Feel I should Keep it up longer as I have a 1 year old.. And he likes the lights, but I've had enough of Xmas this year, I've had enough of this year tbh, it's been pretty shit!

How is Boxing Day viewed as the end of Christmas though?
Well if you're not religious then the the Twelth night (based on the Epiphany) doesn't really have much significance. Why would it?

puddingbowlee · 27/12/2019 13:33

Why bother putting decorations up if they are annoying?

ShristmasChopper · 27/12/2019 13:37

It screams of the generation my MIL slags off and tbh in this instance I do find myself kind of agreeing with her... the I want it now generation. I want my decorations up now on 25th Novemeber and im.not going to wait and then boohoo Im pissed off with Christmas come 26th December. It's also as if the main event is the presents and once that's done on the 25th then what's the point. It all feels very commercial. Asda has it xmas decs up and so will I mentality.

Tbh I couldn't care what anyone does in thier own home but for me Christmas is more about the feeling of festiveness and being with people I like spending time with. I like putting my decs up "late" around 15th (which is early by tradition) and the whole of this week despite my shifts at work is still Christmas and feels festive. Im always glad to be getting the house back to normal after New Year but not in any rush. Jan and Feb always feel like long dull months the longer I can keep Christmas going (into 1st week of Jan) the better.

Merry Christmas to those still in the festive mood Xmas Grin

Is it really a generational thing? I'm in my 30s & have family in their 20s plus work in schools. I didn't know this was a thing & everyone know sees the festive period as extending till Jan.

daisypond · 27/12/2019 14:04

Surely schools would know- they teach the basics of the Nativity story. The three kings turn up on Epiphany, 12th Night, with the gold, frankincense and myrrh, 12 days after the birth. It doesn’t make any sense otherwise. Those are the gifts brought, and that marks the end of Christmas.

I'm going to my brother's next week for Hogmanay and would be disappointed if all the decorations were down already. To me the decorations are for the festive fortnight/ mid winter festival. Christmas day is near the start of this not the end.

Parker231 · 27/12/2019 14:14

@daisypond - depends on whether you believe the story or not? In our house it comes under the same category as the tooth fairy.

Danni12 · 27/12/2019 14:22

Mine are coming down this weekend, I've had enough of Christmas now....
It's your house, you take them down when you want to

lorn195 · 27/12/2019 14:25

Our cards are down, but resisting the decs for now (would prefer them down) due to the boys. Can't wait to get to rid of them and get back to normal.

OldEvilOwl · 27/12/2019 14:26

I'll probably leave mine until New Year's Day

daisypond · 27/12/2019 14:29

Parker I don’t think it matters if you believe the story per se. But why bother at all, then? I’m not religious but I like the tradition and the ritual of it all. That’s what matters to me. Otherwise you end up in a mishmash of chocolate crucified Jesuses in a manger with eggs and holly. We don’t do presents as such at all in my family. But each to their own.

alphasox · 27/12/2019 14:35

We are taking ours down today as it’s my ds2’s birthday tomorrow so that’s our tradition. I can’t wait to hoover the lounge!

Parker231 · 27/12/2019 14:36

We have family Christmas traditions. Two trees are decorated the week before Christmas, lots of parties and meals out. 16 of the family are staying for the week. Lovely meals and lots to drink. Presents for everyone. Decorations down first thing on NYE as we host our annual party for about 50. Everywhere clean and tidy to make space for everyone. Back to work today. Christmas over and ready to move onto New Year celebrations.

We don’t do the 12th night, Church, nativity as they don’t mean anything to us.

How big are your trees that you can only host 50 by getting rid of them? 😁
