I think I saw a ghost

A few months back, DH and I stayed in a hotel room (One with “history”) abroad. I woke up in the middle of the night needing a drink. I walked through the living room area and saw a man crying in the sofa. I asked him what was wrong. He said nobody understands. I told him I do and then I woke up. I never told DH but the whole thing freaked me out. It wasn’t like a normal dream. I woke up feeling like I knew this guy. I felt sad, like literallly heartbroken at the thought of him crying.

I’ve never really gotten over it. The man was a public figure. My head tells me it was a dream of course but I just can’t process it for some reason and it’s depressing me

Oxbridge degrees count as two.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 27/12/2019 07:31

I find things like this happen to me when i am going through a stressful period in my life. I'm not patronising op, but the human mind is an incredible thing and something we know very little about .
I believe you saw and felt those things op, but to put a definition on it would be impossible

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/12/2019 07:40

Michel Hutchance.

He says it's fine, he didn't mean to scare you. His fluence just hangs around.

He told me this because I have three first class honours degrees from Imperial. And one from Oxford (but that was PPE, so he said it doesn't count as the spiritz hate all such worldly folk).

Elbeagle · 27/12/2019 07:50

Most of my family and friends have also seen one

Which is strange, as I haven’t and none of my family and friends have either. Maybe they only appear to certain people.

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 07:57

@ILikeyourHairyHands Grin

That is exactly what the spirit world thinks of PPE. Clearly you are Very Sensitive. Or just sing ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ in the shower a lot.

KatherineJaneway · 27/12/2019 07:58

I don't know why but I really want to know who the musician is Xmas Grin

I dreamt I was in love with my husband's mate (not attracted to him IRL) and for ages afterwards mooned over him and practically blushed whenever he was mentioned. Felt like I was having an affair! Was a relief when the bubble burst and I could see him as the twitty man child he actually is.

ps I don't believe in ghosts and I have 73 degrees from Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and Wigan Polytechnic.

GaaaaarlicBread · 27/12/2019 08:03

I’ve seen a ghost three times , fully awake each time . And as an adult too .
I wasn’t dreaming . On the third time my mum actually saw it at the same time, we were both talking to this man in the bedroom thinking it was my dad as we could see through the door that he was lying down . Could hear the breathing and everything initially and then it stopped , and when he didn’t respond she said ‘he’s not dead is he?’ We couldn’t see his face as it was tilted to one side when we peered through , And we ran in (he’d been complaining of a bad headache and all of a sudden it panicked us), we went in and nobody was there but a mark on the bed where he’d been laying . But mum had perfectly made the bed as I was with her and she always had it neat, with the decorative cushions etc and they were moved .
Looked out the window and my dad was out in the garden happy as Larry.

BertrandRussell · 27/12/2019 08:11

Everybody has seen a ghost. I’ve seen at least three - not counting vivid/licks dreams. But a little digging soon revealed the rational explanation behind each one. People who want to see ghosts don’t do the digging.

Ohfrigginghellers · 27/12/2019 08:16

Ian Curtis

IamPickleRick · 27/12/2019 08:16

I saw ghosts all the time until I got my epilepsy diagnosis! Now I know it’s a weird brain thing, not Aunt Marge coming back with an obscure message.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 27/12/2019 08:20

The thing is - whether it’s a ghost or not doesn’t really matter. The fact that it’s still upsetting op months later means that it needs processing and addressing.

Time to see the gp?

lovegivelive · 27/12/2019 08:23

I believe there is more to this world than we know or understand. I've had many strange experiences throughout my life, including seeing "ghosts" which were seen at the same time by other people. I do always try and find a rational explanation first before jumping to conclusions.

In the hypnogogic state, it is very common to see "manifestations" or vivid images. Since I was a child whenever I get very tired I can see things which my rational mind knows aren't there. Like partial apparations, floating faces, random limbs etc! Logically I know it's just the product of a tired brain

Evilmorty · 27/12/2019 08:27

Often ghosts boil down to this.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia

Human brains will always look for patterns that make faces in objects. I once thought I saw a ghostly face in the window, it just needed a good clean!

RamonaFlower · 27/12/2019 08:30

I don't believe in ghosts but I really want to know who it was.

I'm guessing Kurt Cobain too.

BertrandRussell · 27/12/2019 08:31

“ I believe there is more to this world than we know or understand.”

So do I. But I am perfectly happy to say “We don’t know that yet- but we will one day”rather than reach for unscientific or improbable explanations for the things we don’t understand yet.

Shanny81 · 27/12/2019 08:40

I don’t want to say who it is as it makes my post even more unbelievable than it already is (and yes I realise how daft it sounds already). It would be like someone coming in saying “I saw the ghost of Elvis” (it wasn’t Elvis).

If it helps, the motel room was in Seattle and yes he has been mentioned on here already. As I say I was never a fan. We were in Seattle on holiday and spent one night in this crappy motel for DHs sake as he’s the fan. The rest of the trip was not about this person (well, I suppose some of it was as DH wanted to see other landmarks related to this person)

Has anyone quoted the usual bit from Hamlet yet?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/12/2019 08:47

@FeigningHorror, I wish I wasn't so sensitive to the spirit world. It's a burden.

I once found myself transported to the dancefloor at Annabelle's and I saw my simular telling Mark Birley to keep his son away from Johnny Aspinall.

It didn't work. He still got mauled by a tiger.

Moral of this story?

Tigers don't give a fuck what class you are as long as you are meaty.

Nodancingshoes · 27/12/2019 08:48

Were you in room 226 of the Marco Polo motel by any chance op???

Pinkbonbon · 27/12/2019 08:55

Saw one once, it was never human though. Horrible dark thing. You never think you'll see something like that. Hope I never do again. But wouldn't be so quick to dismiss other peoples experiences in future.

What I noticed most of all was the way it made me feel. Could feel a tangible rage coming off it.

It is possible that there is something at the location that reached out to you. But it is also possible that knowing who that person was and thinking of them and their death before you slept made you dream of them. As you were asleep, I'd be more inclined to think the later. I've definitely had dreams that have made me sad and my heart ache.

I few months ago I dreamt of a blonde man with shooting stars tattooed on his shoulder. I have a feeling I've dreamt of him a couple of times before. We are like two halves of a whole, reuniting, promising to find one another and then I wake up. Is he a soul mate? I doubt it. But I still felt such loss upon waking. And I'll have my eyes open for men with that tattoo in future lol.

It's a big world. 'Ghosts' are definately real. So anything us possible I guess.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/12/2019 08:59

Ghosts are not definitely real.

It's a big wide Universe out there.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 27/12/2019 09:02

It sounds as though this person's story has struck a chord with you (no pun intended). Sometimes when there is great sadness around us we can pick up on it. Very intense emotions. I still don't think you saw his ghost though. Are you content in your life at the moment or are you having difficulties?

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 09:04

@ILikeyourHairyHands, I think you’re on dubious ground here, as neither Aspers nor Mark Birley actually took their degree. What do the spirits say about people who skip Finals and nip off to Ascot instead?

SerenDippitty · 27/12/2019 09:07

I think it’s possible the man in the dream represented something, some emotion that you are suppressing? If he didn’t you would not still be holding on to it.
