handbag opened and their wallet and phone on show...

reminding women that one-night stands are not safe with a stranger is hardly victim blaming.*

You can just fuck right off with this utter bollocks. Go and educate yourself. Most rapes are not stranger rapes, so perhaps getting married, being home alone with an acquaintance or spending time with a relative is also like strolling through London with your handbag open. Shall I say it again? MOST RAPES ARE NOT STRANGER RAPES. You are absolutely victim blaming, as are other people on this thread tutting about how she should know a ONS is dangerous. Google rape myth acceptance. Fuck, shall we go right back to "you should know if you walk down the street in a short skirt you're asking for it".
