‘That’s me done for food today’ after a 3 course lunch

Offred2 · 19/12/2019 16:23

I went to a restaurant with four friends for a Christmas lunch a few days ago. We all ate 3 courses and had a glass of wine each (none of us are big drinkers). The portions were decent-sized but not ridiculously big.

As we were finishing one of my friends said something along the lines of ‘that was lovely, I wont be needing anything else to eat today’. Following this all my other friends nodded/agreed.

While I didn’t say anything I was thinking that this is not the case for me at all! After that lunch at 1pm I ate beans on toast at around 7pm. I think of myself as someone with a pretty normal appetite, but if my friends were being truthful I ate a substantial amount more than them that day.

I remember a few years back my MiL making a similar comment after a restaurant lunch, that she wouldn’t need to eat anything else that day. However as we happened to be staying with her at the time I know she later ate sandwich and soup at dinner time.

So - my friend’s comment got me thinking. What do people actually mean when they use this phrase? Is it literal, as in ‘after this big lunch I will not eat any food until tomorrow’? Or do people simply mean that they won’t need to have a big evening meal, but might have eg a sandwich? Or is it something some people (women!) say without meaning it, to indicate they have a small/delicate appetite, though they may have every intention of eating something else that day.

For what it’s worth all of my friends in the restaurant are healthy weights, and as far as I know no one has any history of disordered eating.

If I have a big meal, I'll say 'that's me for the week!' I don't mean it literally lol.

itssquidstella · 20/12/2019 16:52

Actually I'm skiing this week so have been eating breakfast, but I've noticed I'm eating less at lunchtime so I suppose it balances out. I'm definitely not a competitive undereater - if I go out for dinner with friends then I'm usually the one polishing off everyone else's leftovers!

Thestrangestthing · 20/12/2019 16:53

I would probably have a bit of toast later. I can never eat 3 courses though, especially if I'm drinking alcohol. We went on a work night a couple of weeks ago and everyone else had their 3 courses, I just had a main. I hate the feeling of being stuffed and the drink makes me feel sick.

WorraLiberty · 20/12/2019 17:57

I think it’s just a throwaway comment to say they’re full, I doubt they don’t eat anything else for the rest of the day.

Why though?

Why do you doubt it when everyone as individuals, have individual appetites?

Surely there's nothing to doubt?

damnthatanxiety · 20/12/2019 18:22

I can't eat a 3 course meal full stop but if I ate a huge amount during the day, I wouldn't want another big meal. One big meal a day and maybe a cup of tea and a snack later or nothing at all. Depends on how I felt.

It's like the mystical mumsnet chicken that feeds a family of four for a week

No it isn't Confused

IvinghoeBeacon · 20/12/2019 19:05

We clearly all have different ideas of what “not needing anything else for the day” means. I understood it to literally mean eat nothing else, not even a biscuit, whereas some interpret it as no more proper meals, which might still include a few mouthfuls of food. Tbh though I don’t really discuss my eating habits in this great detail in RL, nor take much notice of other people’s

In what way?

DressedAs · 20/12/2019 19:34

Some people do say this and I don't get it. I can't "stock up" a days worth of food in one meal. DH always says he won't be able to eat after a big lunch but he always does! He usually ends up ordering a takeaway late after realising he can't go from lunchtime until the next morning not eating.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 20/12/2019 19:37

Same for me DressedAs. If I eat a big meal at lunch then it will be well digested by dinner time! I might not have a whole other 3 course dinner in the evening Grin but I’d definitely need to eat something.

When I was a kid we used to have a big roast on Sunday afternoons followed by Scotch pancakes in the evening as a small ‘supper’. I bloody loved it:

Nonnymum · 20/12/2019 19:39

My mother in law also used to say that. It was never true though. She always had something else. I think she only said it because she felt guilty having a big lunch. She had a strange relationship with food and weight that she's passe on to my DP and her DD.
It's a long time to go without eating if you have lunch at 1 then nothing until the next morning.

SunshineAngel · 20/12/2019 19:51

If I had a three course meal at lunchtime, I would probably not be hungry until later, but would end up having either a sandwich, or a brew and some biscuits in the evening - maybe 8pm ish. Definitely not another meal though.

Offred2 · 20/12/2019 19:59

But isn’t a sandwich a meal? I would class it as one.

And looking at it purely in calorie terms some shop bought sandwiches they can be 600-700 calories so probably no fewer calories than some of the hot / cooked foods that you would describe as a meal.

I've eaten porridge with yoghurt and banana, approx 4 chocolate chip cookies, small portion oven chips with one egg half slice ham several satsumas ditto apples large portion humous two packets Seabrook crisps two sliced buttered wholemeal bread, 2 glasses wine.

Skinnychip · 20/12/2019 20:12

Why are MN bothered about what other people eat? I used to have an eating disorder and I was unhealthily interested in what every Tom dick and harry had eaten (or not eaten). Now I'm recovered the only person I'm concerned about what they eat is myself, my DC and making sure the cats have some food. I dont get the "what have you eaten today?" Posts. They must be full of people with ED because I cant understand why anyone else would give a shit about what 200 internet strangers have eaten.....

MaryPopppins · 20/12/2019 20:26

I'm a big eater.

But we went out for 3 course lunch with worn yesterday. And I ate all 3 large courses.

Didn't eat again (except some miniature heroes with a tea in the evening - it's Christmas after all) until lunch time today.

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 20/12/2019 20:33

My lovely MIL says this a lot. It's not true! But we humour her. It's one of her quirks. She makes up the calories in grazing and a swift snaffled sandwich or two.

LemonPrism · 20/12/2019 21:33

Some people just say that to make themselves feel like you don't think they're a fatty. Others genuinely just eat less.

If someone said that to me I'd probably say me too but it would so not be true

ragged · 20/12/2019 21:51

I wouldn't say it but then I'd find myself pushing food around the plate at tea time having to offend DH (the cook) by being unable to eat more than a few bites.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/12/2019 22:00

So why did you write that people call you under eaters and give your small portion of chips between four of an example of this? 🤣

Because many if our friends actually would treat that portion of chips as a single portion, the same as they would have a large pizza EACH when we can’t manage all of two between us.

LemonPrism · 20/12/2019 22:04

@HollowTalk I like to cook, and if I'm going to eat the 400 calories in a bowl of cereal then I'd rather get it from a meal

fallfallfall · 20/12/2019 22:05

i certainly don't "willingly" fast for 21 hours. so no matter how massive a lunch, eaten, i would be having something between the lunch and 0900 breakfast.
and yes any food from light soup and crackers to sandwich to stew would be considered "food".

LemonPrism · 20/12/2019 22:09

@adaline she literally said in the Op not to respond with your 'oh gosh I could NEVER eat so much food' responses.

Pretending to be embarrassed when it's actually a bitchy mean girl backhanded insult. Grow up.

DownstairsMixUp · 20/12/2019 23:02

I'd still eat but I'd probably have a a sandwich or something for dinner so just swapping the order of meals. I definitely couldn't go till the next day without anything

Creepster · 20/12/2019 23:15

It isn't a proper meal unless all the food groups are represented.
Anything less is snackies.
