‘That’s me done for food today’ after a 3 course lunch

I went to a restaurant with four friends for a Christmas lunch a few days ago. We all ate 3 courses and had a glass of wine each (none of us are big drinkers). The portions were decent-sized but not ridiculously big.

As we were finishing one of my friends said something along the lines of ‘that was lovely, I wont be needing anything else to eat today’. Following this all my other friends nodded/agreed.

While I didn’t say anything I was thinking that this is not the case for me at all! After that lunch at 1pm I ate beans on toast at around 7pm. I think of myself as someone with a pretty normal appetite, but if my friends were being truthful I ate a substantial amount more than them that day.

I remember a few years back my MiL making a similar comment after a restaurant lunch, that she wouldn’t need to eat anything else that day. However as we happened to be staying with her at the time I know she later ate sandwich and soup at dinner time.

So - my friend’s comment got me thinking. What do people actually mean when they use this phrase? Is it literal, as in ‘after this big lunch I will not eat any food until tomorrow’? Or do people simply mean that they won’t need to have a big evening meal, but might have eg a sandwich? Or is it something some people (women!) say without meaning it, to indicate they have a small/delicate appetite, though they may have every intention of eating something else that day.

For what it’s worth all of my friends in the restaurant are healthy weights, and as far as I know no one has any history of disordered eating.

It's just an expression? Odd that everyone is being so literal about it

IvinghoeBeacon · 21/12/2019 07:30

I don’t recognise it as a common expression, so perhaps that’s why I would assume someone was being literal, but I also don’t generally talk about how full I am after a meal or about my eating habits

Crimson72 · 21/12/2019 07:33

I’d still have a small dinner - like a boiled egg or beans on toast - in the evening OP!

CharitySchmarity · 21/12/2019 11:11

I know at least one person who doesn't eat anything else at all after a big lunch, but I couldn't do it - I'd be "hungry" again at dinner time, whether literally hungry or just conditioned to have something I don't know, and I'd have something even if it wasn't very big.

Glitterblue · 21/12/2019 11:30

I often say it after a big lunch out, and totally mean it at the time, but usually end up having cereal or toast or something in the evening.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 21/12/2019 11:43

Why do so many of us fixate on food? It's this kind of nonsense that perpetuates through generations and it can be damaging.

That comment, the "That's me done for food today", it just doesn't need saying at all, so it's just said for affect and in most cases, it's not even true. So utterly pointless and annoying.

Does anybody ever pull any of these people up on their nonsense when it's obvious that they're filling up in secret to the wide knowledge of everybody else?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 21/12/2019 11:44

IvinghoeBeacon, me neither. It's just not necessary.

Oblomov19 · 21/12/2019 11:53

I can eat like a horse. And I'm very small so people are shocked how much I can put away.

But no, I'd probably just have a packet of crisps at say 7-8pm?

confusedconception · 21/12/2019 11:57

I’m always hungry I can’t go more than a couple of hours without actually feeling hungry and my stomach making noises. I have a really fast metabolism though and can even get shaky if leave too long between meals
I struggle with keeping weight on too I woukd 100% eat that and need dinner later on !

Gwenhwyfar · 21/12/2019 12:04

It's just a comment. It's not fixating! Why does it bother you so much that some people say it?

UnicornAndSparkles · 21/12/2019 13:05

Doesnt it depend what you eat? A 3 course meal could mean a 3-scallop starter, a green salad and a fruit salad. If I'd had that I'd probably be wanting to eat later that day! If, on the other hand, I'd had doughballs, a pizza and a chocolate fudge cake I might not fancy dinner later on.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/12/2019 13:47

Of course it depends what the food is. I think that in a normal restaurant a 3 course meal would be far too much food to be able to have another meal later, but if you go for fine dining the portions tend to be much smaller.

viccat · 21/12/2019 13:52

I tend to only have one "main" meal a day - not because I'm particularly healthy at all, I just live alone and can't be bothered to cook twice. If I eat out at lunch time, I would probably have something small later on, but not another meal as such.

ReeRi · 21/12/2019 14:18

I would eat again for dinner

WeirdCatLady · 21/12/2019 14:25

I think it depends. There are some who prefer to present themselves as tiny little mice with minuscule appetites ‘aren’t I dainty’ 🙄 IMHO they tend to be total liars Wink

There are some for whom this might actually be true. My mil was like this. She could have half a sandwich for lunch and then wouldn’t eat again for 24 hours.

Me? Well I’m on my Christmas break so I barely stop eating all day right now Xmas Grin

My family of 3 adults are the sort to take a ‘feeds 15’ meat joint as a challenge to be proudly conquered. (Before the pearl clutchers get going we are all a nice normal weight!)

c3pu · 21/12/2019 14:31

When I was younger my appetite was a thing to behold, I could eat a 3 course lunch then have it again at dinner time.

Now I've hit the ripe old age of 36 if I had 3 course lunch I'd probably want to go home and sleep it off, and probably wouldn't feel the need to eat anything else until breakfast the next day.

marcopront · 21/12/2019 15:51

This reminds me of a conversation with an ex.

Me : What do you want for dinner
Him: I'm not hungry, I don't want anything to eat
Me: I'll just cook for me then
Him: Why wouldn't you cook for your boyfriend?

I did cook and he ate half of it.
He had issues with food and I think felt admitting he was hungry was a problem.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 29/12/2019 12:26

😂 Did you mean 36 or 96?!?

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 29/12/2019 12:54

I thought of this thread after a 1 course Christmas dinner when the Dragon family were unable to eat anything other than 2 tubes of Pringles between the 4 of them for their evening meal 😂😂

We are SO not competitive under eaters either! I now have a freezer full of "snacky buffet" type food to eat my way through.

squeekums · 29/12/2019 12:57

3 course lunch?
id not eat dinner, id still be full
maybe a slice of toast before bed at like 1am

user1493494961 · 29/12/2019 12:59

After a 3 course lunch, I would eat a yoghurt or banana before bed, nothing more as I would still be too full.

beautifulstranger101 · 29/12/2019 12:59

meh- I dont think everyone who couldn't manage an evening meal/snack after a 3 course dinner is automatically "lying". That seems really silly to me.
I probably wouldn't eat after that but I dont get some kind of thrill or pleasure out of saying that- I just hate the feeling that ive eaten too much- it gives me heartburn and makes me feel lethargic and gross.

Scbchl · 29/12/2019 13:00

If I had a three course meal for lunch I likely wouldnt have anything else to eat meals wise. I may have a piece of fruit or yogurt if hungry later. Obviously if I suddenly was quite hungry (which I know I wouldnt be if I'd had a 3 course meal) I'd maybe have a cup a soup/samdwhich or toastie.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 29/12/2019 13:03

When I was younger I would have eaten again. i still have a huge appetite sadly but I've found my digestion has slowed right down (50 very soon). Its very annoying because I do tuck into and enjoy enormous meals but stay full for a very long time. I'd still be feeling the effects the next morning. You'd think I may be losing weight but no. What I need to do is reduce portion size hugely so I'm not so full and eat more regularly and balanced - easier said than done.

MotherofPearl · 29/12/2019 20:44

I have to eat three meals a day. I am not a snacker but missing a meal is inconceivable to me. Blush

After a large lunch like that I would probably have a smaller, lighter dinner - but I'd still always eat something.
