How is Boxing Day viewed as the end of Christmas though?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/12/2019 07:20

Surely New Year is all part of the 'season'?

Even if you don't accept 12th night.

Misscromwellrocks · 27/12/2019 08:00

I agree with the mirroring the shops comment. I find it depressing the way some people can't wait to start Christmas, rushing to get the decorations ups as soon as Halloween is over and then can't wait to pack it away and move on the second Christmas day is over. It seems so out of rhythm with the seasons .

FuzzyPenguin · 27/12/2019 08:04

I want to take mine down, sick of the cat attacking it now the presents are gone.
Take your tree down if you want, there are no rules about when you can take it down. You could always leave some fairy lights up for your DC, we have “winter lights” up for the first few months every year

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 27/12/2019 08:05

Mine go up first weekend in December and come down after new year

puddingbowlee · 27/12/2019 08:34

Yes, how? My office is closed, the kids are off school. We are still doing christmassy things.

Parker231 · 27/12/2019 08:37

Back to work today for many of us - Christmas is definitely over when the alarm went off at 6.30!

Oblomov20 · 27/12/2019 08:45

I struggle with the idea that people think Christmas is over, after Boxing Day? Or rather after Christmas Day itself.

All these people who put their decorations up in November? Are fed up with the idea of Christmas, as soon as they've eaten their turkey meal? Odd.

greenlavender · 27/12/2019 09:28

@Jinglebella123 - up 1st November, but you don't like clutter. Right.

Tombliwho · 27/12/2019 09:42

Ours will probably come down Sunday so I can have good tidy up. I can't stand having them up into the new year, it depresses me.
The 12 days really doesn't have any significance anymore. DH is back at work today, life goes on.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 27/12/2019 09:50

Take them down if it suits you. Who cares?

theneverendinglaundry · 27/12/2019 09:56

Mine will come down at the weekend, I am sick of them now! Then I will give the house a good clean next week.

daisypond · 27/12/2019 10:15

I’m at work throughout the Christmas period, don’t even get the public holidays off, but decorations will still stay till 12th Night -when the three kings/wise men turned up with the gifts. We haven’t reached that part of the Christmas story yet. Never mind the ancient traditions that say if you release the tree spirits that live in holly and ivy too early, bad luck and bad harvests follow. I like all this traditional stuff.

Angel2702 · 27/12/2019 10:18

Mine are coming down today. It takes a full day so we like it done to have a good clean for new Year. Needs to be done before everyone is back at work. Kids want the space to play with their toys and there is just clutter everywhere.

My son wants to put his birthday cards up as well and get ready for his belated party so all needs to be taken down.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 27/12/2019 10:34

YABVU! It’s the best bit of Christmas now! The Office is closed, Dh and I are off work, kids are still of school and we are doing Xmasy things. The decorations come down sometime after the 2nd Jan.
What it wrong with you people???!!

Parker231 · 27/12/2019 10:38

@TENDTOprocrastinate - we’re not all off work. DH and I went back today so our Christmas celebrations are over for this year.

Misscromwellrocks · 27/12/2019 10:47

What's the big deal about having the house cleaned up for New Year's day?

MotherHeggy · 27/12/2019 10:51

Just taken mine down.
Still got holly and ivy in a couple of vases though.

Tombliwho · 27/12/2019 11:53

@TENDTOprocrastinate Confused it must be a total revelation to you that not everyone is off work..

puddingbowlee · 27/12/2019 12:31

How big & messy are peoples decorations if it makes their house cluttered & they can't wait to clean.

puddingbowlee · 27/12/2019 12:32

it must be a total revelation to you that not everyone is off work..

I've worked over Christmas before but that doesn't mean that it's not holiday period particularly if you have dc.

2Rebecca · 27/12/2019 12:34

I think a lot of people put xmas stuff up too early. I put stuff up a week before Christmas and love having it around until 12th night but don't bother with outside lights. It's mainly a tree and tinsel draped over pictures so doesn't take long.

chillandrelax · 27/12/2019 12:37

Just taken ours down although have left the outside lights up. They have been up since 1st December.

Parker231 · 27/12/2019 12:44

Some posters are coming across as intolerant - there isn’t a right or wrong date to put up and take down decorations- it’s an individual choice. There aren’t rules!

mencken · 27/12/2019 13:10

no rules, absolutely.

but I suspect the 'bored with this' is due to the whole thing starting before Halloween. Decs up here around the 20th and will be sad to take them down on the 6th.

remember, retail fans, it's time to start buying easter eggs...
