One year I was so fed up with the whole Christmas thing that I put the decorations up late on Christmas Eve and took them down Boxing Day afternoon. I was unhappy and couldn’t disguise that completely. My mood affected everyone (wasn’t dealing with bereavement of sibling).

I regret this as it a bad memory for my children, from a not so good time in our family. Even though they are teenagers now I put them up earlier than I would like (first week of December) and take them down 12th night and they genuinely love them and see it as the start of our Christmas.
However I doubt a one year old would be affected like this.

Mumof1andacat · 26/12/2019 21:29

Itching to do mine. I have work tomorrow and a friends for lunch Saturday so I can start dechristmasing sunday :)

Piggywaspushed · 26/12/2019 21:31

I know someone who puts their tree up on November 1st!!

TheHumanSatsuma · 26/12/2019 21:33

Do you what you like, you’ve obviously decided.
Don’t look to others for approval/justification/attention.

Parker231 · 26/12/2019 21:37

I’d hate them up until 12th night - Christmas is long over then. We put them up the weekend before Christmas and take them down on NYE although DH and I are back at work tomorrow so DT’s and our visitors have offered to sort them out.

There’s no right and wrong date to take them down - Christmas means different things to different people.

Fundays12 · 26/12/2019 21:40

I always take my tree down before new year. I can’t stand it up intk a new year as I want my house organised for the start of a new year not to have to spend hours putting away a tree.

TobyTanker · 26/12/2019 21:42

tree went up second weekend of December, every year I'm sick of it all by now.

This is why you're sick of it. We all have a real giggle putting the tree and everything up on Christmas Eve, it make it more special imo not having it up so long.
I've got a friend that puts hers up at the end of Nov. That would drive me bonkers.

Popsdob · 26/12/2019 21:44

Mine has been known to come down on Boxing Day before!

speakout · 26/12/2019 21:45

Do what you like.
We have OHs family coming on Sunday for a meal and to exchange gifts, so will keep the festive cheer going a while longer.

ShristmasChopper · 26/12/2019 21:46

It's up to you. It's your house and if your Christmas is over and you're not enjoying the light etc then take them.down.
My decs only went up.laatbweek and our Christmas only started properly at around 5pm on Xmas eve so we are very much still in the Christmas swing of things here.
I aim.to take mine down on 4th or 5th of January as per tradition but sometimes it might be a day or 2 later or earlier depending on work etc.

LeithWalk · 26/12/2019 21:48

Up the weekend before Christmas - and sometimes we put it up as a family event when everyone arrives on Christmas Eve - Christmas carols, Baileys, time to be together.
So yes it is still up - we are still celebrating Christmas with family arriving tomorrow.
The tree and decs will stay up till 12th night ( at the latest) - our local charity are, for a donation, collecting the tree and recycling it for us.

LoveNote · 26/12/2019 21:48

of course the 12 days of christmas thing is religious based!!

christmas is whatever people want it to be, theres no hard fast rules. majority of people do not observe the religious element at all.

Lofari · 26/12/2019 21:49

Mine came down today
My non verbal autistic son was so happy. He's done so well but been so out of routine. Nice to get some normality back

Rezie · 26/12/2019 21:50

We put the decorations up on Dec 23rd and take them down between jan 6th and 13th.

redcarbluecar · 26/12/2019 21:54

Entirely your call. I’m at my DM’s, who has hardly any decs up at all. Mine are up 1st Dec to 1st Jan, but I’d take them down earlier if I felt like it. Hope you are ok as seems like this is part of a bigger picture for you.

bookmum08 · 26/12/2019 21:54

I love my tree. It's pretty. Makes the room pretty and cosy. I got given some make your own decoration sets as gifts. I made one yesterday, one today. My tree is not going anywhere until 12th night.

Glitterblue · 26/12/2019 21:55

I'm getting more irritated every year by people putting them up early to mid November and down on Christmas night or boxing day! It matches what the shops are doing, they're almost packing Christmas away for Easter stuff on Christmas eve! We are still very much in the Christmas frame of mind in this house, DH is off now till a week on Monday and we've had two extremely busy days with family so I'm ready for a rest, not taking all the decorations down! We put ours up mid December and take them down a day or two before 12th night or on 12th night, depending on where it falls in relation to work.

daisypond · 26/12/2019 21:57

Well, do as you like. I would never dream of taking decorations down until 12th Night. It just would seem wrong. We only put them up at the earliest the weekend before Christmas. Ours went up on 21st.

Fruitbatdancer · 26/12/2019 21:58

Ours will be taken down tomorrow and the tree outside waiting for the charity collection.
There were Easter eggs & mini eggs in Tesco today Shock

YuletideFairy · 26/12/2019 21:58

it's deeply unnatural not to see in the new year with the decorations still up.

It’s not unnatural. My tree goes up on 14th and down on 30th. There is no right or wrong when it comes to Christmas trees or decorations.

MrsHusky · 26/12/2019 21:58

ours will come next week some time, always before 12th night, if not on it.

But we dont put ours up until mid December, so its never up for more than 3 weeks tops.

I think taking it down before New Year is all a bit Bah Humbug, they should still be up NYE!

BentNeckLady · 26/12/2019 22:01

Mines coming down tomorrow as all the needles are dropping off now Smile

I’ve never leave them up for long after Christmas as it’s ds and dds birthday soon and want it to be separate for them as it’s pretty shut having a birthday close to Christmas.

JustACog · 26/12/2019 22:03

Ours are coming down on Saturday

NeverGotMyPuppy · 26/12/2019 22:03

Do what you like. Why would you care what anyone else does?

halocompanach · 26/12/2019 22:04

Our tree is out in the entrance hall so we don't see it much unless we're walking through, it'll stay up for a while because it's not in the way.

I think people are taking trees down earlier if they have a modern new build because houses don't always have room for christmas trees any more do they?
